Local storage and multiple ESXi hosts

Hi, I was wondering how vWorkspace manages local storage in an environment with a single server Vcenter and two ESXi, with a local data store each.

If I store a 'master' (I mean the gold statue) vm on the local storage of an ESXi, can replicate vWorkspace this virtual machine to the local storage of the other ESXi as Citrix VIAB?

If not, how can I use both my ESXi servers with local storage and maybe provide some sort of HA?

Am I forced to use a storage shared, if I want to be able to deploy clones related both to my ESXI?

Thanks in advance.

Hello

Use vSAN, or no matter what virtual SAN Appliance as an iSCSI SAN storage to prosecute two storage facilities... You can replicate between the two servers and same LUNS are used by vWorkspace.

However with a system with local storage would you set it up the same way, and whatever it is must be amended to change to get ESX to write log files to the different partitions?  I would like to configure it for future expansion for when the enterprise package is configured.

Yes, I would set up the same way with an ESX with local storage server and nothing needs to be changed for the vmekernel right at the partition/var - unless of course you want to write to a log server that you need to change a configuration file to point to the server logs.  If you talk to the ESX Enterprise license you willnot have to change partiition table-

Also on something else if you don't have a SAN/NAS storage you will also need to create a VMFS partition on the local data store to host your virtual machines

  • Rename local data warehouses of ESXi host

    Hello

How to rename local data warehouses of 5.0 ESXi hosts.

Is it simple; Vsphere Client > right click on the local data store > rename?

Or host must be in maintenance, or reduced, something like that?

    Thank you

    Mihir

The ESXi host internally uses the data UUID store rather than its "friendly" name

    Example: / vmfs/volumes/3dfd1a21-63969d0d-8d9b-004328272635 /.

That is why - as mentioned in the other responses - rename a datstore can be done at any time without affecting the functionality.

  • Addition of storage internal to ESXi host

    Hi all

I have a Dell server that accepts SATA drives (no RAID configuration).  Currently, I have a 1 TB in this drive and plan on adding a second 1.5 TB drive.  I've never added storage to ESXi and wonder if I should wait no problem.  It is fairly simple to get ESXi to see the new disk and use it as a supplementary data store?

    Thank you

Additional storage should be detected. Use the vi client and go to the configuration tab select storage and analysis for new storage LUNS. Select the discovered storage. Once added, you should have a new data store.

  • Do I need an IP NIC of each Esxi host address?  VMs needs access to the storage network?

    Hi all

The issue go, I have a host machine with 3 nic cards - > 1 for production network, 1 for the management network and 1 for the network backup.

The guest PC VM inside will be connected to the 3 network,

But for the host himself, will be used for management and backup only.

T1) is the bears from production on the need for level ESXI host having an IP address as well?

Right of Q2) now my host use internal storage. If I'm to migrate to a SAN storage, I have 1 more network for storage.

I understand that the configuration of virtual machines and their data are assigned and stored in the data store that is made visible at the level of the host.

They must for the virtual machines access the data store, join the storage network as well? or they are access to the storage through the host

T1) is the bears from production on the need for level ESXI host having an IP address as well?

A NIC itself does not require an IP address. Which IP addresses are required for VMkernel port groups (for example, networking, vMotion, storage access,...) as well as virtual machines.

Right of Q2) now my host use internal storage. If I'm to migrate to a SAN storage...

No, a virtual machine (i.e. the guest operating system) does not require access to the system of storage, only the ESXi host.

  • The SSD drives on local ESXi hosts dilemma...

My company went ahead and installed the SSD drives locally in each HP Server, so this basically means I can't my hosts in cluster and enjoy the HA\DRS... in my view, correct environment vMotion?  I found a few links referring to this scenario, but it was not clear if the failover will work if one of my hosts breaks down?

I use them and set the swap file to be stored on the local host.  This save space you on your back-end SAN and reduced some IO.

If using local storage is important for your VDI sale, I would take a peek at Nutanix, which is a host ESX SAN in a (basically they use local storage and make it work like a San that rocks.)

