Hyper-V and iSCSI network

Hello

We evaluate a migration of vmware for hyperv.

I try to understand best practices for networks iSCSI comments.

I have physical 4ports 1GBit dedicated, on the host for iSCSI traffic.

I like to use all 4 for iSCSI host (vhdx volumes) traffic.

Now I thought to do 2 of them shared by creating 2 logical switches in VMM, adding 2 virtual network cards for the host to use.

The new virtual network cards are 10 Gbit. I don't see an option to change them to 1GBit. To me it seems now that the system prefers the 10 GB adapters. My other two physical cards are no more used.

I tried to do all 4 ports as virtual, but somehow the 4.7EPA ASM does not see virtual cards. He said only: "no network adapters don't find" at the opening of the MPIO settings.

Should I just ignore this idea to share and use 2 for host and 2 for iSCSI hosts, or is it a medium work?

It is recommended to devote at least 2 interfaces on the host iSCSI network.  In addition, you must install the Dell EqualLogic for Microsoft host integration tools and install the MPIO feature.  To enable the MPIO in the guest operating system, you must create at least two virtual switches that are related to the physical SAN on the Hyper-V host adatpers.  Virtual machines must be configured with at least two of these virtual switches.  Then, since the guest operating system, configure interfaces with IP iSCSI network, Subnet, etc...  You must also install the Dell EqualLogic for Microsoft host integration tools and functionality MPIO DSM in the guest operating system, if it is not running Windows.  If you use Jumbo frames, ensure that all NETWORK adapters used for iSCSI (NETWORK physical cards, NETWORK cards, Guest OS NICs) are enabled for frames.

In regards to ASM v4.7 EPA you don't see not cards network for MPIO - there is a known ASM / ME v4.7 bug in Windows Server R2 2012 linked to the EPA.  It is likely that the configuration of MPIO is fine (you can check it out through the initiator Microsoft iSCSI MPIO EqualLogic tab - it's just that ASM / me has a problem of information display.)  This bug has been fixed in version recommended to v4.7 GA HIT/Microsoft - which is intended to be published very soon.

  • How to segragate VM of each other AND Management & iSCSI network traffic?

I want to test how I can keep VM isolated from each other AND the segments of iSCSI network and management... It's just a proof of concept, so I not be using redundant paths.  I want to know how I can keep all my shelter of the attackers 'would '?  that is if one of the virtual machines becomes "compromise" How could I isolate all "would be attackers" to travel to other virtual machines or networks of management/iSCSI?   Is there a way to create each virtual machine in a VIRTUAL LAN on the ESX host? Or is there a better way?

Since I only need to the DMZ network available to VMS - must - I still 3 vSwitches?

Yes, one for virtual machines, one for management and one for iSCSI. You may combine up to vSwitches (2) combining management and iSCSI, but it is not recommended.

The host machine does the iSCSI storage to virtual machines as a "disk"?

More or less, Yes. When you create a virtual machine, you need to configure the disks for this virtual machine. You will be asked which data source to use, and you choose the iSCSI data store, that you create when you set up the data store and iSCSI.

The host uses the vSwitches? I thought that the host machine could use physical NETWORK cards... i.e. Teddy 1 would be management and Teddy 2 would be iSCSI, Teddy 3 would be linked to a vSWITCH for virtual machines?

Yes the host use the vSwitch, after all the console, etc. is a virtual machine its self

Virtual machines will never see a teddy bear. You want to assign a vNIC to the virtual machine when you create the virtual machine. The vNIC is connected to a group of ports, which in turn is connected to a vSwitch, which in turn is connected to a teddy bear.

The virtual machines do NOT need access to the networks of management or iSCSI (I don't think)?

    Fix.

The management network connects to ESX physical HOST (Teddy 1) in order to control the accurate virtual machines?

The management of the network give you access to control everything via vCenter or the VI client or the command line.

And the iSCSI network connects to the physical ESX HOST (Teddy 2) where the ESX host will present data warehouses to virtual machines as 'physical' disks correct?

Yes, it will look like just a physical disk to the VM operating system.

I guess what I'm trying to understand, or how I see it is that the host ESX is the only machine that has 'see' the iSCSI network?

The VMKernel manages iSCSI seamlessly. Guests don't need to know anything iSCSI.

Virtual machines see drives that presents the ESX host? For the virtual machines do not need is access to the iSCSI network (unless I need to install additional storage or drive shared etc...)

    Fix.

any idea when VI4 is scheduled to be released?

Rumor is soon. But unless there is there a feature that radically changes your design I wouldn't get too worried about it.

  • Adding the iSCSI network switch

    Hello

We have an iSCSI network for guests of vSphere 5.1 EQL boxes. The network is 192.168.0.0/24, we use the switches PC5548 and we have three groups EQL. Everything is configured following best practices from DELL, and everything is kind of okay job.

Since we are affected by the poor performance of our SQL servers virtualized and troubleshooting led switches as a guilty suspect I want to try to use other switches to know.

