IDE to USB external hard disk not detected

Convert old IDE hard drive of the laptop HP USB. The drive uses two USB ports for the detection and power. The car worked well for a long time and now with recent updates, MS, AVG and so forth that the hard drive USB - IDE is no longer detected. This is true for my HP laptop and my Toshiba laptop. Both computers are running XP Professional

1. There is just nothing no error on a laptop

2. the player does not appear laptop computer oniither

3 tried to plug it into different USB ports, USB connection at the same time to the computer, plug in and unplug the USB to IDE - USB hard drive makes for two laptops

4 uninstall all USB ports and leave the computer re-autodetect, done for two laptops

5. let the IDE - USB hard drive connected to the computer and restart for two laptops - nothing

Hi, have you tried to remove Avg and re-install the drivers for USB. Have had problems of simler and found that Avg is interfering. I've now changed my Anti virus Avast. hope this is of some use.

  • External hard drive not detected with the error: "You must format the disk in the J: drive until you can use it."

    Hello

I have an external hard drive to work perfectly. I'm back from vacation, and it does not appear under "My Computer". It appears under "Devices and printers", however. This is a link to a screencap of Device Manager: http://i.gyazo.com/9e91e1d71ed32c55dba0419e79b499d5.png

The device in question is that of J:, and it says here that he has 100% free space, that worries me, because he had only 50 GB of free space when I used the latter. After that I open the disk management, I get a pop up message saying: "You must format the disk in the J: drive until you can use it."

How can I get my hard drive appears again?

    Thank you

  • Computer laptop 15-f211wm Mod #L0T32UA: USB external HARD disk and laptops not detected but used to be

My USB ports do not seem to work properly.  I used to be able to plug in my external hard drive and mobile phone to transfer files, but now I can't.  In the DEVICE MANAGER of the laptop, nothing seems to be wrong, no red or yellow warning.  However, the USB ports DO not seem to power the devices, my cell phone goes into charge mode and my HDD Seagate you can feel it vibrate slightly.  There are two USB ports on the left side and one on the right, and all three can not detect devices.  Help, please.

HERE IS a GUIDEto solving the problems of USB such as described in the post.  See if any of these help.  As you have posted in the notebook section, when you do that a single step to cripple, also remove the battery after the computer shuts down, unplug charger, too.  Then hold the power button for at least 30 seconds before feeding back.

BTW: have you tried to delete all things under the rubric of the USB in the Device Manager, then reboot to allow Windows to reinstall the USB ports?

  • HP Elitedesk 800 G2 SFF: external hard drive not detected in the BIOS. Only USB Flash drives are detected.

    Hi all

I received recently 2 new HP desktop computers.

    HP Elitedesk 800 G2 SFF

    HP Elitedesk 800 G2 TWR

The goal is to test our real W7 x 64 image on these machines and to inject the missing drivers in the image.

MDT 2010 to create a deployment on a USB hard disk drive.

This disc of deployment is already used on 16 different models of HP in the company (Elitebook, zBook, EliteDesk) to install our image so I know it works.

Unfortunately, the two HP Elitedesk 800 G2, I can't start the boot disk but I cannot to USB for a USB key.

The USB drive is not detected and not proposed in the BIOS Menu of STARTUP.

Only the internal HD, external USB Flash Disk, DVD and network devices are detected.

Here's what I already checked or tried:

    • Latest Version of the BIOS installed (2.05)
    • UEFI Boot has been disabled. (not supported by our record of deployment)
    • USB ports are enabled (front and rear).
    • All types of USB devices are allowed in the BIOS
    • The start command has been changed to start with USB devices.
    • Legacy support is active and Secure Boot disabled
    • Delete the keys to secure boot
    • Reset secure by default startup keys
    • This morning, I created a new disk deployment on a USB Flash drive and it works!

So, it seems that only Flash USB drives are detected.

I know it is possible to return the flag removalble on a USB device to cheat the system and make it appear as a disk fixed, but I want a simple solution.

Does anyone know a fix or a workaround for this problem?

    Thanks in advance!

For those interested in the answer, here's the final results.

It turns out that the hard 500 GB external drive can be detected if it is fomatted in FAT32.

It's strange because my 16 GB USB Flash drive formatted in NTFS works very well.

In any case, I'll create a FAT32 Partition to the Boot MDT files and put my picture (because the file is too big for FAT32 partition) on the secondary partition (formatted as NTFS).

Thanks to the technical pre-sales team of HP who helped me with this!

This thing have not even a letter such as C: (what internal hard drive) I watch the little arrow to show you, it is prudent to remove it so it appears here, what does I have a drive bad ext or what? Hello

I suggest you to assign a drive letter for the external hard drive and see if it helps.

