I have an external hard drive that I formatted using vista. I can't read this same hard drive with xp

I recently formatted a WD external hard drive via my computer vista laptop. I downloaded several MB of files on the hard drive. My Vista laptop crashed and I need a new hard drive. I'm trying to access these files through my XP laptop. I see the DRIVE - "D". However, when I try to access the drive, what happens with "the disk in drive d is not formatted" do you want to format it now?

That fixed my problem. I can now access this drive.

Thanks a lot for your help.
