Installation internal SSD drive and storage of documents on external hard drive

Hello!

I have an older iMac and I want to speed it up by installing a SSD drive.  Currently, my internal hard drive has 2 TB of storage, and I don't want to pay for one SSD of this size.  I consider the use of an external drive for my files and using the SSD internal applications and the operating system.  Can this work?  What is the internal SSD of minimum size I should get, more or less, according to my number of apps?   The documents will open at a decent speed?   It is up to me to use an external hard drive with a Firewire instead of USB connection?  Thank you!

Hi Dan:

Apps it really depends how much you use and what types of data you want to keep in vs SSD HARD drive.

120-128 GB SSD: USD price: 60-70 price range.

for 250/256 GB SSD: about USD: price range of 80-90

for 500/512 GB SSD: about USD: price range of 130-150

An external 2 TB drive: for laptop (USB bus-powered - usually 2.5 "HDD included): 90 us $, for the largest 3.5" Office style HDD: 90 USD

For me:

I store all my music on the external network drive (RAID 1 configuration, 2 TB, and 50 percent full this time), all my documents/pictures are still in my 500 GB SSD.

I don't have much video projects on my SSD.

I used about 200 GB in my internal SSD flash drive

Good luck finding your best solution.

How can I manage the preferences that LR do not take up space on my MAC hard drive and works only on the external hard drive?

    Hi amireos,

Yes, you can create your workflow where you can keep all your images on the external hard drive and the Lightroom catalog file as well.

If you start with Lightroom and then use the Destination location as external hard drive when you import your image of the external source such as a camera or SD.

If you already have your Images on the Mac HD drive, then play all your Image on the external hard drive first and then import images directly from there.

Finally, you can change the location of the Lightroom Catalog as well.

Default location: folder on the Mac Drive HD, there is folder called Lightroom that you can move on the external drive too (however catalog Lightroom can't memory space as its only import previews of the images is not the real image and full)

Once you move the file catalog Lightroom external hard disk, then you need to browse the catalog file when you launch Lightroom only once.

See thread: LR catalog moving on external hard drive

Let us know if it helps.

    Kind regards

  • How do I delete photo albums and send them to an external hard drive?

Newbie here and thankful for any help.

I have been scanning a lot of old photos.  I bought a WD My Passport for Mac.  I would like to remove some old albums of photos scanned photos and put them on My Passport.  How to achieve this?  Also, do I buy an external hard drive right or should I format it?  Clerks in Best Buy make it sound so simple... What is the file system of the reader?

Select the icon for the drive in Finder, and then press the combination of keys ⌘I (abbreviation of "file > read information").

The info panel displays the file system in the genres section:

If the file system is not Mac OS extended (journaled) reformat the drive with disk utility before you move all data to it.  Formatting will erase it.

Save your photos on external hard drive, you have two options - just save the INDIVIDUAL photos or save the photo library.

It would be better to copy your photo library on disk. This way you will save the versions published with all the metadata that you added and the original images in the quality is.

If you export photos you need to make your choice, if you want to export the edited versions or the original versions, or both.

    • To save the library, do it just from the pictures on the external drive folder.
    • To save the individual photos, open one of your albums, then select all photos with ⌘A, then use the command "file > export > export... photos ' and select one a high-quality format t the original size. Do this for all the photos. Check if the export went well, before you delete photos from the library.  To remove photos from an album using the ⌘⌫ key combination command + DELETE.

Empty the recently deleted album only after that you convinced yourself that the exported photos are OK and you have a backup.

You can copy and paste the files on your external hard drive.

Right-click your folder of the image and choose copy...

Right-click on the drive letter for your external hard
    drive and choose Paste.

You can also right click on some files or folders and
in the menu... Choose... Send to..., then select the
Letter from the external hard drive.

FWIW... the external hard disk file system
must be NTFS if the files larger than 4 GB will be

  • Installation of SSD drive and the noise of the fan to the MacBook Pro?

    Hello

Just replaced the stock 5400 RPM HARD drive in my MacBook Pro mid-2012 with an SSD 480 GB Sandisk and now the fan makes a loud noise. Sounds like it's revving at full speed. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Thank you.

You can try Macs with Intel processors: System management controller (SMC) reset and see if that fixes the problem. Unless you make a mistake in the reassembly, the two should be independent. On the other hand, it could be something in the design of the SSD. Personally, I would like to replace it with an OWC or OCZ.

To check if the two are somehow connected try to replace the old HDD to see if the fan slows down. If it then reinstalls the SSD, making attention to do correctly and re - test. See how to install the ribbon cable short connecting the drive to the motherboard. It's easy to get the pins on the misaligned ribbon cable.

  • Unrecognized internal SSD drive

Having an Office ATC-605-ur19 w / HDD included.   Added an additional internal Sandisk SSD more (120 GB).

The device is recognized by both the BIOS and appears in ther Device Manager (if the Type is "Unknown", the State is 'uninitialized', Partition style is 'not applicable').

However, it is not assigned a drive letter and I can't access it at all. It seems that the drivers are up to date.   Any suggestions on what is the problem?

Ok.  I'll give you two ways to set up your SSD.  The first way is an easy way and should work.  I tried the easy way and had a bit of trouble, so I ended up doing hard more (your time) way.

    Easy way:

    1. turn off your computer and unplug the power supply and unplug your HDD 500 GB SATA power cable (very important).

