I want to stop Outlook express from my mail compaction.

He keeps asking to be compacted even after that I allow him to compact. When I say 'ok, compact' it takes less than 10 seconds to do. Just, it began to make the request in the last 3 days and keep praying even when I allow it.  Every 10 minutes on average.

OK done, only now indexing 'Documents and Settings '.  What does when it is indexing? Must it be indexing anything at all or something else?

If you use it, you don't need it at all. Read what he can do here.
http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/choose/windowssearch4.mspx

I have myself no use for him.

Is now OK OE? It is the most important issue.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :
    http://www.insideoe.com/FAQs/why.htm#compact

Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE works fine and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you do not. When you delete or move messages, the space they used remains until you compact.

Never touch anything until the compression is finished.* *.

With SP2, Automatic compaction in the background has been removed because of problems he has caused. Now, you will get a prompt to compact after 100 closures of OE, you need to do, and do not touch anything until it's finished. If you compact manually, at your convenience, this will also set the counter to zero. See this for more information:
    http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

If you are fully patched, you will now see a copy of your dbx files copied to the Recycle Bin as BAK files. If something goes wrong when compacting, the messages can be easily restored from this backup. A compact manual resets also the counter in the back of the registry to zero now.

To keep things running smooth and harden faster:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. It will eventually become corrupt and you may lose mail. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Always display the complete text and correct all errors when you ask about a problem.

ISPS don't like people using their networks to forward mail from other networks.  The symptoms you describe are usually the result of not properly is authenticating with the outgoing server or the use of a non encrypted SMTP connection (that is, port 25 instead of 587 or 465 or whatever your email port provider requires for encryption).

You have posted in a forum for Windows 7. If you want to run Outlook Express on Windows 7, be aware that it is not possible.

But there are many other available e-mail programs that you can run on Windows 7. No need to remove the old accounts Windows XP Outlook Express. Simply install any program you want and set up for your e-mail account.

Among e-mail programs are for sale and some are free. You can download the free Windows Live Mail to Microsoft, but I think it's a bad choice and I do not recommend it. But if you want a free software, feel free to download. install, try several and then continue to one you prefer.

You are compacting via the guest? Try it manually. There is a bug in SP3 that you should have installed years ago which makes the compaction via the quickie on Folders.dbx. You can see what folder it crashes on simply by moving this dialog box from the road entering the blue banner at the top.

Compaction hangs on Folders.dbx after installation of the SP3 for XP:

It is a known problem and will never be solved. As a result, compact your folders manually. The counter will be reset, and a compact manual won't hang it.

Click Outlook Express at the top of the the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work offline (or double-click on work online in the status bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.

If you have the habit of compaction before 100th closing, (i.e. once a week or more), you will never see the prompt again.

In regards to your problem may be related:

Outlook Express does not work under Vista and Outlook is a totally different program, so that the problem is not related and not even on the same machine.

Outlook Express downloads e-mail messages for the 2nd time which have been read and deleted a few weeks ago.  This happens periodically.  Repeated messages are usually a week.

Maybe they are still on the server (server of your ISP). Make sure that you don't leave copies of messages downloaded from the ISP server that may cause duplicate messages to download.

It's the only thing I can think of.

If you are unsure how to check your messages via the Internet site of the ISP, then check with them about how you do that. TaurArian [MVP] 2005-2010 - Update Services

Other programs can cause this.  If you have Windows Desktop Search installed, go to control panel | Indexing options (I think that's where he is) and disable indexing courses OE.  If this doesn't fix it, then its another program.

  • messages disappeared from Outlook Express (Inbox) e-mail account

Most of my messages "Inbox floder" has simply disappeared from my Outlook Express email.  There were some files with images on them that I really want to come back. I want to know if I can get back them on my PC and if so, how could I do.

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

    Recovery tools:

If you use XP/SP2 or SP3, and are fully patched, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:

    And see:
    http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:
