Install ESXi on a USB key Dell Power Edge T310 5.0

I would like to know if anyone has tried to install ESXi 5.0 on a USB key with Dell T310? Advantages and disadvantages?

The system is not for production only for the test, I would save some costs and only get 2 hard drives to store data

Thank you!

Daniel.

Yes it has an internal USB slots (2) and Dell Power Edge T310 is the HCL just check your CPU

People had a lot of problems installing ESXi4 on boxes, but it is associated with RAID controller driver.

This should be included and sorted on ESXi 5: see http://communities.vmware.com/thread/243513?start=15&tstart=0

I use a HP Microserver with ESXi 5 fortunately boot from USB

Please allow points if it is useful/correct

Added the: you can download the Installable ISO from Dell on specific ESXi from the Dell site

SBUU what version do you use?  You should use GDPS (systems management tools and Documentation) 7.2 or later version, not SBUU.  Have you tried to install directly from the Windows support?  What is the EXACT message that you receive?  Note that the eccentric the 2970 chipset will probably require allows you to load the driver during installation if you are using a CD/DVD drive.  Installation of USB will avoid this scenario.

  • Install ESXi 4.1u1 USB to USB

I have a N36L HP Proliant Microserver, on which I want to install ESXi 4.1u1. The material has no optical drive, but it has an internal USB that can host a flash drive. I want to install on a 1 GB stick plugged into it. It is two a question on how to do this, but also what I've discovered so far.

    (1) my first attempt was to create a portable USB HD bootable with ISO. It is documented in various places, the easiest of which is to use UNetbootin. Although apparently, it worked in previous versions of ESXi, apparently this does not work in 4.0 + since the installer insists on finding an image on an optical disc instead of the bootable media.

    (2) the workaround for this is to use a kickstart file to call 'usb install', which has the secondary effect of automation of the installation too. However calling "autopart' with the name of the flash drive fails also in my case because scripted installs need to 5 GB of space on the target disk. My stick is 1 GB.

    My remaining options are:

    (1) use another VM (possibly?) with an optical drive to install on a USB thumb key and then plug it into the server. Would this work? Is there only one image for all types of hardware, or installing regular CDROM EXSi when thing custom installed on a specific material does something?

    (2) use a "image writer" (winimage/dd) to write the installation image to ISO directly on the USB. To do this, I have the same questions as above. The images fit everything?

    3) temporarily renounce this strategy and use a cdrom or install it on a hard drive instead.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Option 1) would do. A base image would work different across of the box. You will find another server or using vmware workstation to create your bootable USB on esxi.  You can follow the tutorial here simply replace these virtual CD ISO of vmware workstation. http://www.techhead.co.UK/installing-VMWare-ESXi-4-0-on-a-USB-memory-stick-the-official-way

  • My concerns about installing ESXi on a USB Flash Disk

    Hello!

There was a lot of messages about installing esxi hypervisor on a usb flash drive, what I've done and I think it's ok because there's no need to waste expensive disks for installation of a very light bone

But I have a few questions and concerns in this regard. appreciate your answers.

1 - first of all I can't find my DL380 G7 Server internal usb. can someone give me a link or a picture where he is exactly?

2 - Suppose that after boot completely the host, something happens on the usb drive. If nothing happens? I think there should be nothing to worry about, because the hypervisor has been loaded into the memory of the server. Am I wrong?

3 - my concern is to have backup and the ability to restore that very quickly. some time in the past I had a single esxi host. I used powercli and commands appropriate for configuration backup host (I think that the command was something like esx-cfgbackup or like that).

so if the flash has been corrupted, I would replace it with another and restored the settings that

but now I host 4 esxi and vcenter. should I worry about this? How should I have backup? I know that SQL backup database of vcenter and its certificate is sufficient to have a backup of the settings of vcenter but on those who are just to vcenter and which are on the host? just want to say, what should I do to be able to replace a faulty usb disk (esxi is on it) with a new and all get back to work as it was?

Sorry if the questions are easy to answer. I'm just a beginner

and sorry for my bad English

Assuming that I don't have the license for the host profiles, what should I do?

It depends on the complexity of the configuration of the host. You can back up the configuration of the individual hosts or just reconfigure reinstalled once. In a larger environment, you'd probably for example the hosts scripted installation.

Because the server vCenter Server usually runs as a virtual machine, it is a good idea to do an image based backup (using backup vDR or 3 rd-party applications), and - in the case where you use a dedicated SQL Server - certainly back up the database. For the backup and restoration of vCenter Server, you can also take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1023985.

In the rare cases where an SD card fails, you can always vMotion virtual machines to another host and then reinstall the host with a new SD card.

  • Failure installing ESXi 5.1.0 on Dell PowerEdge R210 II

    Hi all

I tried to find my answer in the existing forums and found a similar mistake (Forum #423438), but he had put end to saying that particular server is not supported. I bought the different server, the PE210 II, and he showed up on the list of support for VMWare. If you need of advice please.

