I merged / flatten image in any way I can get to and one layer seems to keep back to 'normal' instead of 'linear light' mixture, it was set to.  Help!

View actual Pixels (100%) is the only way to see what really happens when you edit. Zoom 100% every pixel of your digital file is displayed by a corresponding pixel on the monitor. This is a 1:1 view.

For some reason (you need to ask an engineer PS) when you merge or flatten, the preview may change. But to be seen (the other before and after merge/flatten) is not accurate. Only the 100% view is accurate. This is particularly evident when you have a drawing the stroke or certain effects or filters that create a lot of detail or contrast.
