Implement RAID 1

I have two hard drives of 500G empty and start from scratch with a disc of Windows 7 Pro SP1 32 bit.  How should I proceed?

Without any knowledge of your computer or if you are considering a hardware or software

RAID 1 solution, it is impossible to guide you.

I would ask, why do you want to RAID however?

RAID 1 is good if you have a scenerio where the system should continue to operate in the face of failure of single disk such as a server or business system. Even in this case, the best solution is a separate

(Usually cheap) RAID card.

If the goal is the backup of the data, you would be better served using a single drive and do regular backups, because if something corrupts or deletes any data deliver on both drives at the same time on the RAID.

  • Qosmio G30: A few questions about the performance of RAID-0

Hi all, this is my first post here, so please be gentle with me.

I read a lot of posts explaining how to configure striping RAID-0 (and pitfalls) but I've not found anything that describes the performance benefits. It would be great to hear from anyone who has implemented RAID-0, with before and after comparisons of speed.

    The system starts twice?
    Applications load significantly faster?
Is significantly faster when you save large files? Or is it simply not useful?

All information of those in the know would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you, Bob.

    Hello

I used the Qosmio G20 a few months ago and I used the operating system on the HARD drive with RAID (a visible HARD disk) and without RAID (two visible HDD)
I didn t notice any speed restrictions and the laptop starts at the same time.

But I noticed different results please share with us ;)

  • RAID 0 Set up on Aspire S7

Hi all, I recently accidently deleted RAID 0 meta-data of my Acer Aspire S7-391 and I was wondering if someone could help me with relative to the implementation. I agree with wiping my drive completely because I just reinstalled Windows 8. I tried to access the Intel Rapid Storage Technology technology during initialization via Ctrl + I and F6 and neither have worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your help, I figured out by changing the BIOS in traditional mode, I could access storage technology Intel Rapid through which I could implement RAID 0 once more. Thanks again for your help!

  • Softward raid with vista 64?

I have vista ultimate 64 and would like to install raid 1 with two identical drives (not the boot disks).  Software raid is possible?

    Hello

Yes you can use software RAID (redundant array of independent Disk).
You can implement RAID at the hardware or software level. When implemented at the hardware level, seller of the equipment provides an interface to manage the tables and pilots to support different operating systems, with which you may have to work. Treatment for the RAID array is provided by a processor separate integrated in the RAID controller, offloading the CPU of the computer work. In addition, many RAID controllers often include a large dedicated RAM cache with battery backup. The combination of a separate CPU and a separate cache provides a substantial advantage over software RAID. Hardware RAID is usually significantly more expensive than software RAID built into Windows, but many manufacturers now include features basic on the motherboard hardware RAID.
Vista includes an excellent and flexible RAID levels 0, 1, and 5 application in the software. It covers the possibilities by any means, but it's certainly enough for some purposes.

Primary GUI (graphic interface) for the management of the disks under Windows is the disk management console.
Although disk management provides a solution suitable software RAID, hardware RAID is widely available, either the original seller of Windows or third parties, and it offers substantial advantages over software RAID. Hardware RAID solutions range from a simple RAID controller, integrated to the motherboard and fully integrated and autonomous subsystems. Features and costs vary, but all say they provide superior performance and reliability on a simple software RAID solution such as the one included in Windows.

  • Advice on which drive hard buy for Raid

I'm going to buy http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136544 8 these hard drives, and I'll use a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816131004 raid controller to implement RAID 3. Western Digital know that these drives are not suitable for the raid, disk only I can find, is a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136797. I was wondering if there is a difference actaul between these two that makes the difference. Also, I was wondering if anyone of you knows another hard drive that would be good for the raid which is less than $ 100.

Your choice of reader and the controller look good for me.

I have used a controller Areca with WD black for the past two years, and as long as you do not have a form any backup other than redundancy RAID 5 on your PC, you should be OK with the readers of 'consumer' (aka black WD, Hitachi sister, etc.) as opposed to "enterprise" drives for RAID (AKA WE RE3 RE4, Hitachi Ultrastar etc) systems.

    Records of the company are:

-usually best parts - possibly some companies choose the best boards with defects less for their dearest readers

-Sometimes a few features that help with vibrations caused by multiple drives in a PC working in tandem

    -almost always a feature that will keep the drive of the company to continue to try to correct any error while reading or writing beyond a certain number of seconds. WD calles this TLER (time limited error recovery);

I've seen individuals suggesting that setting the spin-up time is increased from the default.7 seconds up to 1 second when you use consumer readers to help prevent consumer drives marked as bad. I did this and I have never had a car abandoned in two years.

