  The drive that contains Windows XP displays empty because the file format of Windows XP is FAT (File allocation table) that is not supported by Windows 8.   You can use a Full Windows 7 or upgrade disk to do a custom clean install. This will remove all of your programs, but you can save your files and settings on an external storage before doing so. You will need to reinstall all your programs after installing Windows 7. Here are the steps:

  1. start Windows Upgrade Advisor to see if there are known problems that might affect installation and if you can install the 32-bit or the 64 bit version of Windows 7.
