  I fear for all purposes, you can't do that - it always makes things worse.

  The problem is that you have no idea of the time constants of compression or amounts used, and without this information, everything you do will bring another change to the dynamics, but won't cancel everything that happened before, because it will be the exact opposite.   Before putting pictures on the timeline, use "Automate to sequence" with the cross dissolve as the default transition. Cross dissolve is not an effect, but a transition.

  I tried on my machine and everything works fine. Try to switch the GPU acceleration to the software under file > project settings > General. Remove the existing previews and check if the problem persists.

  Short answer, there is no simple "export to iPhone", but if you just want to have a movie that you can watch on your iPhone, you just send an attachment by e-mail (other than the .avi) and save it to your phone.