    To do:

    a. press the Windows key + R and type diskmgmt.msc.

    (b) if the hard drive recognized in disk management and if there is no drive letter assigned, I suggest you do a right click on the drive and assign a drive letter and check if it helps.

    c. right click paths and the drive letter Change.

    Do one of the following:

    ·         To assign a drive letter if it has not already received, click Add, click the letter you want to use and then click onOK.

    ·         To change a drive letter, click change, click on assign the following drive letter, click the letter you want to use and then click on OK.

    d. restart the computer and check.

  • Hitachi external hard drive not detected on Windows 7. Disk Management displays "No Media"

OP: New computer with Windows 7 cannot display files on external hard drive Hitachi

My Hitachi hard drive is compatible with Windows 7.  This hard drive was working properly with my old computer using Windows XP.  I can see the device in the Device Manager, but I can't view the files.  In disk management, the drive is listed at the bottom of the screen, but said "No Media", however there is almost 50 GB of data stored.

The hard drive shows in the list of devices and printers when I opened that folder, but does not appear in the list of hard drives on my computer.

I still don't understand what happened, but I've decided how to fix it.

After trying my hard drive locked on 4 computers with Windows installed (two with Windows 7) and two with XP and having no success, I decided to plug it into a computer using a Linyx OS (Obuntu).  The computer recognizes my hard drive and open.  Then I was able to use the Windows System.  I managed to freeze hard drive again and he cured the same way.  Maybe this will help also, if you have access to a computer with this operating system.  Maybe a mac would also work.

  • External hard drive not detected

I have an external hard drive of 4 Marine to... .and a Macbook pro with the latest El Capitan... When I connect the external hard drive for Mac pro, an external hard drive can not detect, but there is a light flashing on the external hard drive. It worked well until last night after I used iTunes and went to another Mac. I still eject properly.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem

Try using disk utility to repair the disk. If the drive does not appear in the disk utility list, then he dies. Contact the manufacturer or supplier.

Shut down the computer, disconnect the drive. Wait five minutes and then reboot and reconnect the drive.

    Perry has soon

    Hi Perry,

Thanks for posting your query on the Microsoft Community.

According to the description, I understand that your external hard drive is not recognized by your computer.

This could happen due to some system conflicts.

    I need some information.

    1. What is the make and model of your computer / external hard drive?
    2. You get no matter what error code or error message?

    Try the methods.

Method 1: Run the hardware and devices Troubleshooter

Open the hardware and devices Troubleshooter
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/open-the-hardware-and-devices-Troubleshooter

    Method 2:

Step 1: I suggest you check in Device Manager if the external drive is listed there.

    1. Connect external hard drive to the computer.
    2. To open Device Manager, type devmgmt.msc in the start search box and press ENTER.
    3. Check to see if the external hard drive is listed.
    4. In Device Manager, expand the hard drive listed in the list of devices.
    5. If the hard disk is listed, are doing a right click on it > click Properties.
    6. In general, look under device status for the message. After back if there is no error message.

Step 2: Check if the external drive is detected in disk management.

If the hard drive recognized in disk management and if there is no drive letter assigned, I suggest that you right-click on the drive and assign a drive letter and check to see if it helps:

    Reference: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-add-or-remove-a-drive-letter

I hope this helps. Please let us know the results. We will be happy to help you further.

  • External hard drive not detected in Windows 8

I just bought a Dell XPS 13, running Windows 8.

I have two external hard drives from LaCie.

Disc 1 is used with a Lenovo X120e running Windows 7.

Disc 2 has two partitions, exclusively for my Macbook Pro running 10.9.5 and the other smaller partition is used to move files between Lenovo and the Macbook.

When I connect Drive 1 to the XPS 13, nothing happens. It is not turn nor it appears in Device Manager.

If I turn it on to Lenovo, it works very well.

When I connect Drive 2 to the XPS 13 (to the same USB port and using the same cable), he turns and is detected.

If the port is working, pilots work, cable works and Drive 1 works when connected to the Lenovo running Windows 7.

How can I get the XPS 13 to recognize Drive 1? There must be a way to do this without formatting again.

    Thank you.

The drive is visible in the BIOS or the mode without failure on the XPS 13?

You can also try to paginate the connection of the power supply in the drive that works.

  • external HARD disk, not to run anywhere

I have a Toshiba external HARD drive which has simply ceased to appear anywhere in my mac. It does not appear in the Finder, utility disc or /Volumes. When I plug it in, the light comes on and I can feel it running inside.

I have no idea how to solve this more than my research grew up in nothing.

Try with another computer, if possible.

At the very least, try with another cable, not through a hub, if you use one.

  • External hard DRIVES not detected

I recently encountered a problem in the recognition of external hard drives of the company. But the usb recognizes pen mouse drivers, card readers etc... can someone help me pls.

