Import Aperture to Lightroom library questions

Fully, I have to confess that maybe it's my fault as a beginner LR, but the import of my opening is an unusable mess and I need help/advice! I use LR CC and opening 3.6.

I have 1 library in about 57 000 pictures opening. Before importing to LR, I checked for files offline, accurate, that opening is expected to generate large previews and selected the option keep my files referenced (as opposed to pulling all the images in a LR catalog).

My photos are all on a disk external HARD with a hierarchy like this:

/photos_volume

/ < year of filming folder >

/ < month shoot folder >

/ < MM-JJ-AA name of shooting >

/ < MM-JJ-AA name of shooting >

.. and so on. Large. Oh, and the files/projects in Aperture are arranged in the same way as folders on the volume.

Yes, after the execution of the importer of opening (who ran - NOT a JOKE - 2.5 days), I find myself with a catalog not organized. It seems that he took a modified photos of a given meeting then put them in individual folders, named "MM-DD-AA. These are all JPEGs - OK, fine, I can live with that. But the worst thing is that I found myself with a jumbled folder hierarchy. There is a folder called "04" with all my shoots since April, regardless of the year (because my shoots all begin with the number of the month). However, for the folder called "07", there maybe 25% of my photos from July, the rest are outside of this folder and the files that are on the same hierarchical level.

Bottom line, it didn't even close organized the way it is in the opening or the way I want, and I don't know if I should just fix everything by hand over time, or to small libraries in Aperture (maybe one for each year?) and import it.

Thanks in advance for help or advice!

Hello!

Sorry to hear that you are having problems of migration. Examine the options defined in the Aperture import dialog box

If you decide to generate previews of size for the adjusted images (1) the section referenced will have an additional option. To let your files exactly where they check the first option in the referenced section (2)

If you do not check the second option in the reference section (3), then you will get the additional folders created like the ones you describe. In your example, you mention that not all 07 files are there. This could be because not all of them have been adjusted in Aperture. If this second option in the referenced section is checked then the previews are added to the same folders as their original images are in and none of the additional folders are created. That leaves you with the same folder structure, you started with and a few other files for adjustments.

You might want to set up a small Aperture library with a subset of your images and experimenting with the importer of Lightroom settings to get the result you expect. Once you have the good value options so you can turn it loose your complete library.

Oh, also be aware that if one of the images in your library are actually MANAGED and UNREFERENCED they will be drawn in records created by Lightroom.

Hope that helps!

  • How do you export an Aperture to Lightroom library?

I have Lightroom v. 5.x and I want to export my library in Ant opening opening not lose my changes or metadata.  In other words, I don't want to import all the raw files in Lightroom and have to change them again.  I thought I could export all projects jpg and then import them, but I'd rather have to change again without losing quality and RAW files.  Any suggestions?

Sorry, but that's not an option - LR can not use the Aperture library - you need to export your photos (either the originals or the current version) and import into LR

Export as a JPEG of high quality images gives you data loss minimum with sizes of files a little reasonable - you really want without data loss, then export as TIFF that require a lot of disk

  • From Aperture to Lightroom - my images in Aperture adjusted are imported as smal jpg files in a folder in Lightroom

I've been using Aperture for many years. My photos are raw files and I adjusted the slot Aperture.

When I moved from Aperture to Lightroom the adjusted images when moved to a separate folder as jpg files (the size is pretty smal comepared to raw)

My question: do I have to set all my images once more to get a large enough file to print or are the some kind og shortened?

    Hi kari b lk,

Could you please confirm the workflow how to transfer your images from Aperture to Lightroom?

Have you export images in Aperture, and then import them into Lightroom or you haven't imported the plugin integrated in Lightroom?

See this FAQ if you have transferred via the plugin: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/aperture-import-plug-in-lightroom-faq.html

  • Import Aperture library to LR (10 of Windows).  Cannot select the library - treated as a folder!

    Hi all

I'm trying to import my Aperture (about 15 images of k) on Windows 10 LR library.  I copied the library directly from the Finder to an external HD and from there to my hard drive of the PC.  When I browser in the library, it is considered to be a folder rather than a file.  This means that when I click on library.aplibrary to open, the button is 'Open' and that selecting this bore until the next level of the subfolder, rather that select the import library.

