  I used method 2, because I had already tried method 1 earlier, but the "fix it" went wrong. After reading the information from method 2, I opted to use my FireFox instead of IE8 browser, because I suspected that the process Internet Explorer that are included with the update was a large part of the cause of my problem. Among the options, I used Microsoft Download center to locate the update I needed and then through its validation and finally made the download and reboot. Voila!

  I know I'm a little late to this but I have never tried to install SP2 before that never came. I now need to install for a new part and for the life of me I can't make it work.
  I am currently running Windows Vista SP1 32 bit on an Intel E8400 Core2Duo with 4 GB of memory and a lot of HARD drive space.
  I downloaded SP2 and tried to install (downloaded because it has never been available via Windows Update)-all I get is before trying to install anything even really is "an unknown error occurred, error 0x8004100a.
  I then installed system update readiness tool, which is listed as installed successfully. All other updates available had already been installed. I disabled my antivirus and subsequently disabled it and all the other programs startup, restarted, and I still get the same error. I stopped all non-microsoft services and no change.
  For the life of me and with the hours spent searching google, I can not know how else to install this SP2. Are there other things I need to do?

  SP2 was offered through Windows Update? If this isn't the case, then it might suggest that the laptop was not ready.

  Error code 0 x 80070005 usually indicates that you don't have enough privileges or the operation is blocked.   See if your Bootcamp is actually the version 3 (right click - on Bootcamp) I did a system restore because I had just updated those drivers. But if you did when you got your Snow Leopard, you need to uninstall Bootcamp 3.0 in programs and features.  If you remember, when you loaded Windows Vista first you did not load Bootcamp until after installation has been completed.

  So to remove 3.0, restart, then try to install again.  Let us know how it went.

  Well, the main issue is that you cannot use a Dell Windows XP reinstall on one different computer than Dell drive.  You don't have a Dell computer because the motherboard came not from Dell.