It is a new server out of the box, bought without Windows/Linux installed. Get the installation to the point below where it was looking to select a drive... and he just stood there. When I hit F1 for more details, I got the text at the top left of the screenshot. "An unexpected error has occurred. Error code: YMxvZy5we... "Look at the logs for more details. AttributeError: 'Text' object has no attribute 'device'

    vmware error.jpg

No idea how to go beyond this? Really, we want to start using VMware and bought equipment to devote to it. Now I can't make it work.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Unfortunately "S" PERC controllers don't are not supported with ESXi, it may not even be detected during installation at all (see KB VMware: cannot install ESX/ESXi with Dell S class PERC)

  • Cannot install Windows 10 from USB key on the MacBook Pro mid 2015 with OS 10.11.4

I get this Windows error message, after formatting the partition with NTFS BootCamp: "we could not create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information see the installation log files. "I think I have meet the hardware requirements for Windows 10 and defined a 50GB partition - don't know what the problem is.

See map of partition of the disk. There are GUIDS. The drive is probably Master Boot Record.

Even if it is already GUID, I got the same message the first time that I went to install Win 10 on a disc that I knew (and verified) as GUIDS. Win 10 would not install until I've repartitioned the drive completely.

  • Dell power edge T620 configuration RAID and OS install Question

    Hi all

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. My company recently bought a new server Dell T620 and I'm the one assigned to operate. Unfortunately, I do not have to configure a server with a RAID5 configuration.

My question is, I'm following the directions to Dell that says opening the lifecycle controller, select deploy the operating system. Where I'm stuck is to put the virtual disk. It's my first RAID configuration, and I think that the VD is what windows uses to read total disk space? We run 3 - 1 TB NLS 6.0gbps 7.2 k RPM.

I know 1 TB HARD drive to shows only 930 GB in windows. But for some reason any it offers me a virtual disk up to 1800 GB? I think I need to settle this at least can Go 930?

I can give more details if necessary. But currently, I am stuck on this part and will not go forward unless some.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello acslacker

All you need to do is choose RAID 5, select the 3 disks and accept. It will automatically use all available space.

With discs hard 3x1TB the maximum available space will be approximately 2 TB. Some will disappear in the conversion to binary. It is announced that 930 GB instead of 1 TB. RAID 5 1 HARD drive is used for parity, then you will immediately lose 1 TB. This space will not appear in the usable space. The 1.8 to which it is automatically the list looks correct.

    Thank you

  • Dell Power Edge T110 and T110 II chassis compatibility

What are the differences between the T110 and T110II chassis, or are they the same?
We had a small accident and T110II chassis has been destroyed.
Could install us T110II motherboard to T110 chassis, the façade is compatible (where LEDs and USB)? And etc?
( T110II MB, PSU and HARD drive is fine).

    YasskyLight,

The chassis between the T110 and T110 II should be identical, as is the control panel with LEDs and USB. So you should be able to use the right control panel of the T110 for use with the rest of the T110II.

Let me know if it helps.

  • Dell Power Edge R410 & Dell Perc H700 modular F2WGY

    Hi guys

Need some advice please, a few weeks ago, we bought a Dell R410. This came with a modular 6/ir Perc. However, when we arrived at the installation of drives we noticed that the controller did not recognize disks larger than 2 TB. It's not good because we need to use 2 x 3 and 2 x 500 GB disks in a RAID 1 Configuration.

After Googling autour, I came to the conclusion that the card that it came with the "Perc 6/ir' does not support disks larger than 2 TB.

So, I advanced and bought a new modular a "Dell Perc H700 F2WGY" controller which apparently supports disks more great.

the controller came yesterday so I removed the old Perc 6/ir controller from the slot in the bottom of the map editing and trendy "Dell Perc H700 F2WGY" modular at the same place. : Photo of slot, I inserted H700

    H700 card: see picture

    PERC 6/ir map: see picture

Anyway, once I inserted the card and started, I was presented with the error; "PCIE training error" system HALT.

Obviously this would not start any further. So I brought the wrong card? im confused at the moment between modular and integrated? the pcie slot is low for integrated only cards?

I then add the new map on the PCIE Top slot. the system then started and he could see the card. However, it found no readers?

What exactly I do bad will this card work at all? or I'm out of luck and need another card?

    Cappilio,

The problem you are experiencing is due to the model of the H700. Map H700 modular version is actually designed for the blade server Poweredge series. The model that you would need is the H700i which is the version that is integrated, designed to go into the white storage controller slot you are talking about. The references are KK67X and CNXVV. The latest model of the H700 is the H700A which is the adapter, it's the model that is necessary for installation in a PCIe location.

This link explains in detail in the overview H700 - http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pvaul/en/perc-technical-guidebook.pdf

Let me know if it helps.