Any suggestions?  Is there something I need to do to prepare it for export at the library on the Mac?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi TrudeBordello,

You would not be able to import the Aperture library on the Windows computer in Lightroom, because the Plugin is designed to read in the library on Mac.

Please follow the document: Help. Import photos from iPhoto and Aperture (Mac OS)

Then I suggest you to import the Lightroom library records.

    Hi stuartm70056443

I'm sorry, but there is no available plugin to import the photo library. At least not for the moment. The photos app is new, so there might be a plugin for photos in the future.

For the moment I do it this way: export the photo of the photos as "unmodified original" app, and then import it in Lightroom.

If some how changed the order sorted, you can go back sorting to 'Added A order' in the toolbar.

or, choose all the photos and click the view menu and sort to choose the sort order.

  • Problems with the re - import processing in Lightroom 5 of the external drive.

I do not know what question to ask, so I'll explain what I was doing, what I'm trying to accomplish, and how I failed on this point. Several months ago, I moved a few folders to Lightroom from my hard drive to an external drive using the command 'Remove' Lightroom (right click on the file name). (Maybe I should have used the exported file as a catalog rather command.) Now, these files are marked with a "?" next to them, but I still can't view the final version of the image on the back of the hard drive in the library mode. I want one of the folders back into Lightroom so I can re - treat a few photos and re-export. I am assuming that all of my previous changes will be intact. First tried to do this by using the "Add a folder" command by clicking right on the icon "+" adjacent to the list of folders. The files were imported, but not in the original file of the same name folder. I have no idea where these files were imported. Tried to do this again, but Lightroom would not allow me to select the import button, only the cancellation was an option. Then I tried to 'Find the missing folder' by right clicking on the name of the folder in the Lightroom library. I selected the folder on the disk external and "Merged" in the existing file. This resulted in duplicate efforts, but Lightroom still "file not found" so that I can modify it. I watched the Adobe tutorial on importing files from an external drive. I'm puzzled. Use Lightroom 5. Should I have "build" Smart previews initially? Would that 'saved' my changes? #1

I am assuming that all of my previous changes will be intact.

Incorrect, remove the photos from Lightroom can cause you to lose your changes. All the other stuff that you tried will not bring back your changes.

I watched the Adobe tutorial on importing files from an external drive. I'm puzzled. Use Lightroom 5. Should I have "build" Smart previews initially? Would that 'saved' my changes? #1

Import from anywhere won't bring back your changes. Smart insights will not retain your changes. Leave photos in Lightroom is the way to keep your changes.

If you ran out of space, the method for moving photos while preserving your changes and free up space on a disk, is given here: Adobe Lightroom - find folders and files moved or missing

You have a recent backup of your catalog file, before all of these disorders with respect to your current difficulties, that's happened?

  • Problem with the importation and storage of library

I have sewing miss the logic in the import and storage of the photos in the library. This causes a situation that whenever I need a picture I need to go to C: and import it. My library is almost empty and I don't see how the images can be stored. In any case, this has created situations where I open the import window and I can see the pictures, but I can't access somehow? I get same messages telling me that there is that a dublicate somewhere, but where, remains a mystery. I am so set on logic in windows to manage and store files and which confuses me maybe? Is there a tutorial "how to import and store your images in Lightroom? Enlighten me about the logic of this.

    Thank you

Lightroom is a database; not a file browser. A file Explorer "focuses on" your records, sees that the pictures are here and allows you to work with them. Lightroom does not. He knows only the photos that have been imported into Lightroom. Once the photo is imported into Lightroom, then Lightroom knows the location of the photo and it's metadata and you can perform tasks (such as editing on the photo). At no time does Lightroom contains your photo. At no time Lightroom stores your photo. But since it is not a file Explorer, if you move or rename or delete the photo outside of Lightroom, then Lightroom no longer knows where's the picture (it is not a file browser) and if the photo is reported as missing (it has a question mark icon) and you can no longer perform tasks on this photo.

Therefore, once you import a photo in Lightroom, you must perform all the management of this photo of in Lightroom. This means do not move or rename or delete the photo in your operating system or another program. You will need to browse/search the photo in Lightroom, not your operating system. All the actions performed on the photo must be done in Lightroom.

Why? A database allows you to organize in a way that is not possible (or possible but very difficult) to do in your operating system. The main tool of organization ensuring (in my opinion) by Lightroom's keywords. Keywords and other metadata (captions, titles, collections, etc.) give you the opportunity to organize in ways that folder organization cannot reach.

