How to make an ESXi backup on USB?

I have a few servers ESXi 4.1 on USB keys. Now I wonder how can I save the config ESXi and USB itself, in which case the USB will be dead or damaged? One of the USB key on a single server is already showing the signs to go to rest forever, and I would like to have a backup of it. Is there a tool I can use to create a backup on another USB key?

Thanks, I was looking for some kind of script. And the backup process itself is ok, but the restore configuration procedure needs to be alive and running of the ESXi host. So in case of emergency (USB key works do not), what would be the correct procedure to restore the server without hollow is a complete reinstallation of ESXi and reload the config with vicfg-cfgbackup?

Well, everything depends on how many ESXi servers you have.

If you have small env is not worth to spend a lot of time for preparation of extra super recovery too. I don't know anyone who supports up that ESX or ESXi breaks.

For small env:

1. PowerCLI script -you can create the script CLI power for each of your guests with specific parameters

http://communities.VMware.com/community/VMTN/Server/vSphere/automationtools/PowerCLI

Catering requirements:

ESXi server must be running in - running

restore procedure

manual installation of ESXi (15 minutes), after installation, run a script (2 minutes) against the new server and DONE

2. with the help of vMA

Create a bash script that would back up ESXi firmware, set it on a weekly basis in crone (on the server of the vMA)

Restore requirements

ESXi server must be running

ESXi must be on that same level as if it were before the construction accident

restore procedure

manual installation of ESXi (15 minutes), after installation restore a Firmware using the new server and DONE

  • How to make a manual backup, so I have redunant copying my files

To ignore the story set in the last paragraph
I have thousands of pictures on my laptop. I also have another, my desktop computer, a significant amount of disk space that I use for my backup
I prefer manual backups as I want to use the content on both computers. I change my daily photo library, remove some photos that I need more, add new ones, so at the end of everything I have thousands of pictures on my laptop, most which are saved on the desktop, there are also a few new on my laptop that I would like to copy on my desk, AND there are a few elders on the desktop are no longer on the laptop (that I would like to delete)
To say the easy things, all I want to do is make an exact copy of the photos on my laptop to my desktop folder.
The only way I found to do this was to copy the whole folder to the desktop and then remove the old version of him
If I just copied the new version of the folder just above that older new photos get copied but older are deleted
Redundant comments: how to make an exact copy of a file in, say, another partition that has an older version of this same folder, which means that there is some files (in the older version folder) is no longer, I need and would like to get their removal, and other files that are already present in the two cases, I want to NOT crash. I can't do it manually because there are thousands of files and hundreds of files! Can anyone help?

In addition to the tool to try it, I forgot to mention that Windows Live Sync app keeps files in constant sync, so if a file is changed, it will distribute the latest version of all locations synchronized.  But if a file does not change, it will not re-synchronized.

However, there is another tool that is a bit more customizable and can be run on command (there's even a command line command so you can put it in a batch file or scheduled task).  It's Microsoft SyncToy.  Here are some resources that might interest you:

    Hi all

I hope someone can advise me.

I purposely bought a number of 8 sticks Go Lenovo USB in order to make them bootable so that I can load quickly on new devices operaing systems. But what I can? No question.

The best way to make a usb bootable with Windows XP is to use Almeza Multiset 8.3.0 It is totally automated. It will use either a Windows Xp folder that you created on your disk or an iso image of Windows Xp. You can use the trial version that the software is not free.

On another note, I can't even begin to wonder why you are using Windows Xp (especially reception) on this system.

    2. how to the backup of the key with ESXi installed on it. I know that the host continues to operate, but I would like to know how to make a reliable backup.

    Thank you.

You want a quality certified USB 2.0 key.  A particular brand is not a requirement.

For the backup of your ESXi host (the config only) you can use vicfg-cfgbackup of the vCLI or Get-VMHostFirmware of PowerCLI.

    vCLI - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/esx_3i_rcli/vicfg-cfgbackup.php

    PowerCLI - http://blogs.vmware.com/vipowershell/2010/12/better-firmware-management-in-powercli-411.html

In the case of having to recover you launch the ESXi installation CD, set an IP address for management, patch your webhost to match the version running in the latest backup and then restore your backup file.

