Intel Gigabit VT Quad Port Server adapt

Hello

I ordered two new servers: Dell PowerEdge R710 with two dual-port broadcom nic´s.

In addition, we have installed an Intel Gigabit VT Quad Port Server Adapter.

During the installation of the esx4 (esx 4.0.0 system update 1), card intel is not recognized by esx...

Even after complete installation, it shows only the 4 broadcom nic´s...

What should I do to get this card running?

I read something on the irq sharing problems, so I disabled all the USB Ports in the BIOS, but without success.

I also changed the pci-express slot without success :/

Any tips? Maybe something I forgot?

Help, please!

Have you installed the drivers for the card when installing ESX?

  • Intel Quad Port Adapter AND

How the 4 ports on an Intel Gigabit AND Quad Port adapter do not appear on ESXi?

They appear as individual Ethernet Nics or if they present another way.

I want to add 4 ports on my machine of ESXi.

I discovered that I can not use LACP entirely in ESXi so my only other option is to direct connection my NAS units through their own nic on ESXi.

So in summary, I need 4 Gigabit ports assigned to a VSwitch.  Each will be assigned to a SAR unit.  In this scenario, the AND will work as I think it does?

FYI, I have and available PCI - X slots and only one only PCI-E 8 x, where my choice of the adapter.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

    They will appear individually.

  • Link 10 GB X 520 Intel on a single port R710

    Hello
    I have the following Setup
    X 520 DA2 10GbE SFP + optical Dual Port Server adapter
    R710
Attach the cable Cisco SFP + direct
    Reference Dell 8024F

When the server starts I get link on the two ports on the X 520 adapter. When the operating system (kernel of Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V) starts the link on port low down. It is at the same time the Qlogic FC adapters must be connected to the SAN FC network.
The Windows Device Manager reports "this device is working properly" on one of the ports and in the other port, it says "this device does not work properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) »

Intel driver version is 2.9.71.0 on the working port.
If I swap the cables between the port link is still in place on the same port-> no problem side switch/cable.
I swapped the 520 X to another adapter and the same problem came back-> no problems with the adapter.

I installed the firmware for X 520 Dell site and that did not help

I have the same configuration on both servers ESXi 4.1 works without any problem.

So what can make work a port and not the other? Dell support have not all useful ideas, not yet at least.

    Hello

I found a solution to my problem. After updating the driver Intel, I lost several operating system network interface cards. In my quad InterlNic only one port port work. I spent several hours trying different drivers for Intel and Broadcom. Bcom NICs had the same problem.

    Finally I found this support.microsoft.com/.../2460786

Disabling ipv6, to remove the network devices and reboot using devcon.exe. After that, I had 10 working NIC in my server.

Thanks for the suggestion to solve the problem. I like the idea of linking two ports to each other. I have not seen this before config.

  • Quad Port Nic has not seen on DELL R510 host

    All,

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. This weekend I will update multiple servers 4.0 Update 1. They where upgrades to 3.5 update 4 and they had no problem and work very well. They where of DELL 2950. We have also installed 3 new Dell R510 with integrated NIC '2' and '2' Port Quad Intel Nic is in the PCI slots.

After installation of ESX4 on boxes, it only see's Integrated NIC - two Broadcom. Again, really new to version 4.0 and commands, I used in 3.5 to find network cards and network config do not seem to get in the version 4.0...

How to recognize the NIC in the HOST?

    Thank you in advace

you will probably need http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/datacenter_downloads/vmware_vsphere_4/4#drivers_tools driver CD.  for example, 1000ET Intel gigabit cards use the driver CD VMware ESX/ESXi 4.0 to download driver version 1.3.19.12.1 for Intel 82575 and 82576 Gigabit Ethernet Controller.  Installation instructions are in the .iso image file in the file readme.txt.

  • Intel NETWORK adapters 4-Port unknown

I recently installed VMware vSphere 4 ESXi custom on a T610 Dell Dell.  I used the custom construction of Dell, 181792.  This server has 2 Broadcom network adapters on board and a 4 Port 1Gbe Intel NIC after installation, I noticed that the Intel NETWORK card did not show upward.

So, I used the tool to update host and installed (vmware-esx-drivers-net-igb_400.1.3.19.12.1-1.0.4.164009.185976) Intel NETWORK card drivers.  These installed fine and when I rebooted, I see 4 network cards.  But instead of listening to the make and model above the NICs, it shows them as 'unknown '.

Is it nothing to worry?  What he would show the map in this way?  I'm not entirely sure of what piece it has on it, as far as I know is the part of Dell:

"Copper Intel Quad port x 4 PCIe GbE NIC card (P/n-H092P)"

As a side question, I went with the generation of Dell custom that oppose the use of generate 4.0 U1.  What are the advantages/disadvantages to the use of the custom provider built?  I assume of course that the management agents.  But is there a downside?  Any reason why I won't use the generic version instead?

    Thank you.

