A new license purchase to migrate from ESX 3.5 to ESXi 4.1?

Hello

I have an existing installation of ESX 3.5 and I need to rebuild and install ESXi 4.1. The license I already bought for ESX 3.5 still works for ESXi 4.1, or he will have to buy a new license? Thank you

If you have SnS on VI3 license, you will have a license vSphere4 key.  Check your licensing Portal

  • Migrating from ESX 3.5 to ESXi 4.1

I am planning a migration of ESX 3.5 Uptade 2 to ESXi 4.1 Update 1 in September.  Material welcomes VI environment is in place for renewal of the lease.  I build the new environment vSphere and attach to the same storage shared as the existing ESX VI 3.5.  My plan is the following...

    1. Get and install a new hardware server (C3000 and BL460C G7).
    2. Installing vCenter 4.1 (leave vCenter in demo mode to expose all the features)
    3. Configure the plugin Update Manager vCenter
    4. Install ESXi 4.1 Update 1 on new hosts and add to vCenter 4.1
    5. Configure the new Cluster and configure HA and vMotion. (We are allowed for vSphere 4.1 Standard Edition)
    6. Linking hosts to Update Manager and sanitize with all updates.
    7. Configure virtual networks (host profiles are an option while in demo mode).
    8. Fix new hosts of VMFS existing databases.  (Data banks are VMFS version 3.31)
    9. Disconnect the Virtual Center 2.5 3.5 ESX host and add them to the new vCenter 4.1.
    10. Cold migrate VM ESX 3.5 hosts ESXi 4.1 bed and breakfast hosts
    11. Upgrade VMware tools on all guests.
    12. Upgrade all the guests computer virtual from version 4 to version 7.
    13. Detach the ESX host 3.5 since VMFS data warehouses.
    14. Remove the ESX 3.5 hosts vCenter 4.1
    15. Install all keys in license vSphere 4.1 (vSphere Standard Edition)
    16. Start the VM guests.
    17. Close and dismantle the old ESX 3.5 hosts.

Any feedback is most appreciated.  Please let me know if I'm missing something.

Then, you'd weigh your losses.  Do you have the characteristics of the hardware virtual v7 for these virtual machines or can you live with material v4?  Personally, I needed the changed block tracking which requires hardware v7.  It really comes down to what you need.  I recommend bringing them up to v7 but that's just my opinion.

  • problems migrating from esx 3.5 to esxi 4.1

    Hello everyone,

Migrate a virtual machine by host ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.1 host.
    No error message or anything.
I turn on the virtual machine and it gives error "... the file specified is not a virtual disk' to refer to the vmdk.
In the control settings and see that the drive is properly configured.
The control data store and I see that the file is there.
I move the virtual computer on the old host, to verify that nothing has damaged and magically continues without problems!
I still move VM on the host 4.1 and gives me the same error.
Past to comb through the newspaper, join, it seems that there is an inconsistency between the size of the disk and the size declared in descriptor.
    How is the 3.5 function?
I insist on the fact that all other virtual machines, I moved the host esx 3.5 have absolutely no problem...
    any suggestion is welcome.

You are welcome. Please keep us updated on how it goes.

    Good luck.

A great advantage to the use of converter is that it leaves the original in place. Assuming that it always works, you have as your backup in the case where it is wrong the first time. If you try power off and things will not try to convert the power on the machine. Install Conveter directly on the machine to duplicate.

  • Migrate from ESX 4.0 to ESXi

Hi, I have a 4.0 ESX Server I want to convert it to ESXi (other hosts of the Organization will be ESXi). I know I have to do a complete reinstall, but I'm not sure if the ESX license will be valid for ESXi. Can someone advise?

    Thanks in advance,

    Brian

    Hi Brian,.

Your 'normal' license is valid for ESXi.  Your ESXi will win all the features included in your vSphere license.

  • VMs migration from one to another on ESXi 5.1 data store (free license)

I'm under ESXi in my lab (for the Cisco voice servers and a few Windows virtual machines). Virtual machines are on a datastore iSCSI hosted by a Netgear ReadyNAS Pro Business. Due to major problems with iSCSI on the ReadyNAS platform and the inability of Netgear to resolve problems (blocking NAS requiring a hard reset), I decided to buy a QNAP TS - 569 L and use it to host my ESXi data store. Now, I'm migrating my VMs from the iSCSI data store hosted on the ReadyNAS to the iSCSI data store hosted by QNAP.

My VMs are supplied thin, and I want to preserve thin provisioning after migration. The data store Navigator ESXi can move (or copy) machines virtual data to another store, but thin-set in service virtual machines become thick-set service once they have been moved (or copied). Somebody advised Veeam to that end, I've installed and configured. Unfortunately, Veeam-error with the message that the current license does not have the migration of virtual machines from a data store to another. Just today, I learned that he must have at least the ESXi Essentials ($500) license to allow this type of migration of Veeam.

I also tried OVFTool (the MMware command line utility), using the following syntax:

    . / ovftool - ds QNAP-iSCSI - dm = vi thin: / / vi [email protected]/CUCM-Pub: / / [email protected]

    where:

QNAP-iSCSI is the name of the data store on the QNAP

192.168.200.10 is the IP address of my box of ESXi that is connected to two data stores iSCSI (the one organized by the ReadyNAS and the other by the QNAP).