So I intend to add a pair of parallel to the PC5548 cisco switches and connect a host and a group of PS to those (where the SQL VM reside) and see the difference, but my question is that I can use the same network 192.168.0.0. / 24 although cisco and dell switches are not physically connected. VMotion work?

You shouldn't use the entry level switches with 10 tables. The interlink trunk has 80% of eql bandwidh. You can consider buying Dell Force10 switches with buffers of large size and low latency.

    Kind regards

  • 2 questions - group leader and iscsi

We have a unique PS6500 of the firmware 6.0.5. From 3 days ago, Archbishop Grp freezes when I click on the member icon. I could go into all the rest of the GUI with no problems. I got the firmware installed for about a month, so I don' t think that is the problem. Has anyone else seen elsewhere?

2nd edition - we have vmware hosts connected to QE through private switches. Vmware hosts have separate vswitches for vmotion and windows iscsi volumes. VMotion is on 10.2.0 subnet and iscsi volumes are on 10.2.1 subnet. The EQ is on 10.2.0 with a 255.255.0.0 mask. The switches are set with the VLANS separated for iscsi and vmotion.  So far in Grp Mgr, I allowed on each volume 10.2. *. *. I started to try to change it so that the vm volumes only allow connections from 10.2.0. * (vmotion subnet) and volumes windows only allow connection of the 10.2.1. *. Currently, I do not use chap or iscsi initiator to limit. Here is an example for a windows volume.

But here is what I get in the Connections tab for this volume, even after a new analysis of storage host adapters:

So either I completely ignore the setting of the limits of intellectual property, or my EQ has a problem. Shouldn't I have the 10.2.1 connections to this volume?

    Any ideas? Thank you.

None of the fixes listed in the 6.0.6 release notes apply to my EQ,.

BTW, you can add the ACL CHAP to the EQL live volume.  This will not affect existing sessions.  Just make sure that you first create the CHAP user on the table.  Then after setting the ACL volume, set the iSCSI initiator ESX to use CHAP.

If you take a look at the RPM, you can find a few Commons left default setings.  There are some that will improve performance, other stability.

vMotion has not EQL access at all.  It's strictly for compose the image memory of a computer virtual from one host to another ESX host.

Storage vMotion includes EQL, but it does not use the port of vMotion to do anything.

vMotion traffic must be completely isolated, because the content in the course of the transfer are not encrypted.   So no VM Network exchanges should be on this vSwitch and the physical switch should be isolated too.

  • Nested ESXi hosts and iSCSI POC

    People,

I want to set up a proof of concept for a two host, two models NAS for my workplace. At this point, I put a host of ESXi nested using this Vcritical guide - http://www.vcritical.com/2011/07/vmware-vsphere-can-virtualize-itself/

This made wonder. I have two virtual servers within the main install ESXi with the three hosts on the network 192.168.0.x. I then added a second NETWORK adapter on the 'server' and separated from the network iSCSI (192.168.1.x) and pointed to a simple NAS. This went well now. The problem is the hosts nested cannot access the iSCSI network.

It's all a bit above my paygrade, but I can't work on how I can get the hosts nested on the iSCSI network. I tried to add network cards second in virtual computers running virtual hosts and their allocation to the 192.168.1.x network.

Can anyone help to shed light? Someone you will understand my question or what I'm doing? I hope so!

    Thanks in advance

    HP

    Hello

Your primary host see the iscsi network and connect to your nas Server?

It should just be a case of creating a VM portgroup on this same vswitch, with settings of appropriate VLANs if necessary, assigning your esx hosts nested this portgroup vNIC. On the nested hosts themselves, you will need to implement the initiator software iscsi etc. as usual.

  • iSCSI networks

I think I have what should be a relatively easy question to answer, im just a little confused right now:

    I created vSwitch1

I created a group attached to port vmkernal vSwitch1

    I assigned an IP address

the default gateway has been the default installation of the gateway of the network management

I have configured VLAN 99 which is my VLAN ISCSI

When I configure my switch for VLAN 99 ports I can not ping to the IP address of the vmkernel port

If I change the swtich to the trunk w ports ports / VLAN 99 as well as the management VLAN then I can ping

What is well configured?  the default gateway must be changed to the default ISCSI VLAN gateway?

Thanks in advance for any idea!

    Cheers.

    Hello

If you configure the switch trunk ports and configuring the VMkernel the right port VLAN, you shouldn't have any problem to communicate through this VLAN.

If you configure the ports on the switch in the access mode, you must configure the VMkernel port without any VLAN in order to communicate through this VLAN.

ISCSI VLANS must be an isolated network, the gateway is not important when you configure the iSCSI network.