I would hold these SSD at the moment, I do not know how CBRC will apply once VMware he applies fully.  If it works anything like Citrix Intellicache, then you could end by using these SSD as the volumes of local cache.  For now though I would not try and design their use.

  • How to configure and use the local storage dirve and usb

My company bought a server DMM cisco as well as 10 players of 4310 g dmp.  I tried to work on mine here to get it all working.  Let me expose what we would do first before to get into the details.

The cental DMM will it play any content and be used to create and manage the content here at company wehre I am.  However my boss wants to send dmp individual players (4310 g) out to our factories across the country.  He wants me to be able to creat content or allow a person managing the exact address to edit the content and then push the content from the server DMM to corporate local DPM record either on local storage or attached thumb order.  I guess my questions on what are the following.

    (1) is it necessary to push the content locally for playback?  Willingness to play the content of our dmm on the wan to do lots of traffic?  Presentations could be as simple as a welcome page based presentation playing images video and flash.

    (2) based on local content would be a wise decision I'll have to see exactly how this is done poorly.  In the settings of the dmp, I see the setting of local storage and turned it on and set to read/write.  In regard to the command of thumb gose exactly how I implement that so that DPM can see?  I plug to the back of the drive, and it seems that it is active but the management console of the player I don't see anyway to actaully see if she knows the USB.

    (3) how will push the content for local storage and control of the DMM thumb?  It looks like I can send things to the storage internal if package transfer and or advanced/DPM deployment tasks or server file.  What exactly is the difference between these two?

    (4) Lastly how I actually play the local content of the dmp?  Can I set this up on a schedule of the dmm just like I would if he played the local dmm?

I searched through the documentation, but I have not found any good docs who are clear to actually how to do these things.  So, any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Glen,

Here are the answers to your questions

    1) is it nessesary to push the content locally for playback?  Will  playing content from our dmm over the wan be to much traffic?   Presentations could be as simple as a basic welcome page to a  presentation playing video and flash images.

It is not required to push the content locally, you can also play the DMM directly. The main advantage of playing on the spot, is that you can transfer the videos several hours or days before the presentation begins to be played if you deploy content off hours and then, when he's ready to start playing the new presentation.

If you play directly the content of the DMM, the content will be transferred at the time of the DMP starts playback. This may fail if the WAN link is saturated at that time here.

    2) If pushing the content local would be a wise decision I am having  difficulty seeing exactly how this is done.  In the dmp settings I see  the local storage setting and have it turned on and set to read/write.   As far as the thumb drive gose how exactly to I set that up so the dmp  can see it?  I plug it in the back of the player and it looks like it's  active but from the management console of the player I do not see any  way to actaully see if it knows about the usb thumb drive.

You don't need to do anything to enable USB storage, simply plug it in. To confirm that the DMP is able to see it properly, the simplest way is to connect to the DPM via FTP and confirm that he has a «usb_2» directory This "usb_2" directory, where is the USB drive is mapped.

    3) how will I push the content to the local storage and the thumb drive  from the DMM?  It looks like I can send things to the internal storage  though the advanced tasks/deployment package and or file transfer to DMP  or server.  What exactly is the differnce between these two?

The task of "File transfer" will just do this, transfer a file to the DMP. The deployment package is smarter and will transfer all the contents of a presentation and organize them in a structure that can be used to read the content locally. You should always use the deployment package.

    4) finally how will I actually play the content from the local dmp?  Can  I set this up on a schedual from the dmm just like I would if it was  playing from the local dmm?

Yes, she may be scheduled as any other presentation.

I suggest you have a look at the link below. He explains the steps required to configure the deployment package and read the content deployed with it.

    http://www.Cisco.com/en/us/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_2/DMM/user/guide/DMP/CDs.html#wp2188026

I hope everything is clear now, but if you have any questions, let me know. I'll try to answer.

  • Shared vs datastore stores local data and DNS in 5.1

I read page 56 of the vSphere, ESXi, vCenter Server 5.1 Upgrade Guide

It addresses the issue of DNS load balancing and vCenter Server data store name.

I think it's to discuss the issue of shared storage and multiple hosts accessing a data store-same and that each host must VMware it the same name, due to how 5.1 doesn't solve VoIP DNS names, but now uses the DNS name for the data store.

