In migration node ESX 3.5 VMOTION behavior

Hello

I have ten knots in my main ESX cluster and VMotion is enabled.

I just want to know what exactly the behavior of vmotion if I start to migrate an ESX 3.02 node to 3.5u5?

Is the behavior of vmotion is to migrate all virtual machines on that node to another and after re - import on the node with 3.5?

I can do without stopping my VMs?

THX

Put the host in maintenance mode, this means that the host will not be used until it has been upgraded. as soon as the host is removed from maintenance mode DRS will start migration of virtual machines back. If you have any DRS enabled on your cluster.

  • Migrating from ESX 3.5 to ESXi 4.1

I am planning a migration of ESX 3.5 Uptade 2 to ESXi 4.1 Update 1 in September.  Material welcomes VI environment is in place for renewal of the lease.  I build the new environment vSphere and attach to the same storage shared as the existing ESX VI 3.5.  My plan is the following...

    1. Get and install a new hardware server (C3000 and BL460C G7).
    2. Installing vCenter 4.1 (leave vCenter in demo mode to expose all the features)
    3. Configure the plugin Update Manager vCenter
    4. Install ESXi 4.1 Update 1 on new hosts and add to vCenter 4.1
    5. Configure the new Cluster and configure HA and vMotion. (We are allowed for vSphere 4.1 Standard Edition)
    6. Linking hosts to Update Manager and sanitize with all updates.
    7. Configure virtual networks (host profiles are an option while in demo mode).
    8. Fix new hosts of VMFS existing databases.  (Data banks are VMFS version 3.31)
    9. Disconnect the Virtual Center 2.5 3.5 ESX host and add them to the new vCenter 4.1.
    10. Cold migrate VM ESX 3.5 hosts ESXi 4.1 bed and breakfast hosts
    11. Upgrade VMware tools on all guests.
    12. Upgrade all the guests computer virtual from version 4 to version 7.
    13. Detach the ESX host 3.5 since VMFS data warehouses.
    14. Remove the ESX 3.5 hosts vCenter 4.1
    15. Install all keys in license vSphere 4.1 (vSphere Standard Edition)
    16. Start the VM guests.
    17. Close and dismantle the old ESX 3.5 hosts.

Any feedback is most appreciated.  Please let me know if I'm missing something.

Then, you'd weigh your losses.  Do you have the characteristics of the hardware virtual v7 for these virtual machines or can you live with material v4?  Personally, I needed the changed block tracking which requires hardware v7.  It really comes down to what you need.  I recommend bringing them up to v7 but that's just my opinion.

  • Migrating to ESX 4.1 options and VC

I'm about to start our migration to ESX 4.1 and I was wondering what might be the best way to do it.  I was looking at the compatibility matrix and I see that vCenter 4.0 U2 can support ESX 4.1 boxes but vCetner 4.1 can only support ESX 4.1 boxes not 4.0.

Current config is a box of hardware running vCenter 4.0 U1, but the hardware does not support 64-bit OS, so I'll build a VM to run our new VC that can handle a 64 bit OS.  Can I put them side by side, obviously different name and pointing to a new database.

Its more a matter of opinion, should I do my vCenter 4.0 U2 and perform the migration and then once all my 4.0 hosts are converted to 4.1 and then move the VC up to 4.1 or should I get the new built VC and then simply move hosts I will?  In my mind, I'd rather have a VC manage all my hosts and not them distributed between two servers vCenter.

    Thoughts?

    Hey... summer he does that!

Sorry read the backwards compatibility matrix.  Makes it easy and not our material can not support 64-bit OS (running on 32-bit 4.0u1).  I don't really like about the history / performance data and I have heard of from 4.0 to 41 DB upgrade problems.  I'll just build on a virtual machine running 2003 x 64 and use it to run vCenter 4.1 and then migrate our 4.0 hosts on that.

If you must rebuild the host to vCenter operating system, and if you have the OS, a better host operating system might be 2008 R2?  Just my personal preference, the 2003, x 64 is supported.

  • Migrating to ESX 4, old 3.5 vmotion guests?

We are slowly moving to ESX 4.  We have vcenter 4.0 installed, host to manage our esx 3.5.  We have added two ESX 4 hosts and begin some tests.  I found that vmotion works very well for the machines created from our original designs to the esx host 4.  However, when I make an existing virtual machine to a host of 3.5, update the tools and equipment of the virtual machine, I cannot vmotion between the two ESX 4 hosts.  I have hidden and exposed the NX/XD flag, nothing helps.

Also has anyone seen this behavior?  I have attached the error processor

  • SAN + ESX 4.1 vMotion = Trouble?

Hi people, we just learned that ESX 4.1 is hammering our SAN when it runs vMotions (4 simultaneous VM) to place a host in maintenance mode.

We tried the hack to change the amount of virtual machines to migrate at a time:

    http://virtualizationreview.com/blogs/virtual-Insider/2011/04/limit-concurrent-vMotions-in-vSphere-4-1.aspx

Unfortunately, this does not work and even if it did, it is not advisable.

We watched in SIOC, from what we understand, this can strangle the guest OS IOPS / s, it will activate only when latency hits the threshold and could possibly slow down a virtual computer down which has a drive busy during a vMotion where the data store becomes congested?

What we would like to know is: are we able to strangle the OPS are / s for a single store of data/LUN or host/HBA/path?

We actually started looking into advanced options, these are undocumented, and nobody seems to know/confirm that in fact most of the options are for!

This sounds like it should be a TSR of opening with VMware, instead of solving the unsupported configuration values, like vMotion shouldn't be taxing your San or the table.

  • Migrating to ESX ESXi machine

    Hello

New to ESX, I was handed a task and I hope you can help me with.