    2. make sure that your new SSD is ready (power and sata connected SATA data cable).

    3. Insert your USB recovery drive

    4. start your computer and the Acer screen, press delete on your keyboard to access your BIOS.

5 go into your BIOS to activate "Boot Menu" and then save and quit (I think it's F - 10 to save and exit, but do not remember)

    6. when your computer starts, the Acer screen press F - 12 to get the boot menu.

    7. Select your USB recovery drive.

    8. Select troubleshooting and put your pc and when it asks if you want to re-partition on the SSD, say yes

My advice is don't reconnect your 500 GB drive which can complicate things until you decide what you want to do with it.  And then I can help you with that.

I would like to know if the easy solution does not work and I'll give you the long way.

  • Upgrade to Windows 8 and now cannot access my external hard drive

I just changed OS from Vista to Windows 8 on July 3-4. Everything seems to work properly but when I tried to access my external Western Digital HD, it tells me access is denied. I copied this before making the switch: family videos and photos, documents, statements, etc., and now I can't access the drive. The drive appears on my computer but when I click on it it gives me an error message that I don't have permission. I don't see how that's possible, because I am the administrator. It is a home computer and I don't need all this security {deleted}.  The only thing I can think is that I didn't log on the computer when I used Vista but now I connect with Windows 8. The connection ID would be the reason why I can't access the drive? I tried to make the public drive and giving my self control of training, but I get refused every time. Someone at - it ideas? I'll be upset if I lost access to everything on my external.

    Jared

Thank you for your help. I think that I finally thought to it. By clicking on the icon my computer, it would show all available drives. One was removable storage drive I: WD Unlocker but it is only 7MB. After the installation of Windows 8, I had to click this drive tell him to unlock my WD J: drive. Once I did, I could see the folders and files but couldn't access it. I clicked on the I: drive and select Properties. He says that the disc was not shared so I said to share. Then I looked at the permissions and he says: read-only. Once I changed it to shared with full access, I can access now fully my WD J: will try to restart now and see if I still have access. Thanks again for your help.

The file "" *. "" JPG' could not be opened.

  • Portege Z930 - need of external controller for SSD drive internal

My Board TOSHIBA Portege (ex-portable) (Z930) burned with hot water. I removed the small SSD and now need to transfer the data with a USB drive on another PC.

I borrowed from a friend a SATA USB adapter with 2 interfaces and even small connectors for SATA was not small enough for SSD from TOSHIBA. Apparently, I need a special SATA USB adapter that installs on TOSHIBA Portege mSata.

The reason why I wrote here is because there are many SATA USB adapters in internet advertised, but it seems that they have larger connectors. While TOSHIBA calls the marked thereon mSATA SSD, but several people call mSATA for one size larger SSD.

I don't want to order that something does not again. Is there someone who already removed SSD Portege?
Could you give me a link for such adapter?

The laptop was equipped with a chip HM77 Intel Panther Point and with the launch of the Intel chip allowed laptop manufacturers to integrate SSD form factor mSATA (micro SATA).

There is also a difference between the mSATA form factors
The mSATA being limited to four chips (NAND) only, Intel has developed a new standard mSATA called m2 or mSATA2.

In many cases, this is also called NGFF (new generation form factor)
This standard m2 is longer and has more low a profile

I'm not sure if this Z930 Portege supports mSATA or mSATA2, but you check the internal SSD drive where this information should be available

  • How to do, step by step, back up my photos and my Word Documents to my XP PC on a hard drive external?

I need an 'idiots guide' to tell me how to back up my XP files on the external hard drive, I bought. When I plug in the USB the PC recognizes as component 'F' but wants to only read what is on it - how to consolidate my files in the files and send them to the external hard drive? I hope that the system can automatically asked "Do you want to save your files on this disk" - but no luck!

I can't advise you how to backup your personal data, since it depends a little on the program that you use to back up your data, but I would recommend that look you at something else that the backup utility provided with your version not specified XP.

I think that the Microsoft Support engineer should follow its own advice, use the XP Backup program to backup some system do not have a floppy drive (which is today typical), completely knock out the HARD drive or at least remove all personal files to simulate a disaster, restart and then see how he gets back data by using the backup utility in XP.  Please post your results.

If you are using in relying on the built in NT backup to back up your system, it is the primitive technology (obviously - since you will be asked for a floppy disk when it is done).  If you have a disaster (even minor), you will probably have a big problem, trying to recovery your stuff, if you don't have a floppy drive - or even if you do not have a floppy drive.

If you want to make a backup, it makes sense to use modern technology - and that the technology is not integrated into XP.

There are many popular options for XP Backup and imaging software (s) of third parties.

A people a popular seem to love East of Acronis.

With this (free 30 day trial) you backup, you can make a bootable CD or bootable USB (which is modern, huh?) and use than disaster.

They used to have a completely free version - maybe no more - just the trial, then you must buy it, but it is highly respected.

It is so much more robust than the XP Backup, it's laughable.

Many other options if you do a little research on Google...

Here are a few products that PML has proposed may be attractive (use Google to find them):

    Acronis
    Macrium Reflect
    Paragon backup and restore
    DriveImageXML

Some disk cloning software for you to Google ideas:

    Acronis True Image Home 11
    EASEUS ToDo Backup
Paragon Drive Copy or Partition Manager Personal
    Casper
    Norton Ghost
