Install ESXi 5 on a usb flash drive

Guys,

What is the minimum space required when you install ESXi 5 on a USB?

Kind regards.

Hello

I came across this time, since it doesn't seem to be documented nowhere in official documents, not in the knowledge base and not in vSphere Guides 5.

But if you run the installation you will be asked to "Select a disk that has a capacity of more than 910 MiB".

So, this would be the answer I guess

Windows 7 does not support installation on external storage such as a USB Flash drive devices. ... what I do pay attention on the ESXi host to maximize the life of the USB? Maybe switch logs in a data store, if possible?

VMware optimizes access R/W if you install ESXi on a flash or SD drive. If I'm not mistaken, some changes are written only once in an hour. Depending on the size of the flash player, you can configure the location of the scratch partition (which is used for discharges of support etc.) to be on one of your data warehouses (HARD drive)

Someone at - it information on how long will last my with ESXi USB flash drive?

This depends mainly on the quality of the drive itself. Some providers (like Dell) offer models of server with two type of a RAID1 SD cards.

  • p6710f, crashes at startup when installing 2 Cruzer of Sandisk USB flash drives

    Hello

Question: My HP p6710f desktop computer crashes at startup when 2 Sandisk Cruzer USB drive (8 GB/FAT32, a 16 GB/FAT32) is installed in a hub Targus USB2 multiport (connected to the back USB port of p6710f).

With USB flash drives installed, from a market boot: Boot past the BIOS (blue) screens, then 'underline' cursor blinks just on the black screen and hangs.  It does not start a Win7 from the hard drive.

With USB flash drives installed, from a bunch of market: If in the (blue) BIOS screen, I hit the ESC and select the hard disk device (which is the top of the "boot device") then boot proceeds normally and boots Win7 from the hard drive.

If I do the trunk with the key removed USB, the boot process proceeds normally and starts Win7 disk.

I have flashed to the latest ROM system from the support page of p6710f.  Who really seemed to solve the problem for a while, but the hook finally reappeared.

I copied all the data on USB flash drives, formatted their 'rapid' and copied all the data back.  No joy.

Here is a link to the Sandisk Cruzers.  I deleted all the files on U3/etc. out of them, I want all of the space available on them for auxiliary data storage, I can't boot from them:

  • Another corrupt ESXi USB flash drive

I have a USB flash drive as boot ESXi disk get corrupted, I thought it was a fluke, so I threw away the USB key and reinstalled ESXi on a new USB flash drive. Well, after a little more than a year, this flash drive has been corrupted as well as ESXi follow the start-up procedure.

Are consumers just don't required to act as a start-up for ESXi readers forever on the servers of USB flash drives? My actual VMs are on the hard disks on the server so I guess that the USB flash drive was not getting a lot of work too far than go of reads/writes. I know major integrators offer ESXi built in running off some flash internal drive so I assumed that flash was reliable. What is the difference between these types of enterprise flash drives and consumer flash drives? Or it is just a risk for all flash drives and it is preferable to install ESXi for one SSD or HARD drive?

I always suggest installing ESXi on a flash drive of business as sellers to test these players for the highest reliability and performance while consumer flash drives are not tested.

  • How to install Windows XP using USB Flash Drive in Windows 7?

I m windows 7 and want to install windows xp, how to install windows xp using a usb flash drive. I have the iso file from xp.

    Hello

The Microsoft Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool is designed for the installation of Windows 7, is not for the installation of XP.

I suggest that you use Google that Microsoft does not support what you want to do.

    Yes, you can.

the file .iso image from Microsoft for the USB/DVD tool allows you to create a bootable DVD or USB (requires a blank DVD or USB flash to at least 4 GB key).

Will this work? The laptop will use the Windows CD in the drive of the laptop to load the operating system?
    How to make this connection?

    Hello

You usually have an external USB CD/DVD drive to boot from the Windows XP disc or the Toshiba recovery disc.

But there is a method that allows you to install Win XP using the 2 GB USB key.
This is possible because the NB100 BIOS supports booting from USB key.

    Pease check this Web page:

  • Does anyone has installed ESX 3.5 on a USB Flash drive?

    Hello

I read some comments on how to get ESXi on a USB Flash drive, but I wonder if the same thing is possible with ESX 3.5?  The reason why I ask is that many of our ESX servers are wired directly into our DS/4700 IBM SAN for their data warehouses and we currently have local disks for the operating system itself.  Cost-mindedly, it would be wonderful if we can just install ESX operating system on a flash drive $15 (which would never be deleted you mind) as opposed to hard drives IBM overpriced or the boot-from-SAN.  The thought of having an identical set also to go with our identical to our disaster recovery site hardware is also very attractive. If someone could provide an answer on this, I would be very grateful.  Thank you!