  • How to make a backup recovery disk (usb) for my new XPS8700?

    Hello

Please bear with me as I'm pretty much computer illiterate.

I just bought a Dell XPS8700 with Win8.1 for my partner for Christmas.  It came with 2 TB HD cache & 32 GB of SSD.  Round 6 months. from now on I intend to buy a 120 GB SSD for upgrading its system & will use for the operating system.   I do not know how to do this (I have an idea... looked. vids online, etc.), but what I need to know is > how to make a backup for its new computer recovery disk (so that I can put it aside for when I get the new SSD).  I don't even know if that's actually what you still call it (recovert disc?) or if it is called "backup of factory drive?

Basically, I want to put Win8.1 on a USB key so I can use this more later to reinstall it on an SSD.

I bought a Lexar 32 GB USB (3.0) to use for this.

Can someone "please" give me a step by step on how to go about doing this?

    Thank you!

  • How to make a CD available USB drive VMS as a USB under ESXi 5.5

    Hi people:

I discovered a possible problem with ESXi 5.5 which I hope someone knows a way to get around.  I plugged a USB CD/DVD drive in an ESXi host 5.5 current enforcement in the expectation that I would be able to assign to a virtual machine as a USB device.  However, it has not shown as a USB device is available.  Also, it did not show as a host device that I could assign to a virtual CD/DVD device.  I rebooted the host and then the CD/DVD USB drive present themselves as a host device that I could assign to a virtual CD/DVD device.  Of course, the problem is that I don't want to have to restart the host whenever I want to connect a physical to a virtual machine CD/DVD player, and I don't want to let the reader of CD/DVD USB connected to the host all the time I use it for other things as well (the host has not its own CD/DVD drive).

So I guess my question is:

    (1) is there a way to say ESXi a newly connected CD/DVD USB drive is intended to be a USB device that can be connected to the virtual machines, or

    (2) is there a way to force rescan USB devices for USB CD/DVD players to demand and available as a host device to be assigned to a virtual CD/DVD device without a restart ESXi?

I hope that there is some configuration settings, I do not know on which control this behavior.

    Suggestions welcome.

Ok.  I found the answer.  Guess I didn't have a good enough search until I posted.

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1027415

Basically, you need to restart the daemon spend after you have added the device USB CD/DVD:

    restart the /etc/init.d/hostd

from the console service.  Which causes ESXi to rescan USB devices and CD/DVD USB drive is available to be mapped as a host device on a virtual CD drive of the virtual machine.  It is not as good as to be able to use it immediately, but at least it does not require the host be restarted each time.

I'll use this external hard drive to copy files to other computers and I would like to know how to make the drive read-only.

I don't know what HARD drive you have exactly, but I know that Toshiba offers a software protection with external hard drives.
Did you check manuals? Is something like that provided with your HARD drive?

Maybe you need to use some third party software part for the protection of files on the HARD drive. Google all over the place.

    Hello

I think that it s a good idea to make a backup on your laptop.

You have created the Toshiba recovery disks? When you bought a Toshiba laptop, you must create these disks. If you have a virus or something else with these discs, you can get the factory settings on your laptop.

You can create discs with the Toshiba recovery disc creator and if you didn t again, you get the following message:

    > Important INFORMATION
    >
    > your system is equipped with a hard drive recovery system. If you need to repair
    > your computer in the restaurant to original factory State, you can do it directly
    > drive hard (press F8 when you start your computer, choose "Repair your computer"

    > Toshiba recommends you create recovery disk medium uses the "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator' to ensure the
    > Hat you are able to restore your computer to the State of origin, installed at the factory, even if your computer
    > is seriously damaged

So create one and if you need, you can get factory settings with Windows, drivers and tools in minutes.

If you want to make a backup of your laptop with all the software that was installed by you, you must use programs such as Acronis True Image backup.