In addition, Lightroom allows you to simplify your workflow (if you want). My workflow is very simple. In my workflow, there is no need to move photos from here to there, to reach the organization. A photo comes out a camera and is placed in a folder by default (by date of capture), and he never moves out of this folder again. Instead, I use the keywords and other metadata to enable me to quickly find my photos, and another advantage is that I don't no need to know the pictures are found in the folder. With 22000 photos, I just can't remember what they are stored in folders - it is a task that is impossible for me to do. However, I can find any photo quickly; for example, if the content of the photo is a skyscraper, I simply tell Lightroom to find all my photos that have the keyword "skyscraper" and Lightroom will find that almost instantly and I didn't even have to know which folder the file was in. It is difficult for me to imagine a simple workflow.

Note: you can continue to use the files as a method of organization, you don't have to use keywords, but you must "respect the rules of Lightroom" and use Lightroom to move pictures from here to there, and you must use the methods of Lightroom to rename your photos; etc. And of course, if your organization only be made via the files and folders, you do not get profits of keywords and other metadata.

Then, I suggest you do the following with your workflow:

Import photos into Lightroom once and only once. After that, there are all the management of the pictures that have been imported into Lightroom. Photos should be assigned keywords as appropriate and enter captions, titles and other metadata. All the searching and browsing of photos that were imported should be made in Lightroom, preferably using keywords and other metadata.

  • Not able to re - import images into Lightroom after upgrade Windows 10 system

A brief history: I've upgraded to Windows 10. The video driver kept crashing (I do not do a clean install, upgrade) and I decided to uninstall the driver and do a clean install of it. To do this, it was recommended that I have started in safe mode. I'm locked down because it asked for a password that I didn't because I used a PIN. A boat full of minor issues as well as the fact that he seemed to be in no way around the issue of safe mode password pushed me to reload the OS I did a new SDS. All right. I kept the same letters to my external storage drives. When I installed LR, I discovered that Windows has changed my drive 'K' to 'E '. I changed it back, but she is now TWO drive letters.

Fast forward to LR: I don't have records of my 'K' drive in my library.

At this point, I resigned to re-import files. Despite the 50 or more, I can do this. Well, that's weird: when I choose 'Import' thumbnails appear and then the 'DOUBLE SUSPECT"are of course are not checked! Clearly LR is telling me that these files are already in LR, but where? The files that I CAN import are ones I removed LR.

    ANY suggestions?

    Thank you!

Fast forward to LR: I don't have records of my 'K' drive in my library.

Reimport the files will not fix the problem, it will most likely make the problem worse.

You need to find photos in your Lightroom library (instead of re-importation) module, and then include this file, they are, according to Lightroom.

    Steps to follow:

    1. Click on all photos
    2. Disable filters (Ctrl-L for Windows) or Cmd - L for Mac once or twice
    3. Sort photos (view-> sort-> filename)
    4. find one of these photos by file name scrolling upwards or downwards until you find the photo in alphabetical order
    5. Determine the folder is to right-click on the photo and then go to the folder in the library, which should highlight the folder on the left in the library panel (if all goes well, once you find the folder for a single photo, you should be able to find the records for all photos)
  • How can I avoid importing video in Lightroom CC?

    Hi all

I use Lightroom CC on my iMac to catalog my photos, a task I find really perfect for Lightroom.

However, I also use my DSLR for shooting video´s, I have Edit with Final Cut Pro. Lightroom is _not_ a part of the workflow import/editing video, so I really don't want Lightroom for all videos in addition to all my pictures from imports.

    My question is:

How can I setup Lightroom so that it is no longer import videos?

My current workflow is tedious, and really no one I love: I import everything in Lightroom and then manually delete all video´s.

    Your help is appreciated kindly!

    K

LR is not particularly good at separating the types of individual files in the import window. However, some of the third-party plugins generally provide the type of filtering require you. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly which ones do, but you can try this one Rob Cole as starter, http://www.robcole.com/Rob/ProductsAndServices/ImporterLrPlugin/ , or http://www.robcole.com/Rob/ProductsAndServices/OttomanicImporterLrPlugin/

I don't know about Aperture but Lightroom must be updated to version 5.7.1 to open the A7 II RAW files.

I suspect that your copy of opening just need to be updated as well.