    I use HP pavilion G6 2005ax win7 ultimate.

If it is not giving an error message but it is to let you manually assign a drive letter, then the automount can be disabled (enabled by default).  See the jeffsrawr response in this thread to turn automount.

  • 2nd 2 TB Seagate hard disk not detected

Currently, my Dimension 3100 desktop, 2.8 GHz P4 w/HT, 1.0 GB of ram has a Seagate 2 TB (6 Gb/s) inside. This hard drive replaced two hard disks, size 1. TB and 500 MB. The original 2 TB drive is full, 85%, so I bought another hard drive, exactly the same style and size as the active drive (STBD2000101). I run Linux as my main operating system, which is a resident of GParted. After that I physically installed 2nd hard drive 2 TB to SATA2, I tried to put up with GParted from the first hard drive to SATA0. Although GParted indicated that the drive was present, when this player was selected GParted not reported "no device detected". Temporarily, I removed the original drive and installed the 2nd hard drive to SATA0 for the purposes of the implementation of the partitions and format it ext3 of the live CD. It worked for the most part, except that GParted reported the drive as 29 GB used, even after formatting again. To make a long story short, I did some troubleshooting and found that nothing is really wrong, except that the 2, 1-TB limit has been exceeded when I installed the second hdd. The BIOS recognizes the new HDD on SATA2. GParted, run from the original disc with Linux OS, see a player but is grayed out when the disc is selected. I can see there is a problem with the limit of 2.1 TB on the capacity of the drive. Unfortunately, I use GRUB legacy bootloader installed on the MBR. I hope that others have worked through this kind of problem. Please notify.

Thanks for the help. I knew why the second hard drive was not recognized. It is a matter of core, I use an old version of Linux. Recent kernels is not a problem with the detection of two hard drives of 2 TB. It is true that I have never exceeded the famous limitation of 2 TB. The kernel that would not see the second disc was 2.6.32. I now use the kernel 3.2.33. without any problem. Even if the drive can be detected by kernels older (for example. 2.6.32.59) there may be questions that deserve to move on to a core even more recent. "Grep sdb unpacking" command will display warnings if they exist.

  • Is it possible choose a removable drive (USB external HARD disk) for PSE 7 'at work '?

    Hello

I want to know if it is possible to choose directories on an external hard drive (USB to PC connection) to store both photos and files "working documents" used by Photoshop Elements 7 (catalog + cache thumbnails and so on...).

I said I want to install PES - 7 on the external hard drive, simply its document files.

    Many thanks for your reply.

    Pascal

PS Sorry for my English very poor...

If you ask to create a new catalog, use the Organizer catalog manager to specify a location for the catalog.  Which will store the catalog and the cache of thumbnails on your external drive.

If you have your images stored on this external drive, import them in the catalog.

  • Western Digital USB external hard drive not found by Win XP.

I have a new USB 2.0 TB WD My Book Essential that my system does not.  I took the first return to BB, thinking it was defective.  A new is similarly, and there is no indication that something is plugged into the USB port.  My system is: 2.8 G P4, 3G of ram, 850 GB on HD 3 internal, under XP SP3.  All 8 USB 2.0 ports work fine on everything else.  My system is well maintained with Virus and Spyware protection and registry cleaning and start cleaning.  Newspaper observer event system is without errors or warnings.  Device Manager reports no problem.

I tried all the suggestions on bonofan1823 post.  Reinstalled all the drivers and other utilities allowing to scan the USB ports. The drive is formatted NTFS according to WD.  I searched ghosts, 315539 devices. I used the command SFC, 3107747. I ran Microsoft Fix It--I deleted UpperFilters and LowerFilters entries by 925196.

The WD My Book has its own power supply, all my tensions.  The blue light on the WD drive and it's a small fan is running.  The drive does not appear in disk management or any where.  The icon does not appear on the far right of the taskbar and no audio sound is made when it is plugged into the USB port or powered.

Someone at - it any other suggestions?  Does anyone else have this problem?

    Thank you.

    Divya R,.

Thanks for the info.  I've tried the drive on another computer running XP Pro. and it was recognized instantly.

I found the driver ITS on the website of WD and installed on the computer.  No change, no recognition. WD has also provided a firmware update for the drive that I could not install because he could not find the drive.  I reinstalled the latest version of the BIOS (2005) for the ASUS motherboard.  I used an old record of 250G WD USB years and it still works.

    UPDATE *.

I bought a $10,00, 3 port USB 2.0 PCI card and plugged.  The WD My Book is instantly recognized and works perfectly. Problem solved.  The problem must be the motherboard ASUS or the BIOS on my P4 system.  I suspect that WD drive information was never getting to Windows XP.

    Thank you
