Folder options | View and uncheck Hide extensions of known file types and also to verify the possibility to see the hidden files and folders.  Then in Winmail opener you can go to tools | Options | Maintenance | Advanced | Store the folder to view the location of the message store.  You can then navigate to that folder in Windows Explorer and slot that you will find a subdirectory "Local Folders" and by whom are all of your boxes to the letters and messages stored as eml files.  You can copy this store of the entirety of the message, and then on an external drive to back it up.  I believe you can also use file | Export | Messages in Winmail to save outside.