I have about 50% business (RE3 1 TB WD) and about 50% of consumer records (Black 1 TB 32 MB cache) that are very similar, with the exception of the firmware. In two years, I had a bad drive; No data has been lost, performance just the RAID and even that was pretty subtle. And by the way, it was one of the RE3 drives aren't infected, one of consumer readers! When I started with the WD drives, it was possible to download a software and to set the time on consumer drives TLER and gain many of the benefits models company without having to pay for more expensive readers. Then, a year ago WD changed their line WD Black to defeat this utility (it was a utility WD TLER!) to work with their readers of consumers; Yes, their were some upset users on this one!

  • Dry well EMC CX4 - 120 disks before the gift

We have an installed SC8000 Compellent, and I would like to find a way to erase (wipe of multipass DOD) data from the drives before you make a donation or surplussing safely our old CX4-120.

I came across this old thread, but it's a little bit conclusive and unresolved:

Anyone else have ideas on how to do better to achieve this? Also, I can't imagine there would be any sensitive data that would be on the OS on the first five drives SAN, right?

Thank you for all the ideas, people.

The easiest way is to implement raid groups 1 or more with readers supporting a raid 0 on electromagnetic compatibility (16 my head) or a maximum number. Then create a LUN, set up 1 server with a connection to the CX4-120, put the server and the logical unit number in the same storage group and use some server software to wipe the drives.

The reason for raid 0 is 2 times; I guess that you are not using raid 0 in production, so readers will be cleaned by the RAID 0 array, but it also gives you the fastest writing time while you let the software do the washing.

  • PowerEdge R720 and PERC H710

For the life of me, I can't the controller to detect the physical disks. These are Dell brand discs. Any specific ideas of the BIOS settings, maybe I need to change?

The box has been initially implemented RAID 10 on the S110 raid, but I removed that and tried with the software raid times off and on and still no luck.

Don't see anything that would indicate a firmware issue, but:

    BIOS v1.2.6

    Thank you!

If you have not changed the cable then this is the problem. The willing S110 to a different connector than the PERC.

  • Use of the RAID1 on the ESX host

    Hello

I'm installing ESXi 4.0 on a server with a P5M2motherboard from ASUS, which has a built-in RAID. I would like it to be configured in RAID1 to the fault tolerance, but has experienced an unexpected result.

I started by setting up my server with RAID1. During installation, I was asked to select the ESXi installation disc on. With the active RAID and installation of Windows, Windows would see the RAID as a single drive. ESXi is quite smart to know there are 2 drives same thought that the RAID is configured.

Should I simply configure RAID1, install on disk0 and understand that the RAID will replicate data on two drives? I'm just kind of confused installing ESXi introduced two discs instead of thinking only as you expect.

    Thank you

    Rob

This controller implements RAID at the driver level, not material.

If you need hardware RAID controller for RAID1, that's all.

    Hey!

Try to use vmkfstools on Vi remote CLI, but he says that he is not recognized as an internal or external command... Is there an easy way to share data between several virtual machines? If so, how? Also if we are implementing raid 5 are we building our vitrual (windows 2008 Server) with the typical c: or d: drives? That is to say. You put the Windows Server 2008 on a separate virtual C: drive and data on a disk separate from virtual D:? Or is it no more? What about the Windows swap files? Must create us virtual drives, JUST for page files? Sorry I know this is a lot, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

    1. is there an easy way to share data between several

virtual machines? If so, how? A CIFSor NFS share would be preferable. Since I got you guess the VMS are mainly Windows you want to go with a CIFS share. You can run a virtual NAS appliance  (http://www.openfiler.com/community/download/)

Also if we are implementing raid 5 are we building

our vitrual Server (windows server 2008) with the typical c: or d: drives?

That is to say. You put the Windows Server 2008 on a separate virtual C: drive

and the data on a virtual disk from D:? Or does not everything

more? Yes design you virtual as your physical systems i.e. separate Boot/system information application. just build you VMs how you would with physical systems (especially true of SQL or Exchange).

What about the Windows swap files? We create virtual drives

Yet, ONLY for page files? Never did it for physical so no systems

    klfi of Austria

Very good new because this gives you plenty of options. With a BR burner installed you have 9 bays 5.25 "left.

