Import multiple host/Virtual Machines

We had a user remove several virtual machines and hosts of our vsphere. Are there recommendations on the best way to re - import otherwise than manually, one at a time?

Thanks in advance

or if all else fails, you can do it the old fashion way... but PowerCLI, will be probably your best way to do this depending on how much the guests and the hosts must be added to your vCenter inventory.

    Hello

Don't worry about this as you would know if you need a Virtual Machine (and few people use one).

  • How is it important to enhance virtual machine hardware level if you don't need the extra features the latest offers?

Are there benefits or reason to pass the levels of virtual machine hardware if you don't need new features later versions give you?

We are getting ready for VSphere 6 and begin to migrate some of our guests.  Most of our virtual machines are at levels 7, 8 or 9.

From what I've seen, the features of material level 10 and 11 are not everything what we need on most of our virtual machines.  I'm happy to walk if later versions of material are better, more stable, etc and we should upgrade the hardware even if we don't need the extensive features.

    Mike O'Donnell

    Hi Mike,.

VMware sees as a best practice to run on the latest version of material (see the section of the Virtual Machines on this page: KB VMware: vSphere 5.x upgrade to vSphere recommended 6.0) and if you encounter a problem with a virtual machine, support may ask you to update the version. In practice it might give you more stability or some performance enhancements.

I was like you although I don't necessarily keep my VMs up-to-date at the hardware level. I make sure they are relatively recent but.

You want to make sure that all cluster hosts are compatible on all hosts. the last thing you want is to have a failure and knowing that the client cannot run on a different host due to incompatibility.

  • Import of existing virtual machines to VMware server

My company has several virtual machines created with VMware Server 2.0.  We want to do a proof of concept for virtualization in production using ESXi environment.  Instead to install guest OS on a new machine of ESXi freash, is it possible to import a virtual machine created in VMware Server 2.0?  This should earn a quite some time.  Also, if possible, ESXi accesses a UBS device to copy the files of the virtual machine locally, that is, a USB HDD?  If this is not the case, can use us the VM converter to move to ESXi?

    Thanks for your help.

    RC

Check the converter.  Probably the easiest option.

  • Best way to import a new virtual machine?

Hi all, I used the standalone converter to convert a SCO Unix .tib in a virtual machine image and upload it automatically to the server ESXi 5. An image of 8 GB, took 6 hours.

Strange, I thought, so I run the converter again on the same file, but this time just saved locally on the same computer, Windows converter was turned on, it took 15 minutes. If for some reason it takes ages and ages of transfer on the server ESXi 5.

Is there a faster way to transfer it on? I'm going to live soon (test right now) and have the server offline for so long seems unreasonable. Is there a way to manually copy the converted during the first virtual computer, and then add it to the inventory? I'm a little new to this!

Have you used VMware Converter 5 with the installed server option?

In this case, take a look at for example Re: poor transfer rate using Converter standalone 5.0 compared to the 4.3 to find out how to speed up the converter by disabling SSL encryption to see if it changes anything.

  • import the vSphere virtual machine

The VMs are directly transferable between vSphere and Fusion of note - you all first to export vsphere as an OVF and then import it into a Fusion-

  • Offline host, virtual machine running, can not connect from the console

I have a box of ESX 3.5 U3 that runs on an IBM x 3850 I've lost any connection to.  The host and guests all show in VC as disconnected, but all guests are still running.  I feel that it is running out of disk because there is an error message on the Alt - F11 screen that says cpu0:1024) VMNIX: & lt; 0 & gt; SCSI: device can be offline - recovery on failed command error: host 1 channel 0 id 0 lun 0.  No lights error on the server or players.  If I ssh, I get ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host.  If I go to one of the other Alt + F, I can type a logon, but he never returns with a password.  The server responds pings and has backup management networks, but those who don't offer no connectivity either.

All guests are on SAN LUN with 1 exception.  I tried to turn off one of the servers and the re-registration that it on another host, but it won't because there always is in a disconnected state.  I tried to remove the aggressor, but he sat in class for almost an hour now.  I would prefer not to have to drop this box there are some productions s VM on it.

Sounds like you'll have no choice, but to power cycle the host. I recommend you contact vmware support befor taking this action. You can also prepare a scenario of recovery before taking any action.

I am familiar with your SAN provider, but are there indications of errors on the SAN?

  • ESXi 5.5u1 - serial number physical host in virtual machine

I was happy to see in 5.5 update 1 release notes that it should be possible to switch the serial number of the host through a virtual machine hardware.

    • Allow virtual machines to display the serial number of the physical host
Virtual machines cannot reflect the physical hosts ESXi serial numbers.
      • This issue is fixed in this version.

Does anyone know how to enable this for a new or existing virtual computer?

I had problems in the past with Apple Push Notification Services expects a Mac serial number. I hope that I can now spend series a Mac Pro to the host through a virtual machine.

Someone at - it experience or knowledge to implement this? Thank you!

Hi DJLambertand welcome to the VMware communities!

