Then I hit enter to move to the next field, & Thunderbird changed the email address to a different address (an address that is different from my address book).

  Change your sign in the address will not lose your files or programs to disappear. But if it's a completely different story, apps that you purchased (or things within applications like music and movies) are not available for you since they were purhcased with another account.

  For this reason, the aliases are a better option. In this way, connect just with a different name, but still the same real account in reality.
