I have 1 computer and I'm the only user - why are multiple users?
Hello
I don't know much about computers and terminology. BIG PROBLEM. I'm the only person on my computer, I'm not on any kind of 'network' or 'homegroup '... I constantly have problems that lead me to believe that someone has hacked my computer. I honestly don't know how anyone could do this, but I have a few very strange settings, and I can't change!
Under group or user names there are 4 names. That's what I don't understand. Should not be a single because I'm (or should be) the only person who has access to my computer?
There are very suspicious files, folders and stuff on my computer and I have noticed in My Documents folder, there are a lot of files known as JScript Script file (js). I have hundreds (or thousands) of strange files and folders I can't open or delete! I can't believe that this is normal! I have Norton and scans lift you own.
I am extremely concerned because there is no one in my life, 'A', who has been personally harassing and stalking me for over a year. I have received and continue to receive hundreds of pornographic and annoying emails (sent in an anonymous way), I am constantly being registered for most pornographic sites, and the list goes on and. She has even copied pictures of me to my websites legitimate and used for its own purposes - essentially to embarrass me.
This is driving me CRAZY! And Yes, this person has always been incredibly hateful and full of a strange kind of "vengeance." The police are without help. The district attorney has been without help.
My basic question is - am I paranoid, or is my computer to access remotely?
I'd appreciate any help, comments, opinions, and others. Thanks in advance.
Here's how you can run a robust show:
- Guest account . Keep him inactive.
- Account named 'Administrator' : keep it inactive. It is too easy for hackers to guess.
- Your own account : keep active and use a non-empty password. Some people recommend that there not administrator privileges. Mine is but then I practice "Safe Hex" (see below).
- Save the account : every day I deal with messages from people whose password no longer works for some reason any. They are locked permanently from their computer. Have a backup with privileges to administrator account, it's a very easy way to work around this problem, as long as you keep a paper of the account folder.
About your computer after having been hacked: it's impossible for me to say. You must have machine examined by an expert. If you have reason to believe that it has been hacked, then you must format the disk and reload Windows from scratch. The following measures would make it virtually impossible for a hacker to access your machine:
- Use a hardware firewall to your Internet connection, such as a router.
- Keep your Windows Firewall active at all times.
- Keep your scanner active virus and up to date.
- Be careful with attachments, especially those from strangers. They might be infected.
- Even for drives flash you receive.
- Be careful clicking on links on suspicious sites, especially those associated with pornographic, gambling and high pressure, selling content.

I cannot perform certain functions because he says that I'm not an administrator, but it's my computer and I'm the only person who uses this computer
What are the functions? More global changes (changes to the system, software installation) require an elevation in Vista/Windows 7.
Changes to the built-in Vista administrator account
http://support.Microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=942956
User - recommended configuration (Vista and Win7) accounts
You absolutely don't want to have only one user account. As XP and all other Windows 7, Vista, and modern operating systems are operating systems multi-user with integrated system of accounts as default Administrator and comments. These accounts should be left alone because they are part of the structure of the operating system.
In particular, you do not want account only one user with administrator privileges on Vista and Windows 7 because the administrator account integrated (normally only used in emergencies) is disabled by default. If you use as an administrator for your daily work, and this account is corrupt, things will be difficult. It is not impossible to activate the built-in administrator to rescue things, but it may require more work you want to do. Better not to get into a bad situation at first.
The user account that is for your daily work must be a Standard user, with the extra administrative user (call it something like 'CompAdmin' or 'Tech' or similar) only it for elevation purposes. As a user Standard is recommended for security reasons and will help protect your computer against infections. After you have created "CompAdmin", connect to it and change your normal user account Standard. Then log on to your regular account.
If you want to go directly to the desktop and ignore the Welcome screen with the icons of the user accounts, you can do this:
Start Orb > Search box > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UACUncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null). MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

Use switch option appears after 5 years on Vista, and I'm the only user
Last night when I tried to shut down my computer like I always do, the option "User Swithc" appeared in the drop down menu it wouldn't let me use Restart, Shut Down or one of the other options. I'm the only user. I'm logged into my account and and off then with the warning that the other user will lose any unsaved work. HE DIDN'T THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE. Nor was he ever.
How can I get rid of this option. Also... When I click on start and down the options, such as program files, settings, etc. the blue highlite is only shown for a fraction of a second. I made no changes to my computer.

Please go through it,Disabling Fast User Switching in Windows Vista- Click Start, type gpedit.msc and press enter

Hi, I have all the software installed on this computer and have even updated before firefox. now, by clicking on the tab "check for updates" I get the above message. Since it is my computer I guess I am the administrator and I had no difficulties to install the software before. What could happen? appreciate any help on this. Thanks, michael
If he has problems with the update or the permissions then simpler is to download the full version and trash the version currently installed to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the file on the desktop disk image (dmg)
- Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
- Trash the present application Firefox to do a clean (re-) install
- Install the new version you downloaded
Your profile data is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you will not lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re) install Firefox.

Hello, you who knows:
My OS is Vista Home Premium SP2 and I am the only user and
administrator.
... But the other week, unable to access one of my files, I created
another administrator account, which appears as a different user on
my welcome window, but I couldn't do much with. Therefore, I decided that it would be a useless account for me to
have created.
... How can I remove this 'new' alternate administrator account?
For some strange reason, Vista Home Premium doesn't have
an option 'remove' or 'delete '.Can someone knowledgeable computer please tell me what I can do
to remove this other account?
I do not see it when my welcome window opens.Thank you for your attention to this.
marlem388Dear noomene K,
What a beauty to hear from you again and to see all of your great advice!
Your instructions to cancel/hide delinquency counts that I myself
created were certainly useful... Unfortunately, and despite everything, the problem remains.
I therefore scoured Internet for some other answer and found a
prompt command, I decided to try.
-Says the command prompt: net user administrator /active: Yes, I have
used for the account I wanted to keep and continue to use.-And then I went to the user account window that I wanted to cancel
and placed the command prompt: net user administrator / active: No..Who took care of my problem!
But you gave me a few instructions very well anyway, and I really appreciate
your help.Thank you.

The cd/dvd drive used to work properly. Now when I put a cd or dvd, it will not engage or start. I can hear him enter and try to start.
When you click on my computer, the drive does not appear.
Don't know how it disappeared. Could be that some Windows Update? or when I installed the new kaspersky (do not think that it was really a cause)
Not a Moody person so don't know what else to do. I did go back and do a restore, but that did not help.
Given that the drive does not work I can not use the original disk, I created when I got the computer. Computer is about 2 years old... maybe a little less.Oh, the only other possible cause I can think of is when I was wrong with my browser and load my att yahoo account. A representative of ATT spocked in my computer and worked behind the scenes to fix. Has they deleted my firefox and temporary files. Unfortunately I do not know exactly when I lost the cd/dvd drive. At this time, but I can't say for sure.
Let me know if there is something other information that you may need to help solve the problem. Thank you!

Try to scan your computer with RadarSync to find out if your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM driver is out of date or not. You can go for the free version. Once find you that it's really an outdated driver can cause the problem, then you can update the driver by searching in Google it or let the software do it for you.
I hope this helps!David
