  Follow the steps below to set the black ink only.

  1. open the printing preferences (step 1)

  2. click on the Advanced button (step 2)

  3. click on the drop down arrow next to the print in grayscale to change black ink only.

  Yes, I know you are trying to scan. Did you follow my instructions? I was able to record successfully a file scanned to PDF on my updated Samsung Galaxy Tablet. Again, please follow the steps listed below:

  1. open your HP all in one Application

  2. click on the Scan option

  3. analyse the desired file

  4. you will notice it auto saves in jpeg format, click now in the top corner right on the settings option

  5. now, click and save the file in pdf format

  6. now gives you the ability to rename the scan

  I just tried to install my deskjet 3820 on my pc windows 7. Followed the instructions to install other drivers but printer a few prints in black and white. Even though the printer was unsued and unopened in the attic for several years, my other printer broke so I tried using it.   Generally, these lines are caused by the print settings.  If you have not selected in the printer preferences option when printing correct paper type, the unit will not use the right time for the cycles of the printhead on the entire page.  If the drytime is not correct, then the movement of the print head generates lines seen in this image.

  You have the full features software installed on your computer for this printer?

  What is the operating system of the computer you're using?

  For a print quality problems that I would recommend following the steps described in the document link below which will discuss with print settings that are appropriate for the job at hand.  I would advise using parameters such as: HP Photo Plus or the correct selection of the photo, correct paper size paper for work of the image and the best print quality.

  I'm afraid your printer is too old and is not compatible with Windows 8, so there is no workaround solution that can allow the use of the printer.

  Depending on your printer specificationsand user guide, sweeping glass maximum size is 21.6 x 29.7 cm (8.5 x 11.7 inches). Whereas legal Documents is 21,59 x 35.56 cm (8.5 x 14 inches).  This printer is designed for the digitization of paper ordinary size 8.5 x 11 only.

  There are no drivers HP but I found the driver of HP Deskjet F2100 series from the Apple site that hopefully, will work for you. It's a fairly large download.

  Printer HP v.2.16.1 for OS X drivers.

  It is a list of available printers that are supported.

  OS X: printer and scanner software available for download.