In any case, check out this link on the VLAN on VMware:

  • VCB 1.5 and iSCSI

I'm just starting with VCB and hopefully clarification.  The service console for my ESX hosts and my backup server (NetBackup 6.5.4) are located on a network of 10.56.64.x.  Each ESX host sees its LUN through a vSwitch/vmk has nothing but on it and all iSCSI iSCSI are on a dedicated network 10.56.40.x.  No traffic to other networks can hit the 10.56.40.x iSCSI network and vice versa.  Am I ok with this configuration - the VCB proxy would be resident on the NetBackup server and display the LUN through service consoles the ESX host?  Or VCB proxy should he direct iSCSI 10.56.40.x network access as well?

    Thank you

Your backup server is a physical machine correct?

If so, then to SAN based backup with VCB, you must add at least 1 network card on your backup server and presents the iSCSI to server storage.  Otherwise, you will eventually make NBD backups via the service console on your ESX host, and these are very slow.

The other option is to use a helper VM so you can use HotAdd mode for backups.

Ever option you choose, make sure you read carefully the VCB installation guide.  There are special steps that must be taken on your backup server before presenting the VMFS LUNS on your iSCSI SAN, or you could risk corrupting the VMFS LUNS.

    VCB docs are here http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_vcb_15_u1_admin_guide.pdf

  • ESX 3.5 and iSCSI LUNS

Good so I'm setting up my servers ESX using iSCSI LUNS.  I do not have the LUN in a VM, I want the servers to use.  Is it possible to do?  And how can I do for that implemented?

    Scott

You must enable initiator initiator or software hardware

If you go to the inititiator of the software, you must enable on each ESX host, by going to the configuration of the VI Client storage adapter tab. (you will see something like vmhba32, activate it)

Once it is enabled, you must add your target (as we are talking about software initiator, it supports only dinamic discovery).  Recommendation, isolate the network cards that will connect to the iSCSI network.

  • New to 8.1 and wanting to run Hyper V and 'try MS server 2012 ".

    Hello

Built a new PC and dropped in Enterprise 8.1... added Hyper v and downloaded the copy 'try' MS Server R2 2012.

I pulled the low R2 for Windows Server 2012 on the Technet Evaluation site and got the package: 130928-2229_server_serverdatacentreeval_en-us. VIRTUAL HARD DRIVE

I got going and he ran a few days (course worked very well, taking 70-410) then a few days later, I just clicked and deleted the instance of the virtual machine in the Hyper-V Manager because I wanted to change the config was not drives or anything else - error 1

Tried to re - install again and, of course, no joy, tried a few things and vain for 2 days, now this morning spent half a day, re-installation of 8.1 again to try to get the D/L will again... I see little thing Assistant account of that 8.1 restored my profile so maybe that's why the Hyper V ALWAYS failed to load the virtual hard disk.      Just a guess...  Error 2?

Back in the new Hyper-V install this morning in the reinstalled 8.1 and STILL get the error when I try again:

-Open the Manager Hyper of V

    -Machine virtual acts-Import

    -Dialog wizard - following

-Locate the folder - new folder on the hard disk

-Put in the path = C:\ HyperV files (there is a copy of 130928-2229. *.) Disk virtual hard in the folder)

    -Then click on select file-

    S ' poster in the path = C:\ HyperV can - next

    -Get the Assistant barf:

Hyper-V not found of VMS to import from location "C:\HyperV Files\".

The file "C:\ HyperV Virtual Machines\' is not found.  You might not have permission to access.

So, it is always throwing the error because I crashed two days when I deleted the original installation of work I guess.

Then it's because I've used the file 'try' once and I pooched when even I have re-installed 8.1?  Or is it a combo of 8.1

Assistant to put something in the drive?  Or can I go back and re - define something from the test site, or what?

I have now lost 3 days fart around this problem... am I pooched?   I do not have a complete MSDN Dev account so that I could

probably manually install a copy of the R2 2012 legit keys into a new virtual machine on PC, but y at - it another way

for the evaluation copy go even faster!

    Cheers

  • HP Pavilion 15 laptop-p051us: bottle-necking and Brighthouse Networking...

    Greetings programs,

I signed up for 35 G internet with Brighthouse lightning in August of last year. Worked great for two months, then started getting more slow slow and capped speed DL 12 G.

BrightHouse over the last two weeks came out and replaced all the cables on the House, the street and poles near home. Replaced twice modem (Motorola, only an Arris, now a huge Ubee modem. Thinking it was my four year old and put DLink upgraded router to a Linksys AC1600 model +. I even spent two days and six hours on the phone with supervisiors to Brighthouse trying different things. Nobody seems to know what to do. When I bought this laptop that is Windows 8... and has been finally updated to 8.1.

    BUT...

I'm still a bottle neck to 12g on the laptop... but devices ALL wireless, three tablets, three phones, PS3 (connected, but capped by Sony at 20G) etc. are the actual speed. ONLY my laptop is capped at 12 the wire or wireless... BUT when I got the service in August of 2014 all worked for two months. Laughing out loud.

I have rand scans using malicious software Bytesand Microsoft Security Essentials to see NOTHING infect my laptop. I am at a loss now what to do.