I have no shared storage.  They are all my data store (3 now 3 guests) local.  I guess I have in no way the need to appoint all my local data stores the same.  Correct?

Here is the text directly from the page 56:

DNS load balancing solutions and vCenter Server Datastore Naming

vCenter Server 5.x uses different internal numbers for the storages of data than previous versions of vCenter Server. This

change affects the way you add NFS shared data warehouses to the hosts and can assign the vCenter Server updates

    5.x.

names of host IP addresses versions before version 5.0 vCenter Server convert data store. For example, if you

mount a NFS data by the name \\nfs-datastore\folder, pre - 5.0 vCenter Server store versions convert the name

NFS-data store to an IP address like 10.23.121.25 before putting it away. The original name of nfs-data store is lost.

This conversion of hostnames to IP addresses a problem when using DNS load balancing solutions

with vCenter Server. Replicate data and appear as a single logical DNS load balancing solutions

data store. The load balancing occurs during the conversion to IP host datastore in solving the

host name to different IP addresses, depending on the load data store. This load balancing happens outside

vCenter Server and is implemented by the DNS server. In versions prior to version 5.0, features vCenter Server

like vMotion don't work with this DNS balancing solutions because the load balancing causes a

data store logic to appear that several data stores. vCenter Server fails to perform vMotion because he cannot

recognize that what it considers multiple data warehouses are actually a single logical datastore that is shared between

    two hosts.

To fix this, versions of vCenter Server 5.0 and later do not convert names to IP addresses data store

When you add data warehouses. This measure of vCenter Server to recognize a store of data shared, but only if you add the

data store for each host in the same data store name. For example, vCenter Server does not recognize a data store

as shared between hosts in the following cases.

-The data store is added by hostname and IP address on host1 to host2.

-The data store is added by host name to host1 and host2 to hostname.vmware.com.

VCenter Server to recognize a shared data store you must add the store of data of the same name in each

    host.

You have reason - the section relates to the NFS shared storage - with the same NFS server load balancing is multiple IP addresses - in older versions of vCenter as the name of the NFS server is converted into intellectual property that could be different that would cause problems with vMotion and other opt vCenter - with vCenter 5.1 NFS host name is maintained.

  • Mac OS x won't start on mac pro esxi host

We have the latest mac pro machine functioning as a construction of host 5.5.0 esxi 2718055.  We have setup the virtual Mac machine of the as a waiter in a magic triangle to our Mac OSX windows domain configuration.  Everything was up and running for some time now not really used because we delayed the purchase of our projected deployment Mac until this year.  I logged on today, and he says he has several updates and necessary to restart, so we issued the command reboot. Now the machine won't start upward.  It starts the boot process you see the Apple logo and progress bar starts moving on a 1/4 of the way and then it just turned off. I tried several of the commands below in the link, but nothing works, it just turns off. I tried to use my mac with vm ware fusion and the connection to the host and always change. I have triple checked that I am in the comments window active when you press these commands, but the problem is it only stays on during approximately 5 seconds then stops. I have removed from the inventory of esxi and re added, as well as restarted the ESXi host as well.  The virtual machine is sitting on the local storage of the esxi server.

    https://support.Apple.com/en-AU/HT201255

Has anyone else had a problem similar to this?  I'm getting to this section and the progress bar starts to go, but then stops and turns off virtual machine.  How can I enter in address this further.

Okay, so I went through the list and now I got using the command option r. tried before but maybe I press the keys long enough.  I was using my mac book pro and pro fusion to do all this. Couldn't make it work when you use the client heavy vsphere on my windows machine. Repair disk permissions is grayed out. I ran check disk permissions and got a ton of errors, ran check disk and he stopped saying repair the disk. Ran repair disk and he stopped to say that he cannot repair the disk, backup as many files as possible, reformat the drive and restore your backup files.

Is there another way to try to fix this sucker, or is he at this point a POS and build a new one?

It takes 17 minutes at best (more time) on "verik" with 2 vCPUs.

