  This problem has been resolved.

  This problem has been resolved by higher HP product support.  Other levels of support were not able to diagnose the problem or fix.

  The problem has been resolved by:

  When that client security is changed the drives become available.  It is not information about this when using the computer and this can be learned by trial and error.

  How to backup your data in Vista is to go to where your data is stored (documents, music, etc.) > right click on what you want to record > place your mouse cursor on send to > have a Memory Stick or USB hard drive connected > Send your data to that.

  Go to Windows 8/8.1 > open the Explorer file in the bar of > have plugged USB > copy the respective folders data files there.

  It's the old way to transfer data between different operating systems, or to make a backup in your case

I'm sorry if it's a very basic question, but I'm not a computer scientist and the help delivered with the printer documentation does not appear to this lay person to give this information on how to set up a home network with this printer.