It is to install 3 cages SuperMicro (you don't need to install them all at the same time, but nice for the future) to add up to 15 drives 3.25 "in hot swappable bays. Or you can choose to use two cages SuperMicro for 10 discs 3.25 "and add 3 Addonics cages for a 12 2.5" additional disks.

Lots of choices here and you is not really limited by your business. You may be in terms of cooling, however.

C: Velociraptor for OS & programs

D: 3 x Velociraptor in raid 5 on the mobo for the file exchange, media cache, this preview as you intend

E: initially 4 or 5 drives (1 or 2 TB, up to you) in raid 3 for media

RAID controller: Areca ARC-1680 iX-12 with 2 GB of cache ECC and BBM.

I suggest the version 12 in version 8, because he has the ability to extend the default cache 256 MB up to 4 GB, although one wonders if anything more than 2 GB is interesting, given the price difference between the 2 and 4 G sticks.

With this configuration, you have the option to add a multitude of disks to expand your storage space and increase the speed of your raid, if you wish.

So all that you need is that Supermicro two cages, disks and the Areca controller with cache and BBM.

    I hope this helps.

  • Oracle 11g DW - RAID5 or RAID1 + 0?

    Hi all

For an implementation of DWH Oracle 11 g, what drive arrangement is preferable, if only load & the data query performance are taken into account: RAID1 + 0 or RAID5?

    In addition, only RAID5 also automatically given stripe (i.e. RAID5 = RAID5 + 0)?

Ofcourse RAID5 will protect only against a single disk failure (in the case of no help). with RAID1 + 0 protection against multiple disk failures.

Please tell us what is the preferred option.

    OracleDisciple wrote:
As this would be an implementation of the warehouse with loading data pure data per day during off-peak hours and sessions of massive request for the rest of the day performed once, RAID5 give equal or slightly lower performance compared to RAID1?

Unknown. How the storage system implements RAID determines productivity. RAID5 can be indeed not faster than RAID10 if RAID5 is made for a better storage system architected and RAID10.

The coefficient of basis (con), making it the most expensive RAID5 is calculation of parity. What makes cheaper RAID10 (pro) is to have a disk mirror set (and a whole bunch of disk controllers extra) to maintain the e/s readings.

Modern storage system, there are two features that often deny these pros and cons parity calculations are discharged to the storage group. So write an I/O for RAID5 is fast for RAID10 as the calculation of parity does not affect the waiting time (from the database for example) for that i/o to complete.

The second feature is the in-memory cache. Modern storage systems may have caches of 0.5 to RAM and bigger memory - and the memory are inexpensive, large storage system caches become the norm. This means that the vast majority of all i/o on the storage system may be against the cache memory - so little time spend waiting for disks to towers.

Recommendation of Oracle is SAMI - Stripe and mirror everything. This is mentioned in the Metalink, books of kitchen CARS and best practices notes and so forth. At the same time you can get a white paper from EMC for example, co-written by Oracle Corp., proclaiming just how fast and efficient RAID5 on EMC storage array networks are.

So it is more clear and decisive line between different implementations of RAID. We must look at just how the storage array is built and well he is capable of dealing with a specific implementation of RAID.

Can you get the external floppy drive (floppy drive) and load the RAID drivers using this disc which should be connected using the USB port?

  • Satellite U940 PSU6VA - recover after removing the software RAID

    * My specifications: *.
    * Model: * Toshiba Ultrabook (Satellite PSU6VA - 00S 002 U940)
    * Operating system: * Windows 8.1 x 64 (upgrade of Windows 8 x 64)
    * Storage: * 500 GB + SSD 30 GB HARD drive

This particular model of Toshiba comes with two hard drives (a HARD drive and SSD) and uses the SSD for caching purposes. I think to disable this caching so that I can use the SSD for other purposes.

However, according to the observations of MannerhagenVPO in [this thread | http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=79976]:
-This caching is implemented with a software RAID
-To access the SSD, you must remove the RAID software
-Once deleted, software RAID can be restored by an authorized Service Professional. Even the Toshiba recovery media will not be able to restore it.

I'm not really worried about permanently losing the caching features. What concerns me is this: the Toshiba recovery media will always be able to restore Windows 8 (but without caching)? Or the recovery media Toshiba will become completely useless if software RAID is deleted?

As far as I know the RAID features will be removed if replace you / remove or change the SSD or HARD disk drive.

In any case, using recovery media created by Toshiba Recovery media creator software you should be able to reinstall the Toshiba preinstalled system