We would really like to migrate our physical postgres server in VMware, but we cannot justify it doing so unless he can perform at least as well as on physical hardware. (We tried to store the database on the local disk and mounting NFS host datastore; similar performance in all cases. We also checked adequate bandwidth on our links for storage and front networks.)

We reviewed several postings on execution of the guests with more than 1 vCpu and think we understand how vSphere CPU coscheduling works. But in our scenario, without conflict of use of CPU resources, we do not know why we're having performance issues.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

    Craig

First, why OS 32-bit VMS with 16 GB of RAM?

My first and very strong suggestion is to go for the 64-bit version of CentOS, EAP is known to have poor performance. Run us multiple virtual CentOS 64-bit machines, and I can't say that we have unexplained performance issues.

You might try to twist a little bit the 32 bit existing OS, but I don't expect a big improvement. Keep this divider = 10 in your kernel parameters, but if you like to try again with simple CPU add 'nosmp noapic nolapic' kernel parameters, those can drop the percentage of time processor rdy one quite a bit, at least I saw that happen on busy ESX host. Also assign some pages of huge memory in the Linux kernel and configure PostgreSQL to use.

Your BIOS settings also appear to be inefficient, the General recommendation is to disable the CPU features on the ESX host preloading since when the CPU executes several processes (VMs) preload results in a high number of failures which is just waste of cycles CPU.

Equipment training on Software Prefetch Prefetch: disabled

    Hardware Prefetcher: disabled

But still, go for 64-bit operating system.

  • 6u2 ESXi host nested on VMware Workstation for Linux referee v12

    Hello all, I have

I have a lab environment virtual running in VMware Workstation for Linux v12, and my ESXi hosts do not work correctly on one of the virtual networks. All my troubleshooting suggests a problem with nested ESXi hosts that may be a bug, but I want to assure you that I did everything properly first. That's why I post here with the hope that if I made a mistake that maybe someone else can point out he me.

    Physical system

8 core Intel Xeon 2.1 GHz CPU

    128 GB of RAM

OS - kernel Linux 64 - bit w/3.19.0-32-generic Linux Mint 17.3 (fully updated from this announcement)

VMware Workstation 12 Pro - 12.1.1. Build-3770994 (fully updated from this announcement)

    Nested ESXi host VM

ESXi v6.0.0 (Build 3825889, completely updated from this announcement)

4 cards 'physical' (only 3 used for now)

-all use the e1000 NIC hardware virtual, but also tried vmxnet3 NIC with no difference

    -vSwitch0 use vmnic0 & 1 vmnet16 of virtual network in a pair of active / standby

    -vSwitch1 uses vmnic2 on network virtual vmnet18

-vmk0 used for management on vSwitch0 and vmk1 for iSCSI on vSwitch1

-"Promiscuous" mode and forged passes enabled on all Port vSwitch groups (activating or turning off these features makes no difference)

    Test performed until now

I checked that all the IP addresses and network masks used are correct.

With the help of vmkping I ping other nodes on the network vmnet16 with success.

With the help of vmkping I tried to ping the other nodes in the network vmnet18, but that has failed.

I have depolyed other non - ESXi VMs on the vmnet18 network, and they are able to ping each other, but are unable to ping or ping by the ESXI host.

I tried various material virtual NIC as mentioned before, but without changes in the results.

I tried to use only local network instead of the vmnet18 guest network segments with no change in results.

When I find out the status of the network adapters on the ESXi host through vCenter or host incorporated client vmnic0 & 1 time display network information, but vmnic2 shows no networks. Yet, I know that there is a network with different VM communicate on it. Moreover, I was able to get all of this work on a Windows system running 10 Workstation (this is the laptop that my employer gives me with).

Having built nested ESXi labs on different platforms as well as physical environments in the past, I'm very confused as to why I can't get this special configuration to work. At this point my gut tells me that this is probably a bug any with the nested themselves ESXi hosts. Since I can get all this work on vmnet16 including the management of ESXi hosts and the VCSA that I use, I am sure that my vSwitch configuration is correct (other than the IP address space and vmnic configurations is bascially the same). Because I can get other virtual machines to communicate over the network vmnet18 I don't see how can be a VMware Workstation for the issue physical Linux host. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? I read on the ESXi hosts nested under VMware Workstation after having known problems and bugs with networking. If anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks for any help others can provide!

