  If the portion of the machine has activated - Simple file sharing (i.e. it is XP Home or it is XP Pro with Simple (default) file sharing) - while all file sharing connections authenticate as user 'guest '.  It will not matter what username / password you provide, it will attempt to authenticate as 'guest '.  If the guest user has received a password or the guest account is not active, you will experience the symptoms you describe.

  If the serving machine running XP Pro and Simple file sharing is disabled, then you should be able to connect by specifying the user as computer\user and the password to connect.  To turn off Simple file sharing:

All other 3 computers recognize and connect to the network with no probems, including an another Dell Inspiron also running the same version of 7 W bought the same month as this HP! I tried to launch the troubleshooting tool and even restore the computer to its orignal State; It woud work for a few days, then would not connect or recognize the other computers on the network.

Articles somehow helped, but just to let you know, when I go to 'Share with' option, for some reason any is that I've only got 'advanced sharing. Anyway I always tried to navigate and wander through the dialog box, and here are the steps I'd like to share:

  Local disk > share with > Advanced sharing > sharing tab > Advance sharing button > check the box "share this folder" > permissions * > click Add a button > click Advanced button > click on 'Search' > select NETWORK > CLICKED OK

  Once the NETWORK is added, I clicked on all the check boxes under permissions to "allow".

  

  He FINALLY solved the problem! I can access my own files on the same laptop when I go to 'Network' on the left side of the pane.
