If scenario 1 applies to you and C:\Windows.old <=this> is no longer available, you're the GROUND.

=========================

If (and only if) you still have the disks that came with your Windows XP-based computer when you bought it...

Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows XP.

HOW to do a clean install of Windows XP: see method 1 and http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307

After the new installation, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of EVERYTHING on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or one local network (i.e. other computers) AND BEFORE to plug in a flash, SD card, or any other external drive to the computer otherwise:

  • Windows.Old folder

-is it possible to remove the "Windows.old" folder since that he has already created a new folder "Windows"? What could be affected? It takes almost 20G of space.

-can I also remove "Program" and "Program (x 86)" folder? It is basically duplicated after installing Win 7. When I tried, it says "You are not allowed..." »

Really need advice of experts here. Thank you.

Do NOT delete the "program" and "Program (x 86)" folder. Both are necessary.

    Windows.old on your C: drive

Usually, but not always, after installation of Windows 7 you have a Windows.old folder on your C: drive that contains your files and data from the previous installation of Windows and allows you to go back to a previous version of Windows. Open Windows Explorer and under 'Computer' click the C: drive - if the Windows.old folder is on your hard drive, it will contain all of your files to the Windows system, and it can be removed if you do not need to free up space on your hard drive.

If she's not here, make sure you can see the Windows.old folder:
    1. click on start, type: hidden
    2. click on 'display the hidden files and folders '.
    3. Click to select "show the hidden files and folders".
4 uncheck the following three points:
    Hide empty drives
Hide extensions of known file types
    Hide protected operating system files
    5. click OK and look for the folder
(Note: after you are done go back and double check "Hide protected operating system files.") If you want to change the other return parameters are.)

If the Windows.old folder does not remove:
In Windows Explorer, you should see a folder called Windows.old on your C: drive. That contains all of your files from your previous installation. If you need all the files, you can copy them to another folder and then delete Windows.old. If you do not need anything in the folder, it is safe to delete.

  • I had to install a fresh install of Win7 on a Win7 computer. Old settings are in the Windows.old folder. How can I migrate the old settings for new install?

I tried to 'upgrade' a Win7 installation using a valid Win7 upgrade CD. Because the current version is newer than the CD, it would not be upgraded. I created an installation on the old HDD. All my old programs are still on the HARD drive. I have the Windows.old folder on the HARD disk. I backed up the My Documents folder with all my data. It is now restored. I need to get the old registry settings in the registry again so I did not reinstall all my programs. How can I do this?

Unfortunately, you will need to reinstall all your programs from their original installation discs.

What you should have done was to download a current copy of the edition of Windows 7, you have a license for Service Pack 1 integrated and do an upgrade of the repair.

Unfortunately, it's too late now, since you seem to have done a custom installation.

  • How can I recover Favorites and passwords after a change of operating system and older programs are listed in a windows.old folder?

Recently, I had a fatal crash of my Windows XP Pro system. I clean installed Vista (would not allow an upgrade installation), and it offers all my settings and programs in a windows.old folder. I wish I could recover my passwords stored (even if I have to go manually) and my favorites for Firefox. I was running version 4 at the time of the accident of the o/s. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Just as I expected. Before you follow my instructions, you may need to change your folder options to show hidden files. Now go to:

C:/Windows.old/documents and Settings / < user on XP name > / Application Data

And copy the text to the Mozilla folder for

    C:/Users / < username on Vista > / AppData/Roaming/Mozilla

If the Mozilla folder does not exist, create it.

Now in C:/windows.old/Documents and Settings / < user name on XP > / Local Settings/Application Data

And copy the text within the Mozilla folder in

    C:/Users / < username on Vista > / AppData/Local/Mozilla

Yet once, if the Mozilla folder does not exist, create it and rename it to Mozilla.

    I hope this helps!

  • Restore windows 7 using the windows.old folder after the installation of windows 8?

    Hi all

After you have installed windows 8 on a pc comes with windows 7, I learned just learned that I don't have a product key valid win8 because I already used once for an installation of win8 on another pc. Now, I need to go back to win7 because I don't plan on buying another product key.
I know that I can do this with the option to restore from the manufacturer, but it will be a hassle to get back to the top/reinstall all my applications and data.
Is it possible to go on win7 by using the windows.old folder?