    -John

If you ask if it is possible, yes it's possible.  Incorporated just means it is preinstalled on removable media (usually a flash drive, but it's the same thing).

With regard to the instructions, google it.  There are a LOT of messages.

  • How to recover from the failure of a with ESXi USB flash drive?

I have ESXi 5.5 running on a 16 GB USB flash drive.  The system itself has a RAID card and drives mirrored where all virtual machines are stored, so it seems to me that a critical point of weakness is the drive itself.  If die ESXi itself running flash player, is there a procedure to recover the virtual machines on the disks?  Or should I keep a backup of my drive as well?

    1. How to restore the operating system assuming that the flash drive fails? If I reinstalled ESXi on a new drive of the same thumb, would see the VMware VMs existing on the hard drives of the server? Or is the process of discovery of the relatively painless existing virtual machines?

If your flash drive goes down, will not be a problem that you have your virtual machines without danger on the separate data store in the locally attached storage drives. all you got to do is to reinstall ESXi host, he will be happy to see the existing VMFS data store and browse this data store where are stored the re-save you and virtual machines in the inventory.

See also changes following KB to make the backup of your ESXi as operating system configuration and when you change the configuration at the time of the failure of ESXi, you don't have to worry about re-configuarting it

VMware KB: Backup and restore configuration using the vSphere command-line Interface and vSphere PowerCLI ESXi

    1. How can I maintain redundancy for my USB failure? Can I have two drives connected and automatically backup flash / mirror the first hard drive to the second?

This is not possible (I never tried myself) If you use an external flash drive, but let's say that you have any material to the specific provider giving this feature as

    DELL IDSDM http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/poweredge-idsdm-whitepaper-en.pdf

or another supplier giving a similar feature, then it is quite possible to mirror. Otherwise, the best option is take config. backup using KB, I mentioned in the first answer.

  • do not install USB flash drive

Hello, my usb flash drive is read as ipod to computer and can access the contents of the disc.

    Hello

The issue seems to be with the AutoPlay settings. AutoPlay starts playback of a disc as soon as you insert media in the drive. As a result, the Setup file of programs and the music on audio media start immediately. If in automatic execution, the device is configured to be detected as media device it will detect your IPod USB flash drive.

I suggest to fix the AutoPlay parameter by downloading the file below and check the results: AutoPlay Repair Wizard: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=C680A7B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en

  • HP Elitedesk 800 G2 SFF: external hard drive not detected in the BIOS. Only USB Flash drives are detected.

    Hi all

I received recently 2 new HP desktop computers.

    HP Elitedesk 800 G2 SFF

    HP Elitedesk 800 G2 TWR

The goal is to test our real W7 x 64 image on these machines and to inject the missing drivers in the image.

MDT 2010 to create a deployment on a USB hard disk drive.

This disc of deployment is already used on 16 different models of HP in the company (Elitebook, zBook, EliteDesk) to install our image so I know it works.

Unfortunately, the two HP Elitedesk 800 G2, I can't start the boot disk but I cannot to USB for a USB key.

The USB drive is not detected and not proposed in the BIOS Menu of STARTUP.

Only the internal HD, external USB Flash Disk, DVD and network devices are detected.

Here's what I already checked or tried:

    • Latest Version of the BIOS installed (2.05)
    • UEFI Boot has been disabled. (not supported by our record of deployment)
    • USB ports are enabled (front and rear).
    • All types of USB devices are allowed in the BIOS
    • The start command has been changed to start with USB devices.
    • Legacy support is active and Secure Boot disabled
    • Delete the keys to secure boot
    • Reset secure by default startup keys
    • This morning, I created a new disk deployment on a USB Flash drive and it works!

So, it seems that only Flash USB drives are detected.

I know it is possible to return the flag removalble on a USB device to cheat the system and make it appear as a disk fixed, but I want a simple solution.

Does anyone know a fix or a workaround for this problem?

    Thanks in advance!

For those interested in the answer, here's the final results.

It turns out that the hard 500 GB external drive can be detected if it is fomatted in FAT32.

It's strange because my 16 GB USB Flash drive formatted in NTFS works very well.

In any case, I'll create a FAT32 Partition to the Boot MDT files and put my picture (because the file is too big for FAT32 partition) on the secondary partition (formatted as NTFS).

Thanks to the technical pre-sales team of HP who helped me with this!
