The other would be to buy a program to copy such as SuperDuper! ($28) ou Carbon Copy clone ($40) and they can clone your drive system on a new drive. I've built a number of backup copies (10.7.5, 10.8, 10.10) for different purposes (development, experimentation, downsizing to re - purpose a 1 or 2 GB drive for something else...) With a Mac Pro and 4 Bay, you have a lot of flexibility.

  After an undetermined number of years Apple constantly updating software for older systems. Everyone does this, but at different times.  Thinking back on it with Apple, it was usually after a version of the system is about 6 years old and a whole lot of support recently made the break with the systems of pre - OSX 10.7.  If you want a browser supported for 10.6, you will have to look in other browsers that for now at least, still support 10.7.  I think that Firefox still doesn't work and I don't know if the branch of TenFourFox of Firefox will adopt now 10.6 users.   However, some app can use more carrots 6-8. Almost none can use all 12 cores.  When one of your apps look at the CPU tab in the activity monitor and see if you now use fully all 6 hearts.

  You have not said how you memory. Memory can be limited. In addition, sometimes the disk i/o is limiting what drive you have and how ae connected

  You do not all apps of third parties running in the foreground, but can still cause the problem. Boot in safe mode (hold down the SHIFT key when starting) and see if the problem persists when the screen saver is used.