    Hello

Whether you are planning to install Windows 7 on the computer that has Windows 8, we can only perform a custom installation.

If you are using an OEM computer, see the link:

    Understanding downgrade rights

If you do not use an OEM computer, you may need to try the following steps to perform a custom installation when you have lost the applications and settings, however the data stored on the C drive will be saved to the Windows.old folder.

For the steps to detalied on how to spend to try solutions by André from the link:

Can I downgrade to Windows 7?

Note: Make sure that you back up important data before performing a custom installation.

  • Is it safe to restore the Windows.old folder?

    BACKGROUND:

I have a Dell Studio 540 in Windows Vista Ultimate which suddenly crashed, then wouldn't restart, saying: "no available boot device." Apparently, the hard drive boot sector had been corrupted. After of the painstaking efforts to save as many as possible training and have unsuccessfully using CHKDSK or Seagate tools to repair the drive, I finally resorted to a clean reinstall using the Dell OEM Windows Vista reinstallation disc. I chose the option to move all old files/folders in a folder Windows.old and I am now able to start Windows. However, all settings prerequisites, programs, files and folders from the previous installation are still in the Windows.old folder. For now, I run a full CHKDSK again (and he says 'Corrupt file attribute Deleting the file record segment X X' so I hope that some repairs happens)...
But what I would do, if possible and if it will not cause problems, use the instructions in this MS support article "how to restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you install Windows Vista." But before I do that, my question is the following:
    QUESTION:
If I had to do a reinstall of Vista due to damage/corruption of the hard drive, and if all what information has been moved to the folder Windows.old during this process, is it possible that restore the folder Windows.old to the previous installation would restore any damage/corruption existed, thus causing the problem to return or make things worse? Or should I not worry about the restoration of the old "problem"?

    Hello

You can use the restore feature if the previous installation was good.

It is not in your case; If this isn't an option for you.

You can use the windows.old folder to retrieve your data.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/932912

But the programs must be reinstalled form the original media.

And when you're done with the windows.olf folder you can delete.

"How to use the disk cleanup feature to delete the Windows.old folder after you install Windows Vista"

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/930527

And it is perhaps an idea to run Dell Diagnostics and eventually replace your drive hard if it comes up with errors.

    http://support.Dell.com/support/eDOCS/systems/WS340/en/UG/DIAGS.htm

    See you soon.

  • files and folders in the windows.old folder missing

Recently, I updated my windows 8. (a day and a half)

Today I was moving the content in the folder windows.old to the other locations, (4 ~ 5 h ago)

Suddenly, after the computer has restarted, the content in the windows.old folder disappeared except for users and windows folders.

I copy the files from windows.old/Program files and I don't know that I do not delete the folder by myself.

I read previous posting on similar problems, but that's because they kept their too long files or their disk space was not enough.

But I have enough space in my C drive and just refreshed 1 ~ 2 days ago.

I did not drive or any cleaning that is.

It is unreasonable to a system to remove the backup files after a few days without noticing.

Please let me know how to solve this problem and to recover these files.

There are a lot of files in the previous program files, I need to recover the precious.

    Hi Junwhan,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I can understand the importance of data could be in the Windows.old folder and we regret the inconvenience.

Yes, Windows 8 has a new timer feature which will automatically delete Windows.old files after a period of 4 weeks since the upgrade. The idea is to avoid the waste of space giving you plenty of time to get what you need out of the folder and delete those that sit for months or even years.

Since it's just been 1-2 days of update process, you can activate the "hidden objects" to see if the Windows.old files appear.

As you open the file Explorer, click view and check the hidden items

In addition, if you use third-party antivirus program control the log of activities see if there is any action taken at the time where the files have disappeared.  Most of the antivirus program automatically deletes the default files. You can change these settings, however, it is not recommended.

If you use the default, Windows Defender (WD) on Windows 8.1 then WD has real-time analysis allow by default. Refer to this link: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/wiki/protect_defender-protect_start/windows-defender-on-windows-8-introduction-and/f1e00106-6687-4efe-9ec0-ed9f72fabb92

Check the history of Windows Defender:

    1. Type of user interface modern Windows defender.

    2. Click Windows Defender.

    3. Click the history tab, and then click Details.

    4. Check Date and time if you find any virus.

Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

Hope this information is useful. Please feel free to answer in the case where you are facing in the future other problems with Windows.
