Implementation of storage fibre channel (ESXi 4.1) with jumbo frames

I'm looking for 'official' instructions for the activation of the jumbo on a host ESXi 4.1 with storage fibre channel frames. I don't know if the instructions are different, or if anything else needs to be adjusted according to your storage space.

I looked at the instructions from this page here and it seems simple enough. It also seems that you can keep your groups of existing ports rather than having to delete and then recreate. If these good enough instructions apply it for the side host?

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & externalId = 1003712 & sliceId = 1 & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & dialogID = 322680138 & StateID = 1% 200% 20322684038

I saw this page for iSCSI storage so that made me think if the procedure differs according to the storage.

What is the reason for having to recreate them?

If you are in 4.1 that you don't need to recreate anything, just activate via the CLI.

And you can enable frames on a standard port group or is it just for VMkernel port groups?

You can turn on the VM and vmkernel exchanges. Together you must also make the "virtual cards", i.e.: on the Vmkernel virtual network cards and cards of virtual network in the guest operating systems. On the Windows 2003 server, I think you have to use VMXNET3, but on Windows 2008 the e1000 should support frames too.

As has been noted before just make sure that any layer two devices in the path is configured to allow the large frames. You can use this to confirm both Vmkernel and invited: http://rickardnobel.se/archives/992

    Hi all

I need to create a Cluster of 2003 of Windows (MSCS) as well as storage Fibre Channel shared on vCenter Server 5.5.  I need to work so that if a server crashes, the second server goes into action and support.

I have a two-node Windows 2003 R2 64 bit running on the same host.  Virtual machines are created with an operating system installed.  I use for Fibre Channel storage and I have created and attached 6 discs in thick eager set to zero.  I also created and configured two NICs (Public and private) on each node.  The shared SCSI Bus is set to "Virtual" on both nodes.  I managed to get the two nodes to market and both can see the 6 disks.  The disk configuration is identical between nodes.  All drive letters to even the SCSI virtual peripheral nodes (1:X).

I have not yet created the Windows cluster.  The problem is that, in node 1 when I create a folder in one of the attached disks, I don't see this folder in the same drive in node 2.  Is it a problem, a bad configuration or is this a normal behavior?

Are there any other setup that I should consider to make this work?

It's the doc that I follow:

    https://pubs.VMware.com/vSphere-55/topic/com.VMware.ICbase/PDF/vSphere-ESXi-vCenter-Server-55-Setup-MSCS.PDF

    Thanks much for any help!

Since you not yet configured the cluster, this is normal behavior. Go ahead and configure the cluster, then the software cluster will manage the discs... do what you try can cause data corruption.

And after the configuration of the cluster, take in mind that the drive will be online to a single node by time, as the Microsoft cluster is an active/passive cluster, in this way you will be able to see the disc and online with the letter assigned only on the active node.

  • Support Fibre Channel Port

I would like help on activation and configuration of a Fibre Channel port on 2 of my fabric UCS of interconnections. An external storage device will be connected to those ports.

    Hi Mark,

If I'm not mistaken you what you ask, it's you want FC ports on 2 of your FI UCS, which will be connected to a storage device (storage of direct connection) (fabric of interconnection--> storage array).

An excellent guide on how to implement is below.

  • Fibre Channel card configuration on the host esx 5.1

    Hi all,

I have three 5.1 esxi hosts.  I have new port 2 8G Fibre Channel cards installed in each and pass the cable FC since the card port goes to the fiber.

It's my first time in collaboration with CF cards VMware hosts, what else should I do for these cards to be active or updated network in?  A good explanation, Docs and or video would be extremely welcomed.

Just ask EMC technology to make the zoning on the SAN switch and the LUN masking and card introduced volumes to your hosts on the side storage... after the volumes, simply go to your ESXi, rescan your HBA and create data warehouses.

Are there tool or a way to find solutions for businesses who want to enter the field with Essentials more, but because of the e/s, we need more storage gigabit NIC.

Is the next logical leap of 1 gigabit 10Gbe? Or is it Fiber Channel?

    Hey...

"fibre channel" is essentially a storage architecture...

You are considering fiber ethernet by opposition to the copper perhaps?... 1000BASE-SX or LX for example...

That there is no increase in bandwidth over copper gigabit... It is used to connect longer distances, copper CAN... or connect two buildings where a connection copper between two buildings with two blocks of independent electricity is against the regulations (it is the case in the United Kingdom),

The next viable step upwards of copper gigabit "done, team/shared resources" several gigabit copper... or 10GBE which maybe more fiber or copper.

