I tried to install SP1 for months - why I get error 80073712 continuously?

I tried to install SP1 for months and continually receive error 80073712.   Installation is expected to reach more than 50%; the screen would freeze; and the error message comes on.   I have windows vista Home premium - what can I do to remedy this situation.   Microsoft is now up to SP3 and I can't even receive SP1.   It's very frustrating.