CUCM-Pub is the name of the virtual machine on the ReadyNAS iSCSI data store I'm migrating to the QNAP iSCSI data store.

However, I get the following error message:

Error: Unexpected Option: vi: / / [email protected]/CUCM-Pub

This is probably due to the same issue - free ESXi license does not allow this type of VM migration. So, what are my options with free ESXi license? I'm not willing to pay $500 for the license of the essential at this stage.

    Thank you!

A few options, I can think of are:

    • export to the FVO and re - import
    • use VM explore Trilead and backup/restore virtual machines
    • Use the vmkfstools command to copy the virtual disks

  • Migrating from 5.0.0 free ESXi / ESX 4.1.0 a local database to bought ESXi 4.1.0 with SAN

We currently have four host servers.  Two host servers are the free version of VMware ESXi 5.0.0 and ESX 4.1.0.  I have two hosts in a cluster, obviously with the version under license and running VMWare VCenter ESXi 4.1.0 running.

All of these guests have all (vmdk files etc.) data stored locally on the host servers.  I'll be migrating to a new SAN and buy under license of VMware.

I need to move the virtual hosts free version VMware servers (5.0.0 ESXi / ESX 4.1.0) to the cluster host ESXi 4.1.0 under license.  I can export the folder containing all the files and import it on the cluster license.  Once records are there, how can I activate the servers of records and pull up?

I have to get off these hosts old existing virtual servers on the new servers which we you place your order.

In this case I the new environment configuration and then for example use VMware Converter to migrate (V2V, with the virtual machine is turned off) the virtual machine of the former hosts in the vCenter Server environment allowing you to select the target storage.

  • Using the converter to migrate from ESX 3.0.1 to 4.0 U1 replace NIC

    Hello

I'm moving some VMS ESX 3.0.1 stand-alone has a new cluster of ESX 4.0 Update 1.

The migration is successful, but I can't find the right order of things, so that the NETWORK card is not replaced during the conversion.

I have shut down the virtual machine and choose to import as a former ESX virtual machine to the new ESX.

    Then, I tried several methods:

-Convert and keep revision 4 material

-Convert and edit the review of material 7 during conversion

-Convert and edit the review of material 7 and upgrading VMware Tools during conversion

I know that VMware tools must be upgraded before upgrading the virtual hardware, so maybe it's why this last two options does not work.

After I've converted virtual machine and stayed at revision 4 of hardvare, the virtual machine still had a new NETWORK card when starts for the first time.

How can I make the right way and keep the NETWORK map with all the settings intact during the conversion?

    Thanks in advance!

With the converter, you can create a new virtual machine with a new MAC address, why Windows (and Linux with udev) guest operating system will create a new vNIC.

You can try to save your configuration with netsh and restore it later.

What is ESXi system managed (for example with a non-free full license) by your vCenter?  If this isn't the case, then you can not make a gesture like this.  You can probably fake it with enough script and help of some external tools to make disk copy.

  • Can switch you from ESX 3.5 and ESXi 4.0?

We have a host in a remote location running 3.5U4 managed by a VC server in our data center.  We would like to upgrade to ESXi 4.0.  There is only the local drive and we anticipate using our VC to manage this host more, we just intend to use the vSphere client.

So can we close the virtual machine 1, which currently sits on the host and do an upgrade?

Or should I back up the virtual machine, do a clean install and then restore a virtual hardware and virtual machine / upgrade tools?

    Kind regards...

  • ESX 4.0 to ESXi migration

I just want to confirm this. Can migrate us from ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 via the Update Manager? If so, any supporting documentation?

    Thank you

Can migrate us from ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 via the Update Manager?

No, there is no way to upgrade ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1. However. According to the vSphere 5 Upgrade Guide (see http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-pubs.html) an ESX/ESXi 4.x upgrade to ESXi 5.0 is supported (as long as 4.x installation is not an upgrade from 3.x)

  • migration of VM cold from ESX 3.5 to 4.0 with old to new hardware

HI, we currently have some s IBM X 440 (Intel Foster, think Pentium 4s) we are looking for plans to migrate to esx 4.0 and with this, it seems that we need a major hardware upgrade.

While we are looking at is some Intel Xeon X 3323 machine like some DELL T100 or T30 or some of the new stuff with E5504 (Nehalem) server as some IBM system x 3400 M2-based.

So, I would like to know if there are any additional steps I should do prior to a cold migration (assuming you cannot vMotion between the two hot), with the new system added to the farm. Or is it simply impossible and we need to recreate the images from scratch?

We would like to make two plans is to use the migration within the farm tool or a cluster or w/e they call it now and the other one is when it breaks and we do something more complicated.

    It would be like:

    (1) add new machine of the same farm with add-on host in the VI client

    (2) migrate virtual machines more with the migration tool.

Or if this fails due to network problems, you can:

    (1) use vmkfstools-i to move the virtual disks to a space of EXT3

2 (a) use console / ubuntu live CD to mount a USB key and move the virtual disks to the new machine

SCP use 2B) to do the same as above

    (3) to recreate the VMX file to the new machine

Here are the General steps (spreading things like VMs off, or update tools and etc.), and I was wondering if they would at least work or any who tried such migration between old and new materials.

    Thank you

Ok. Since you have not vCenter, you can turn off the virtual machines and just copy the VM via SCP.

After this opening Datastore Borwser in VI client, find the .vmx file, right-click on it, "add to the inventory.