We use dual 10GBE fiber in our ESX host and our Center database to the production and satellite floor data centers.

Hope that helps... after if is not the info you wanted... :-)

    Uplink Ports Fibre Channel

Manage ports Uplink Fiber Channel FCoE traffic between the interconnection of fabric and the next layer of the

SAN storage network. All FCoE network-related traffic is pinned to one of these ports.

By default, the Fibre Channel ports are uplink. However, you can configure them to work as Fibre Channel

storage ports. This is useful in cases where a Cisco UCS requires a connection to a DAS storage

    Device (DAS).

My question is, how the FC Port could handle FCoE traffic? My understanding was that FCoE will be lifted and Enthernet connection only.

  • Fibre Channel frames - UCS

I was wondering if it really is possible to have the Fibre Channel frames running on a UCS?

I read these two articles that provide some great information on the implementation of the Fiber Channel Jumbo and Jumbo frames:

    http://datacenteroverlords.com/2013/04/01/Jumbo-FC-frames/
    http://www.ccierants.com/2013/10/CCIE-DC-definitive-Jumbo-frames.html

Everything in the SAN I'm administration has the ability to set the MTU value until 9036 except for the UCS. For example on NetApp train I can set the MTU by interface on the Cisco MDS I can set the MTU by vsan. However in the UCS Manager when I go to class of service of system quality, the option to set the MTU of Fibre Channel value is grayed out and it doesn't look like there is in any case override the preset frame size. I can set the MTU of the best Effort however my understanding is traffic Fibre Channel in the UCS will use the class system of Fibre Channel.

Also I noticed that I can set the maximum size of the data on the vHBA field in the UCS Manager but my understanding is the maximum that can be up to 2048.

When you create a service profile, you are asked if you want the storage (= CF) or not; you say no!

If you missed this step and you have created vhba, just remove them later.

It is not possible to disable vhna.

  • 4.1 and vCenter ESX only allows to use 1 Fibre Channel LUNS

    Hello

I have 8 blades ESX 4.1 (build 348481) in a Cisco UCS 5108 chassis. Each blade has 2 x HBAs available. I also have a fiber channel storage array that is configured to provide 2 1.8 to LUN (for now and in the future).

When I go in vCenter and select one of the ESX servers under "Configuration"-> "Storage adapters"-> "Rescan all...» "each server detects the table (and several paths towards it) but only shows a single available LUNS (LUN 0) when 2 LUNS should be available (LUNS 0 and 1 logical unit number). See the image below.

    esx1_singlelun.png

Now, the thing that confuses me is that when I get on the command-line of the ESX via SSH server and run "esxcfg-mpath - b", I see a list of all the paths including the paths to the LUNS 0 and 1 logical unit number (see output below). Any ideas on why ESX and vCenter authorizes me to LUN 1?

Its because the table shows two LUNS have the same value of ID of Page 83, ESX both think you have 2 paths to the same LUN.  Paths multiple ESX driver uses the value of the ID of Page 83 to determine if 2 LUNS are the same device.

It was a problem with that code, that it resembles yours-based Solaris beginning according to the tables and other tables that used code based on Solaris pre-COMSTAR, as well as tables that use SCWIST.

There is really nothing you can do about it, because it is a bug in the software of the array (it shouldn't be exporting 2 LUNS different with the same ID value of Page 83 - it is a violation of the standard).

    Hello everyone,

    1. what kind of cards are required for the FC and FCoE?

FC = Fibre Channel HBA Qlogic QLE2462 or OEM of Emulex.

FCoE = cards of convergent network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibre_Channel_over_Ethernet)

    2. do I need these adapters on both sides, server, and storage?

HBA is required on the server. They connect to FC switches. The switches connected to the SAN, who also has the appropriate maps build-in.

    3. what switches and cables are required for the FC and FCoE?

    FC switches

Cables could be Multimode, multimode or copper.

  • Local storage and multiple ESXi hosts

Hi, I was wondering how vWorkspace manages local storage in an environment with a single server Vcenter and two ESXi, with a local data store each.

If I store a 'master' (I mean the gold statue) vm on the local storage of an ESXi, can replicate vWorkspace this virtual machine to the local storage of the other ESXi as Citrix VIAB?

If not, how can I use both my ESXi servers with local storage and maybe provide some sort of HA?

Am I forced to use a storage shared, if I want to be able to deploy clones related both to my ESXI?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Use vSAN, or no matter what virtual SAN Appliance as an iSCSI SAN storage to prosecute two storage facilities... You can replicate between the two servers and same LUNS are used by vWorkspace.