    Kind regards

    Patrick

Well, the problem is now resolved. The problem was what covelli was trying to explain, but I couldn't because the physical host network adapters being mentioned.

The problem on the Linux host, but it was a problem of permissions with the virtual Ethernet adapters. The following article has the fix:
With the help of Ethernet virtual cards in Promiscuous Mode on a Linux host (287) | VMware KB

Even if I launched the workstation under the root user I have yet met this problem and which still makes no sense to me, but change the permissions solve the problem. I was not getting an error message on my Linux Mint and Ubuntu system, but when I tried on a second box of Linux Mint that I just got the error has been generated, and the error message was the above link it contains.

    So, here's what I learned:

    (1) the question has nothing to with a VMware Workstation definition that you can configure.

    (2) the question has nothing to do with a physical network card.
    (3) the question has nothing to do with any vmnic on the nested ESXi host.

    (4) apparently virtual Ethernet adapters are not the correct permissions when created.

All you have to do to fix this is:

    (1) open a terminal.

    (2) run the command ' sudo chmod a + rw/dev/vmnet * "(don't forget to run this each time that you create a new virtual network).

You can also create a group, as shown in the link above and simply give this group the correct permissions. Personally, I think it's easier to just give everyone the rw permission.

I appreciate the help that others have offered. I did not understand what was asked for in previous answers because of the terms that have been used.

  • ESXi host running 6 VCSA disconnected from the vCenter

    Hi guys,.

I have a weird problem with my vCenter build 6. Single cluster of ESXi hosts. Running VCSA 6.0 and 6.0 ESXI. Making a storage of the vCenter vMotion initially got stuck at 77% and the ESXi host running the disconnected from vCenter vCenter. But I can connect directly to the ESXi host with vsphere client and see the vCenter VM works perfectly well. If I try to manually connect host ESXi and vCenter, I get the error "Failed to contact the host specified") both are in the same subnet and VLAN. I can migrate to other virtual machines without problem. I even restarted the host and yet I am not able to connect to vCenter. The host connects to vCenter if I reboot vCenter, but after a few minutes, disconnects again (even if no task does run on this topic.) I have no HA or DRS enabled at this point that I build this new environment and only presented a single LUN as a store of test data to the cluster.

    Any ideas?

OK, I think I fixed that or have at least a work around. So the underlying question was hiding ID mode/CPU EVC. I'm under the cluster to a level of EVC to reduce until I have migrate workloads from old environment and I think that this created a problem for the unit vCenter. To resolve this problem, I turned off the unit, directly connected to the ESXi host that had the camera running, edited the virtual machine and reset the masking of CPUID. Also, I've hidden the flag NX/XD of the guest. It's temporary (I hope) as once I increase the EVC to the Haswell, I will expose the NX/XD comments and test. For the moment, it is of the workaround I did. It may be of some use to someone.

  • List of all virtual machines running on a local storage

Y at - it a script when it is applied to the virtual center would show the virtual machines that are running on a local storage of an esx host.  We have about 40 esx running on virtual Center host and there are some VM running on local storage that we have to go offshore, but I need a list of these virtual machines.

If it helps the naming convention for the local storage data store is "exhostname_local".  This is the norm for all hosts.

    Any Advisor.

    It must be Friday

    Try it like this

    Get-Datastore local* | where {$_.ExtensionData.Host.Count -eq 1} | Get-VM -Location $_ | Select Name

  • PS6500E and VMWare/ESXi 4.1

    Hello

Small question, more a validation test:

I have an EqualLogicPS6500E with 4 ports of both controllers connected to a switch, and each ESXi host has 4 links of iSCSI network dedicated to this switch.

Stats show that we cannot not probably 4 all connected at the end of the host (4 guests) and the 2 links would be probably nice. I need also the switch ports to spare for an additional EqualLogic SAN at the pool with the first - and we are from ports. At the same time, I can't really not extend more than switches I want the disturbance to try to add a new Dell Powerconnect to ring 2 (bottom of linked basket).

