Remove Linux from a Windows computer

  • 1

Back up data from your Linux partition (all data you want to keep). As a precaution, back up your Windows partition and operating system (if possible) well as the Windows partition should not be affected.

  • 2

Restart your computer with the Windows startup disk in the appropriate drive. Type the command "fixmbr" when prompted. This procedure will allow you to only see the windows in the start menu.

  • 3

    Starting in Windows.

  • 4

Click on "Start", "Control Panel,", "Administrative Tools", "Computer management", "Storage" and "disk management".

  • 5

Select your hard drive. Select the Linux partition. Delete the Linux partition.

  • 6

  • How to remove XP pro to accidental dual boot with XP Home

I had to reformat my wife's computer.  It is a store brand AMD athlon 2500 with 2 GB of ram.  It came with a copy of XP Home recovery disk.  I wanted to create a second logical drive on the computer to store the data, but the recovery disc can not do this.

I used a copy of XP Pro I have to format the hard drive in 2 logical drives here but he installed XP Pro as well.  It is not allowed for this machine.  I thought I would install XP Home Edition from the recovery disk and it would be more to write XP Pro, but it didn't.

Now I have a dual boot with XP Pro and XP Home, I want to keep I want to delete.  It appears after the MESSAGE that there is an option for home or similar to a GRUB menu Pro.

I note in 'My Computer' C: WINDOWS and watch WINDOWS.0 I guess que.0 is the installation of Pro as it happened first.

Any suggestions on how to remove the installation of Pro and leaving the House intact?

    Thanks in advance, Al

If you have not used the computer since installing Home and Pro, the best thing to do is to reinstall the House.

Partition Wizard Home Edition "CD Boot" allows you to reformat the partition and reinstall XP Home:

Note: There is also a CD bootable version

  • How can I create new partition for dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu)?

My Z580 came with 4 primary partitions: the Windows boot partition; Windows OS & data (C drive); a "Lenovo" partition which seems to have the drivers and software pre-installed (drive D). and an OEM partition that is used for key recovery.

I want to create a dual boot system, as if I had on my old laptop, so I guess I need to delete one of the existing partitions and create an extended partition. The best candidate seems to be the 'Lenovo' partition with the drivers and applications. Can I backup the data on this partition and transfer it to the C drive... or put it on a new logical partition?

Alternatively, it would be preferable to save the OEM DVD recovery partition, and then delete and create a new extended partition? I guess that means abandon OKR, but I'd still be able to recover Windows of DVDs (?).

I would appreciate anyone's help. I am far from being an expert or computer whizz, so if you can help, please keep it simple!

In fact, you can get if you only change the size of the D: drive. I guess that your D: drive occupies about 25 GB. You can delete this partition and shrink the C: drive as 100 GB (or any size you like) and you can create a new D: drive. This way you can use OneKey Recovery and install the second OS on a larger partition and yet once again, I suggest you create Factory Default disc before you do all this

  • No its w/WinXP Pro (Dual-boot system)

I have 4 computer Pentium Gateway w/WinXP Pro and motherboard that has never worked for her so I added a sound card and that worked. Then a friend added a dual-boot system (Ubuntu) and installed the drivers that showed me that the sound of the motherboard works with Ubuntu/Linux, but not for XP. Now I'm stuck change between MB & sound card. How to do his job on my MB with XP? Thank you.

You still have a problem the appliance in msinfo32?

What the Manager device, is it still show something in the other devices section?

Remove the card from its complement and distributed to msinfo32/Device Manager and see if the problem is still there.

When you reported it as an E-4100, was it of msinfo32 or from another source, such as a label on the case?

There is a "Download hardware detection' link on the page of the gateway I provided above, what happens if you try to update material from this link?

You can also try Windows Update as a last resort.

  • Windows XP does not start in a dual-boot system

I have a Windows XP and Linux Mint 10 Julia on separate partitions in a dual boot system. Windows has been installed first, followed by Linux. Initially, the two worked, then, for some reason any I had to reinstall Linux. Now I can't get into Windows.
I can't enter the recovery by using the Windows CD Mode if that helps.

booting from cd is not always the best way to start an operating system installed on disk 0, for example drive C.

Yes, the default value for fixboot will always be the first drive to the motherboard, regardless of how many additional hard disks are installed.  It is the way windows is designed to be.  but in all fairness, you can start windows via a USB key with recent technology created by hp.com

also, if the disk check found a few errors then it means that there are corrupt or missing files.

so, at the command prompt go ahead and Run fixmbr, fixboot, bootcfg /rebuild and a chkdsk/r

You can also type help at the command prompt to get the details of the above.

  • Update Windows XP SP3 on a Dual Boot System w/Vista

Hello, I have a partition of windows xp and windows vista in my laptop Acer. (Pre-installed Vista and XP as a secondary operating system).
    My questions are:

    > Is it OK to upgrade Windows XP SP2 to SP3 of Windows even, it is placed in a dual boot?
    > Don't install SP3 will be erase all content of Windows XP?
    > Is affected the partition of Windows Vista if I download Windows XP SP3 of XP SP2 Partition?
    > If I download the SP3 for Windows XP in the Microsoft.com site, it needs to be bootable and recorded in a CD or just run the installer from the hard disk automatically after installation?

    Thanks to all in advance!

You're off topic of the Forum, you have published, which is dedicated to the beta Version of Microsoft Security Esentials

However, I moved the yoru post.

You can update to SP3 on a system XPSP2 dual boot Vista residence. You can not install XP * after * Vista for a Dual Boot system unless you use a 3rd Boot Manager part.
Run the update to SP3 does not erase anything, it updates the XP system components.
There will be no impact to your Vista installation on your system to dual-boot PC.
SP3 is an update. It downloads an installation program analyzes your installation of XP and downloads the bits necessary to update to SP3 then install them after you have saved the files it will replace. You should be able to get SP3 easily by going to Windows Update in XP.

  • Help remove vista and options to dual boot with Windows 7

I think that I have selected the bits from the right here, but please let me know if not.  I recently installed windows 7 and I love it so much I want to remove vista.

I can't find any instructions on how to make sure (after formatting the drive with Vista on it - it's on a drive of 500 GB physically separated for Win 7) that I can remove the dual boot option, I currently have.  I also read if I do badly I can leave windows 7 unusable.

Win 7 is a full do not install an upgrade, just like vista.

Any help on the Microsoft site means how to repair xp, vista or windows 7, so to delete this post.

Any help or direction is appreciated, I have a few days to make what I just place my order for a 2 TB HDD, so won't try until it happens.

    Hello

"Just to check and then (which seems easier to me), if I transfer my data from the vista disc (assuming that it is the system disk) then delete and restart with the win7 dvd, a repair will then sign the Windows 7 disk as the system disk and remove any dual boot option?

Yes, it should work. As the Win7 disk does not currently startup files, made only with this disc a repair will create the most necessary.

"Out of curiosity if I format the Vista disc, and then restart your computer with the win7 dvd, this will give the same effect as having Remode the floppy disk in the first place?

No, except if you use Disk Manager to designate the Win7 drive than active first. If you simply format the Vista disk and then run a repair, startup files will be rewritten on the disk of Vista.
