  I suggest try to reset the Windows Update components, follow these steps:

  1. Open a Windows command prompt window. To open a command prompt, click Start , and then click run. Copy and paste (or type) that follows the command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:

  2. Stop the BITS service and the Windows Update service. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press ENTER after you type each command.
     • net stop bits
     • net stop wuauserv
  3. Delete the qmgr*.dat files. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt and press ENTER:
     Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat.
  4. If this is your first attempt to troubleshoot Windows Update by following the steps in this article, go to step 5 no proceed to step 4. Step 4 should be done only at the time the Troubleshooting If you cannot resolve your Windows Update problems after following all the steps but step 4.   Since it is a forum of number, not many people here can see that you have a serial number.  Running older software on the latest machines is always questionable.  There are many applications, I sitting on discs (some 3.5 or 5 inch disks) in a box that won't do anymore of that for the rest of their lives.

  If the disk has a problem then you should try to download instead.

  Versions of Windows beyond Windows XP are not entirely compatible with Acrobat 6. The first version of Acrobat that is supported by Windows 7 is Acrobat 8.1 (is no longer licensed by Adobe). The latest version of Acrobat: Acrobat Columbia, six versions more recent than Acrobat 6. You need to upgrade to get all the features of Acrobat.

  You can re-register Windows Installer and check if this helps-
  a. Quit all Windows programs.
  b. click Start, click run, type msiexec /Unregister in the Open box and then click OK.
  c. click Start, click run, type msiexec/regserver in the Open box and then click OK.
  d. restart your computer.

• Installed updates XP and now "help" gives just the error message and important icons in the Panel do nothing, HELP!

  Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows.  Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) won't fix this!