If you want a prompt of OS X to use the serial number of the host, you will need to add this option to the virtual machine configuration:

    serialNumber.reflectHost = 'TRUE '.

or, if you want a prompt of OS X to use the model of host hardware ID (learn "MacPro5, 1"), ID (i.e. "Mac-12345678" ") and the serial number all all aboard:

    smbios.reflectHost = 'TRUE '.

will take care of all three.  Note that there is no way to understand or control what happens if you have multiple virtual machines with the same serial number and using this external serial number as an identifier.

Let us know if you have problems with these options!  I'm not sure whether they will solve the problem you face, but... For example, there are more problems iMessage running in a virtual machine...

    See you soon,.

  • Script to import virtual machines from data warehouses

Is there a quick way to import all of the virtual machines on a data store in a vCenter?  A kind of browse VMX files and import?

More to the point.  I have the only store of data that has been moved to a new location with approximately 100 VM on it.  I want to import all the virtual machines on this unique to a single host data store to the new location.

    Thank you

    Boston Tech Guy

You can specify the name of this 1 data store in the variable $Datastores .

And if you change this line

    $ESXHost= Get-Cluster$Cluster| Get-VMHost|select-First1

    in

    $ESXHost=Get-VMHost -Name MyEsx

    It should do the trick.

  • IP address on the virtual machine windows endangered endangered after the importation of the data store.

I'm gaving a problem with the IP on windows vm disappear after having mounted the snapshot to restore. Here's what I do.

Mount making LUNS to the esx host area

I have eyebrows outside the data store to find the vm I want to right click and click Import the vmx file.

Imports of the virtual machine and when I start it up I wonder if I've moved or copied the VM. I have tried both moved and copy but when I connect to the virtual machine is missing all its IP info.

Any way to avoid the losting vm sound IP info when I import to the host from a LUN outlet?

    Hello

Installs on the forum of the Virtual Machine and the guest operating system.

The MAC of a virtual computer is based on the UUID/name of the virtual machine so if you are not using a static MAC (one that recognizes VMware) and it will change the IP address might also change if you are using DHCP. So I suggest to use a static MAC in the VM configuration.

Another way is to set up the guest operating system in the virtual machine with a static IP address instead of a DHCP function.

But if you are unable to remove the virtual machine or the copy in the virtual machine, there may be something locking these files would be an another running virtual machine. If you need to find this VM and kill him. In this case, "vmware-cmd - L" and 'vmware-cmd - l' host in question can be useful to find where the 'hidden' VM is running.  Ultimately you can use ' vm-support - x "to find a list of the virtual machines running by how the hypervisor lists. Then use 'vm-support - Z' to suspend the offending virtual machine that should unlock everything.

Yes, the use of these commands is command line.

However, before using these commands determine if you can find the place where life VM incriminated.

    Best regards

  • Connectivity problem of virtual machines the host is rebooted.

We restarted our esxi host and after reboot, we receive questions, with the connectivity of virtual machines hosted on that particular esxi only.

The problem is that some virtual machines communicate on the network and some are not.

There are two hosts in the cluster, if move us the virtual machines on another host, virtual machines are running well.

The host has the same configuration with respect to the physical networking and configuration of virtual networking is concerned.

    ESXi version: 4.1

You mentioned that host network configuration and good host network configuration problem is the same.

Issues appeared after reboot the host, and until the battery has been replaced.

I guess that something is wrong at the physical end itself.

Is that possible, that you can stop the host again and obtain reinstalled network and power it turn it on again and test it.

Because when the battery change is done server is put out of the rack, so I'm assuming that n/w card were not seated correctly. I have faced this kind of problem once and I did the same thing and things worked well for me.

  • Install a VSA on the esxi who already has virtual machine running host

    Hi all

I have install VSA if my esxi has already running virtual machine host, I read some post saying that before the VSA, the esxi Server installation must be clean without any host virtual machine created, is - it true?

    Hello

I already answered you on a previous post.

  • To virtual machines from the host local disk HARD iSCSI - without Vmotion

If my company has been slowly in VMware since the summer. We started with a license to the Foundation, then added some hosts more and matched with a bolt on the license for VC. Now, we ended up finding this iSCSI on another budget and realized... oh yes... VMotion is not a function of VC... it costs more... once again...

Is there a way to copy on a host virtual machine machines local hard disks to iSCSI?... must not be direct... just so that if a host dies it does not take down 5-6 VM with it.

As you have a license for the best average VC to do this is to turn off the host, right-click on it and select Migrate.  As long as the host can see little space on the iSCSI device, you will be able to migrate out, cold.

  • movement of virtual machines on new server

I'm fairly new to vmware and operate a very limited plant, but would like assistance.  I have the Essentials package and ESX 4.0 is running on a single server with the virtual machines stored on local hard disks.  I installed a new server ESXi 5.1 and local storage, and I need to move the virtual machines from the old server to the new server.  If it's important, the guest virtual machine operating system are a mixture of linux and windows.  What is the best method to move those VMs?

    Hello

If you have the two host added to vCenter, you can turn off VMs and migrate virtual machines to another host and data store.

Since you do not have a shared storage, you must turn off VM to change host and the data store.

It doesn't matter what OS you are running on a virtual machine.

    Thank you
