How can I watch / check the status of the master file Table in XP?

Theoretically, I have 55 G of disk space on a ThinkPad R60. I have confirmed that there is less than 24 G in the files, but Windows tells me there is only 4.5 G of free space. Who went from 250 M I had before taking the steps described below.

CHKDSK finds no bad sectors.
When I run chkdsk, it says it has repaired an attribute bitmap MFT error.
In the next row chkdsk says that it has detected an "open space marked" (what it is) as he tried to complete the allocation of bitmat volume, then goes on to say that he found a problem of file system and I need to run chkdsk /f.
Have made several times (in addition to the removal of files and programs, disk clean up, defrag and delete the old sys running restore points), but to no avail.
Although I doubt that the MFT itself will devour that much space, chkdsk results leads me to believe that the problem could be associated MFT.
Question: Is - everyone out there knows how to get a look at or test the validity of the MFT?

This problem has been resolved, but I just wanted to make the new assignment to inform everyone.
Have a ThinkPad R60 with a score of 52 gig. There was less than 24G in stored files, but I was getting Windows low disk space warnings.
Tried everything but could not find most of the missing space.
Fallen on the ad below and solved the problem just like that.
