  No, you will not get an option to erase hard disk or delete partitions during the upgrade of your operating system. However, you will get this option during custom installation.

It's like a photo snapshot in time.  This gives you a CD, you can use to immediately restore your computer to the point in time where the image was taken - even all your installation and installs.

  If you want to create it, here's how:

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Choose system and security
  3. Choose the backup and restore
  4. Choose to create a system image on the left