I was prompted to install a new server on a segment closed my business network. Asked me if the server can be virtual, as it is expected that the server should be migrated to the ESX infrastructure large company sometime next year.

The server is an older Dell PowerEdge R300, 2 * Xeon 3 GHz, 2 GB Ram, 160 GB. Should support ESXi.

My plan initial isto install ESXi on the server and install the single virtual server from W2K3 on the box. Then, next year, migrate this virtual W2K3 Server unique to my companys ESX 4.0 environment.

Unfortunantly, I'm not able to install directly on the ESX infrastructure of society, and the server must be installed with due next week.

Currently, the network closed, I'm to install the virtual server only consists of 2 clients and a server.

In your opinion, is it worth the time install ESXi on my Dell, with the sole purpose to be able to more easily migrate the unique virtual W2K3 for ESX Server later? Is it still possible? Or is that what I should just install the server with W2K3, forget to ESXi and want to migrate the server ESX using VCenter Converter?

    Any contribution is appreciated.

    Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the community

    check on the page HCL,

2 GB of RAM is not RAM a lot, how much you want to assign to the VM?

Yes, it is possible to spend your stand-alone host to your ESX VM infra.  First of all check if what will be installed on that VM is taken in charge on the virtual machine, not the vendor supports their applications on virtual machine

  • problems migrating from esx 3.5 to esxi 4.1

    Hello everyone,

Migrate a virtual machine by host ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.1 host.
    No error message or anything.
I turn on the virtual machine and it gives error "... the file specified is not a virtual disk' to refer to the vmdk.
In the control settings and see that the drive is properly configured.
The control data store and I see that the file is there.
I move the virtual computer on the old host, to verify that nothing has damaged and magically continues without problems!
I still move VM on the host 4.1 and gives me the same error.
Past to comb through the newspaper, join, it seems that there is an inconsistency between the size of the disk and the size declared in descriptor.
    How is the 3.5 function?
I insist on the fact that all other virtual machines, I moved the host esx 3.5 have absolutely no problem...
    any suggestion is welcome.

You are welcome. Please keep us updated on how it goes.

    Good luck.

    P. S.

A great advantage to the use of converter is that it leaves the original in place. Assuming that it always works, you have as your backup in the case where it is wrong the first time. If you try power off and things will not try to convert the power on the machine. Install Conveter directly on the machine to duplicate.

  • Using the converter to migrate from ESX 3.0.1 to 4.0 U1 replace NIC

    Hello

I'm moving some VMS ESX 3.0.1 stand-alone has a new cluster of ESX 4.0 Update 1.

The migration is successful, but I can't find the right order of things, so that the NETWORK card is not replaced during the conversion.

I have shut down the virtual machine and choose to import as a former ESX virtual machine to the new ESX.

    Then, I tried several methods:

-Convert and keep revision 4 material

-Convert and edit the review of material 7 during conversion

-Convert and edit the review of material 7 and upgrading VMware Tools during conversion

I know that VMware tools must be upgraded before upgrading the virtual hardware, so maybe it's why this last two options does not work.

After I've converted virtual machine and stayed at revision 4 of hardvare, the virtual machine still had a new NETWORK card when starts for the first time.

How can I make the right way and keep the NETWORK map with all the settings intact during the conversion?

    Thanks in advance!

With the converter, you can create a new virtual machine with a new MAC address, why Windows (and Linux with udev) guest operating system will create a new vNIC.

You can try to save your configuration with netsh and restore it later.

  • The VM boot order - Cluster Node ESX Ent 2

We have a 3.5 ESX cluster node using a VIM server to manage 2. When the power died on both nodes, we noticed that the VIM Server came not upward. We thought he was placed to be the first to start on the ESX host, sure it was, but DRS can be moved at some point. Is there a setting that we can use to ensure that the VIM server is the first to pull up after a major power failure?

    Thank you

    Here is the answer

The start of the VM and stop (Autostart) feature is disabled for all virtual machines that reside on hosts that are in (or moved in) a VMware HA cluster

  • ESX 4.0 vmotion broken (on some virtual, not all computers)-not sure when and why

    Hi all

For a while now, I get the following error message when you try to vmotion, several of my virtual machines:

"CPU host is incompatible with the requirements of the virtual machine to CPUID level 0 x 1 'ecx' register."

    Bits of the host: 0000:0000:0000:1000:0010:0000:0001

    Required: 1000:0000:0000:100 x: xxx0:0x1x:xxx0:x 001

    Inconsistency detected for these features:

    * General incompatibilities; see article 1993 possible solutions. "

Now, the thing is... all my hosts are identical in terms of CPU.  They were fortunately short vmotion for the last year and a half under ESX 3.5, and these same hosts can vmotion other virtual machines.  These same VMs were vmotioned in the past.  I'm sure they also vmotioned on ESX4 so in the past (to make updates through Update Manager after the 4.0 update).

VMware tools are up to date.

    What gives any idea?

  • Ports required to migrate between ESXs models in different areas of FW

    Hello

I have an ESX in Location1 hosting models. I have another group of ESX in Loacation2. I want to deploy an an ESX virtual computer in guest place.2 from a model of Location1.

We have a firewall located between 1 location and location two. ESX on the two Sites is managed by a server on Location1 vCentre.

The firewall has already 902,903,443,27010 and 27000 open between vCentre server and the LAN of guests place.2. However we can not yet deploy vms in lcoation2 of the models of location1.

I read something that was rather vague on the opening of the port 902 between ESX on different areas of FW. Can anyone confirm if it's it's it stop working. I have to open 902 Port TCP and UDP between two LANs in both sense? Also is there anything else that needs opening between them. We do not HA, DRS and vMotion to present as all virtual machines are the local storage.
