I can't update my definitions of virus for Windows Defender (Vista Home Basic)

In addition, I am unable to connect with smilebox.  It seems that these programs need to connect to internet using something other than a browser because my internet connection is fine, but these programs cannot access the internet in order to work properly.

I was also unable to download/install McAfee until I did it in safe mode with network.  I could also sign in smilebox in SafeMode with networking, but when I went back to normal mode, I could not signed.

Hi suzeenole,

I suggest that you check your system for corrupted files.  You use the tool (SFC.exe) System File Checker to check and repair corrupt system files.  To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click programs, accessories principally made, right-click Guest, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.

2. type the following command and press ENTER:

sfc/scannow

The sfc/scannow command. analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.

In addition, you can also try several options in the section below on troubleshooting installation problems.

Hello mastersteviekun, you can possibly get the driver for your sound card from the web site of the manufacturer.

You should know that sometimes Realtek downloads can be a little slow.

  • Is there a way to disable the automatic creation of a restore point for Windows Defender, when he made an update of definition of the window? It is for the definitions of update itself, not the option 'restore point before the scan' can I disable with a

I want to keep only a single copy of a System Restore Point that I created mine so I know when I did and why I did it.

With Windows Defender, I noticed that a new restore point is created whenever there is an update of Windows definitions, if I use the method of automatic or manual update.  I found that when I opened the system restore and found a new copy with description: "Installation: Windows Update.  In the history of Windows Defender, I noticed that the time corresponded to when the update the definitions file.

I unchecked the box under Windows Defender does not create a restore point before a scan of the system.  I tried the Google search to find answers and can't seem to find someone mentioning this.  Also MS sites does not seem to explain on the restores automatic system during the update of the definitions.

I'm also curious whether Windows Essentials will have the same problem that I am planning to use Essentials instead of Defender and thus get rid of Avast.

    Hi Dudeus,

Yes, it is not possible to disable your system being created before windows updates restore.

I already told you why you all these listed KB915597 updates: they are all updated to sequential definition for Windows Defender, but these updates have nothing to do with your computer "[slow]."

Your problem with one, two or three of the following:

    1. "remnants" of your previous install of Norton Internet Security and McAfee Security Center (the previous freebie from Comcast);

    2. your Trend Micro subscription (or trial) have expired before installing Norton Internet Security; or...

    3. a hijackware infection.

Since I installed the updated definition for windows defender-KB915597(Definition 1.21.1279.0) 03/03/09, I was not able to install the new updates. I don't know why, but none of the updates I have been install, or at least try, are installation and saying "Success" next to them. I've used different methods to dispose of everything, if I have any, virus and still have not seen any progress. And unfortunately, I deleted all my restore points to keep the memory on my laptop. I have too many errors, report them all, but some of the things I did to check to ensure that I have no viruses do analyses of the complete system and remove a mysterious software they gave me an alert by (using McAfee Security). Any help will be considered. Help, please! :(

  • Can I update to 10 32-bit of Windows if I run Windows 7Pro 64-bit?

I trust currently some fairly old legacy 16-bit software and I can run on 7 Pro x 64 with XPMode - a bit of a pain, but it is essential software, so I do what I do...

I had someone test install and it works on their Windows 10... they have x 64 processor and run x 86 windows 10... other than having to change the default installation locations, it works very well.

My question is, if I have a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Pro installed on my laptop, when I'll update Windows 10, can I choose to install a 32-bit version?  And if I can't, will x 64 run 16-bit software?

    Help!

    Can I update to 10 32-bit of Windows if I run Windows 7Pro 64-bit?

No, at least not directly.  To do this (to change your number of bits), you need to wipe your drive and reinstall the new type-bit Windows you want.  But you also have to do the upgrade directly from Windows 7, if you want Windows 10 to be free.  So, here's what to do:

    1. be sure to save all the files you want to keep and have your ready installers for your additional programs, you'll want to install again.

    2 - pass from 7 to 10.  You will stay on 64-bit.

3 activate Windows so that he knows that this computer is allowed for the 10 free.

4 - Download the Windows 10 Installer to a port USB or CD and use it to clean install 10 Windows (32 bit this time)

Another option would be to retain the 64-bit, but start your 16-bit on a Hyper-v virtual machine software.  Best of both worlds and you will have to use more memory since 64-bit allows you to use more than about 3 GB of RAM.
