  You can remove the need for a power on password as follows.

  Shut down the laptop.  Now on TAP the ESC key as soon as you press the power button to access the start menu, then select f10 to open the Bios menu.  Use the arrows to select the Security tab and press ENTER.  Use the arrow keys again to highlight the power on password and press ENTER.  Enter the current password and then the new password, simply leave this blank and press on enter - do the same for the confirmation field.  Press f10, select this option to save the new settings and press to enter.

  I have 2 laptops HP Pavilion... it runs very well, of a not so much. A person in the household must have messed up something, because on the Pavilion dv7 when I turn it on it says:

  POWER ON PAST on a screen that I do not usually see, it looks like a screen of type BIOS. If I hit ESC, it gives me a few options to do things, but it always ends up back to the POWER ON PASS. It's a blue rectangular box. Well, after 3 attempts (password attempts, I guess), it comes up with:

  A Google search did not come with something useful. Some say out the CMOS battery. I don't really want to open the laptop. Some say that move the CMOS jumper that is 'near the battery' to clear it up. I don't see a rider.

  Any ideas? Oh yes, it's Windows Vista Home Premium. I more information system everyone should their need.

  Your machine has an Insyde bios, which I expect to produce an 8-digit stop code.

  Others to contact HP, the only other suggestion I have would be to stop the laptop. Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery.  Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.  Plug the power adapter (leave the battery for now) and see if you now get to stop after knocking entered 3 times.
