  OK, I just solved my problem through the Intuit community forum.  Select paper handling / special and you will have the option of color printing.

  It is bad enough that assist HP tech couldn't solve this problem when I called - in fact, I think that the technology was just scroll HP online support.

  Of course, their Help Forum Web site will post my solution to my problem posted like a big green check mark "SOLVED!"

  Yes, if you set the printer "Print in grayscale" property, the printer prints using a black ink only.
  Some applications (new office, web browser, etc.) has its own print settings and I'm guessing that you have checked the 'Black and White' instead of 'Color', these applications so-called u-turn and set the properties of the printer to help, but something went wrong. If so, click on "Print using System dialog" and check the "print in grayscale". The printer will print in black.

  I understand that you have problems with printing in black only from your printer Laserjet M177fw range when you use Bistrack. The printer works properly black from other programs, the problem is with Bistrack. I suggest you contact their support solve your problem.

  Either way, I'll mention that the printer still uses a little color when printing in black as a base to give your impressions the sharp looking you would expect from a Laserjet. If the printer gives you a warning that you are very low on a color toner, replace it. This time will keep your bright impressions and will prevent the printer to get damaged.

  I'm happy that has managed to solve the problem for you, most of the time. Individual programs sometimes do not hold settings, if it is not set in the driver itself. If you have time, you can certainly try to check the updates of Chrome or uninstall/reinstall Chrome as well.

  The problem is your cartridge which is only printing yellow and magenta (red =).  Cyan is not printing.  You could check the cartrdige as an issue by gently dabbing it on a damp cloth.  This will cause a strong dark magenta and yellow blot, with maybe just a spot or not cyan at all.

  All printers do the same thing that even many printers have an option to print in black INK ONLY. The reason: during the process of global warming, printers need to use all inks to check and maintain their print heads... Some people say, we turn on the printer / OFF it will use more ink, I can't confirm that but understandable.

  The Photosmart b110a a ink cartrdiges individual and a separate print head.  To keep the print head don't dry out, you need to have all of the cartridges installed.

  Here it describes how the ink is used in inkjet printers.  In the terminology of this document the b110a is an IIC printer.

  Thank you for your help.  It was a faulty cartridge.  I pressed a white cloth on the ink source and only yellow and blue were visible, without red (magenta).  I've returned the fabric and cartridge in the store (with my receipt) and managed to get another canister... it worked!  Both cartridges have dates of expiry of 2016.  Glad I didn't have to spend time troubleshooting my printer.