    Matt

There are 2 files used by ESXi for drivers and display names.  /etc/VMware/simple.map tells ESXi which driver to load for PCI devices.   / etc/VMware/PCI. IDS is used to display data in the client vSphere tho console and the vCLI.   Your question is likely the correct data are missing in pci.ids and this is only a cosmetic problem.  As long as the machines received one identifying vmnic and the driver is loaded properly things will work fine.

It is best to stick with the installation image specific seller that you get the best suppliers of the ICD for the material.  The downside is that these ISOs own tend to lag behind a bit based on their release date.  Updates that you install will include specific CIM providers seller so once you used the vendor install image you will be OK to use the regular updates.

  • 10G or Quad Port Nic

I am currently working on which is better 10 G or a quad port NIC.

We have a server ESX (VMware standard) which began life as a server test and production of six months four vm who are there path on this box. I got a small budget to spend these four virtual machines to a new box.

Our goal right now is to move the production virtual machine to a new box and at the time of six to eight months to look and VMotion, DRS.

We have little space on one of the units of san to cover four virtual machines and growth.

I was looking at a Dell poweredge 2950, 2 x Quad core CPU, 32 GB of Ram, 2 x 15 k HD in Raid 1, 2 x 1 integrated nic G, I have 2 x 4 GB spare HBA for the san. And the intention to use a base of VMware license for this box. (Limitation is 3 ports PCI Express x)

Now, this is where the issue comes in I buy a quad port nic and divide

1 integrated network interface and Quad port nic 1 = Service Console
2 integrated network interface and Quad port nic 2 = VM vSwitch
NIC Quadport 3 and 4 = Vmotion (later when we improve)

Where can I buy a dual port 10G nic (EXPX9502AFXSR) and push the VM vSwitch and Vmotion on the 10G and create virtual networks for the Vmotion at a later date.

    Thank you

    Nick

We yesterday the same Dell PE2950 with a Quad nic and 2 HBAs - so that the config is ok, but I would have preferred 2 network adapters for the console and one for vmotion - or joining the 3 env set for virtual machines and vmotion.

And don't forget the consolidation of the different network interface cards (intel and broadcom) is not recommended - but works by us without problems.

If you already have 10G infrastructure, then you could get 10G network cards - but I wouldn't say not-expensive (just normal network).

In this case, I will get the latest version of the driver installed

Not sure why you posted this in the forum of storage, but in general a quad port card is just two controllers dual port on a single physical card.   On the PCI bus, you see what appears to be four (or two on card dual port) individual network cards.  Although there are two ports on a single chip.

  • ESX 4.1.0 detects no no new Quad port NIC

I came to work today to install some other Quad Port NIC in our ESX 4.1 cluster.

I bought Intel Gig ET2 Quads to go with the Intel Pro/1000 PT Quad already installed on host computers.

The ET2s are not detected by ESX but I can put an another Pro/1000 PT in and which will be displayed.

The ET2 is on the HCL for esx4.1, so it's a matter of not being able to mix and match the network interface cards? Or is there something I need to do to get it to load the drivers?

I wanted to get the ET2s in there for the unloading of network processor. but I have enough to replace all NICs outright.  We are in a transitional phase and are in need of more ports uplink for a few months but the ET2 seems to be a better card.

There is a good chance that you may need to add drivers. http://www.VMware.com/download/vsphere/drivers_tools.html

After obtaining some malware on my PC at home, I am considering it destroy and installing vSphere Hypervisor (and then buy a copy of 32-bit of Windows Vista, because my CPU 64 bit but will not support 64 bit OS comments).  My CPU is an "Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 CPU".  Someone at - it reason think that vSphere hypervisor does not work on it?  I'm not in the list of supported chips, but I've seen a few references to him in these forums.

ESX/ESXi are hypervisors 'bare metal '... You get only a based on linux with ESX service console, and you only have an interface very (very) minimum on ESXi (for the configuration of the host, do NOT use any VM)... You connect to the virtual machine running on ESX/ESXi via vSphere Client, run on a second system. The rest of the products such as VMware Player and even the Server VMware Workstation (which is NOT ESX/ESXi) allow you to run virtual machines on a host operating system. With ESX/ESXi, which IS the host OS, so there is nothing else to use.

If you do not have a second decent system to use to run the vSphere Client, then I opt to go with VMware Workstation and run 32 bit VM on it. Max memory on the system (so you can give more to VM) and put a minimum on the host operating system.

In General, ESX/ESXi is used on the server class (or upper class of workstation level) / hardware systems. I've had excellent results running ESXi on a Dell Precision Workstation T7400 for a couple of years now. I use my PWS490 to launch the vSphere Client to administer the host and connect to the virtual machine running on it. I could start my XPS 720 Tower out of a USB flash drive that I installed ESXi 4 on... You might try to go this route, to see if you can even install it and run it on your system (this will be the least destructive test method)... You can find instructions here... I suggest to use the method to install ESXi on a USB directly from the installation CD as this should be less problematic. I did successfully on a 2 GB USB flash drive not long ago... I plan to do with ESXi 4.1 soon (could opt for a 4 GB flash drive this time)...

You will still need to test it with another system to connect to the host if you plan to run virtual machines on ESX/ESXi however...