4 network cards ends by a software iSCSI adapter in ESXi.

What is the best way to remove unwanted links 2?

    I guess:

    (1) remove 2 of the 4 VMKernel vSwitch iSCSI ports

    (2) remove 2 of 4 iSCSI vSwitch NETWORK cards

Isn't it? I have a feeling that I forgot something... I have not set these manually - rather, I used the setup.pl script provided with the MPIO EqualLogic to bundle driver VMWare.

    Thanks a lot :)

    Tim

You too unbind 2 VMKs swISCSI Module first and you can begin to remove the VMKs the vSwitch. I also prefer a reboot of the host after having finished the job.

    Kind regards

  • Popup of local storage that cannot be granted or denied

Computer of my mother who is an iMac running the most recent version, has begun to show this popup last night when she goes on shockwave.com to play games.  It says something about the local storage and gives you the ability to allow or deny.  (Sorry I don't have a screenshot, but I'm on my computer after working with him for hours).  The problem is that you can not click or either allow or refuse - he won't do anything.  I tried the tab options and it would move but nothing if you hit enter or SPACEBAR.  The only way out is to leave the site.

I don't really know a lot about Adobe Flash so bear with me please.  She uses Firefox, but the same thing happened in Safari when I went to shockwave.com.  He arrived in Chrome at the moment.  The computer is almost new and I checked and the last version of Flash has been installed.  Just to try it, I uninstalled Flash and reinstalled and exactly the same thing happened when I went to this site.  She says she's only seen on this Web site.

I have Firefox configured to always ask before running it.  I changed it so that it always runs for this particular site, but the popup was always there.  I researched and researched and exhausted all the options I can think.  It is not just a matter of the popup is annoying, is the fact that it will not go away, or allow you to click on what it is about that.  My elderly mother has very limited abilities and understanding when it comes to technology and online security is a huge concern.

Does anyone have ideas about what could possibly help?  I appreciate all the help and assistance.  Thank you.

Yes, it's a symptom of our anti-clickjacking too careful logic.  This happens usually when something animated moves behind the dialog box, or sometimes, it's just specific resolution/zoom-level.

Unfortunately, as a browser plug-in, it's really hard to say whether or not we are above the thing on the screen, and we do not accept clicks on the dialog boxes for security unless we know that you actually see them and not other thing (for example "click here to win! 1. '') superimposed on top of it.

Honestly, in 2016, restrict the ability of content to store data locally is not really buy you something meaningful in terms of privacy and security.  If you want to avoid persistent tracking chips, your browser's private browsing mode is much, much more efficient, and we pay tribute to her.  We also clear the Flash Player local shared objects when you clear cookies from your browser (to the extent that your browser tells us that you have done this).  Aversion for Flash Player local shared objects is largely based in the superstition at this stage.  The ability for marketers to create followed resilient, persistent is much more powerful in native HTML and JavaScript.  Feel free to look through my feeding activity to find similar posts, where I pointed the academic research on the subject, etc.

    So, here's my pragmatic recommendation:

Go to settings > Flash Player > storage and choose allow sites to record information on this computer

Where you do not want websites to save persistent information, use the private browsing mode.

    This accomplishes two things:

-Content stores data locally, while everything seems to work normally to the content.

-Flash Player nor the content will throw errors or permission dialog boxes

-All data is stored in a temporary location, which is destroyed when you exit your private browsing session

This gives you the best possible user experience and the best defense against tracking in Flash and HTML/JavaScript.  If you are in the business to uniquely identify people, it is a general practice at this stage to use all the technologies available for the redundancy and resilience, including techniques of both local fingerprinting that on the server side, so just to "solve" the Flash Player vector by disabling LSO does not significantly help.

Unfortunately, the threat of clickjacking requires us to implement solutions less than optimal and the decade or so of experience with very smart people working on it shows that it is a game of whack-a-mole.  It is best to avoid scenarios where the dialog box gets jumped by adding fields to the trust list, or simply by allowing access to the total of just.  The ideal solution would be to move these to the browser native user interface dialog boxes, but which requires buy-in from all browser vendors involved, etc..
