Outlook express asks me to compact files,.

Outlook express asks me to compact files, even if I left him he keeps asking more and more every 10-20 min no matter how many times I left it compact and files it ask me to do it again

Other programs can cause this.  If you have Windows Desktop Search installed, go to control panel | Indexing options (I think that's where he is) and disable indexing courses OE.  If this doesn't fix it, then its another program.

Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE works fine and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you do not. When you delete or move messages, the space they used remains until you compact.

Never touch anything until the compression is finished.* *.

With SP2, Automatic compaction in the background has been removed because of problems he has caused. Now, you will get a prompt to compact after 100 closures of OE, you need to do, and do not touch anything until it's finished. If you compact manually, at your convenience, this will also set the counter to zero. See this for more information: http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

If you are fully patched, you will now see a copy of your dbx files copied to the Recycle Bin as BAK files. If something goes wrong when compacting, the messages can be easily restored from this backup. A compact manual resets also the counter in the back of the registry to zero now.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. It will eventually become corrupt and you may lose mail. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

  • Pointer/file missing in Outlook Express 6? Not compact or export.

Under XP with Outlook Express 6. Msgs compacting works (until the last folder?) and then said terminte because the file is in use.  Does not say which folder.  I have not opened - I know.  Do not use to do this.  Have auto update so not sure when something has been corrupted.

This may be related to another problem.

When I tried to export these msg on a Vista platform I got msg that an Outlook file is missing.  But the attempt to export error msg does not say which file is missing.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the quick response.

I'm the compaction of the command prompt.

When you say "Click Outlook Express at the top of the folder hierarchy" - How do you get to this point?

If I can get the Outlook Express on the XP machine compacted, then want to export these message (I have thousands hundreds stored in folders) so I can import then to a Vista machine (my more recent)

You are compacting via the guest? Try it manually. There is a bug in SP3 that you should have installed years ago which makes the compaction via the quickie on Folders.dbx. You can see what folder it crashes on simply by moving this dialog box from the road entering the blue banner at the top.

Compaction hangs on Folders.dbx after installation of the SP3 for XP:

It is a known problem and will never be solved. As a result, compact your folders manually. The counter will be reset, and a compact manual won't hang it.

Click Outlook Express at the top of the the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work offline (or double-click on work online in the status bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.

If you have the habit of compaction before 100th closing, (i.e. once a week or more), you will never see the prompt again.

This is how you would normally import into Windows Live Mail. If all goes well it will give you enough of a jump start.

Copy the * ENTIRE * OE message store folder to a flash drive. (Folders.dbx must be included). Place it on the desktop or another location on the computer using WLMail.

Is Windows Search or installed Nero Scout?

In the case of Windows Search, (the offender #1), you must be told to stop indexing OE.

In the control panel. Indexing Options. Change. Clear the check box for Outlook Express.

In the case of Nero Scout, see point 2.3 page 8 here.
    FTP://ftp6.Nero.com/user_guides/Nero8/Scout/NeroScout_Enu.PDF

  • Invisible messages to Outlook Express 6 after failure "compact all folders.

I start Outlook Express 6 XP. On closing yesterday that I was invited to compact the folders - said yes, but he hung up at halfway and locked the PC and I finally had to force a power down. PC started today to find any message in most folders, including the Inbox. DBX files are visible and of reasonable size, and their properties say they are those that are used by OE, but show in OE as "There is no evidence at this point of view". Help, please, anyone?

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :
    http://www.insideoe.com/FAQs/why.htm#compact

    Why mail disappears:
    http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#mailgone

    Recovery methods:

If you are running XP/SP3, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
    http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspx

    And see:

    http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:

  • Outlook express 6 crashes when compaction

Outlook express 6 crashes when the compaction. I tried 3 times

Your best bet would be at this point to go to the file. Identities and setup a new identity.  This will give you a base of messages remained totally fresh.  Once it is installed, and then use file | Import | Messages and import them from the old identity.  Its a good idea to backup the message store also, as seems to be somewhat corrupt.  See also point 3 here (www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3) that corruption could be due to interference from other programs.

  • In Outlook Express, can not see the file tab, such as page moves right

I can't move the Outlook Express mail page to the right.  It just won't go further to the right.  I get the arrow on the right side, but he doesn't hover over.   So I don't see the file, only a part of the Mail tab tab (-Arnaud).

It is not really clear what you mean.  You can move the entire window of OE by clicking on the title bar (blue at the top of the window) and hold the mouse and then moving the mouse.  It is also not clear what you hear on the mail tab and the file tab.  Are you sure you're saying OE and not Outlook?  You can also try view | Layout to change what is displayed.

  • Lost in Outlook Express - trying to retrieve missing files

    Hello-

I hope someone can help me. Our desktop computer crashed, so rather that investing in a new system, we decided to use our working laptop and bought a box for the drive of the old computer motherboard, because that had not been affected. It now shows up as drive F when we plugged him (as an external drive). I'm recovering Outlook Express FOLDERS that I created on my desktop. I have spent countless hours trying to do this and can't seem to get it. We have used Outlook Express on your old computer, with COX as our email service provider and try even with that. I managed to install our identities without any problem, I can't do the next step that retrieves my old emails, including those appearing in some files I had created and had created some including Outlook Express.

Basically, I need to find the files in the folders on drive F (old hard drive) and copy them into my Outlook Express courses. I'm puzzled. I really need to find someone's address and it's the only place where I got it.

Any suggestion or help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thank you

    Audrey

You are in the Vista Networking newsgroup. On the current computer are you using Vista? If you are, you do not use Outlook Express. Please provide details.

How did you create records OE on the desktop? They contain messages, (eml files), or store the message dbx files? If dbx files, don't you include folders, dbx?

If necessary, can you still see the OE message store on the HARD drive old? It is the way, but do not have something else to see if you can find it.

In Windows XP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder Options icon | Opinion, or in Windows Explorer. Tools | Folder options | View.

The path to the message will be very similar to this:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Your User of utilisateur\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\ {long string of letters & numbers} \Microsoft\Outlook Express
