Intermediate instant deletion/consolidation

A lot of discussion on the forum about the removal of instant intermediaries whose conclusion is (I think) that it's a bad idea and that she will probably lead to a system crash.

In view of the foregoing, any suggestions on how to handle the following situation:

Imagine a Machine virtual, composed of a string of snapshots, A, B, C, D, E, F.  Snap B, D and E are just too much room.  I realize that I can clone snap F / liquidation with a consolidated virtual machine, but what can do if my goal is to keep the Snap A and FA Snap?

Any way to do it?

Just highlight the nodes that you want to delete (B) and click 'delete '.

It is perhaps against intuitive, but 'delete' mean 'merge to the right node'

Kind regards

  • Expire instant deletion and killing servers

    Hello

I had a problem with my production system last week. I went to remove a few great shots, (3), and the virtual machine failed with the following error

"The virtual disk parent has changed, since the child has been created." using backup, etc. I managed to get the server up after awhile.

This morning, I tried to reproduce the problem in my test environment on a VM work.

1 has created a number of snapshots

    2. it has added new disc

    3. size of the extended drive

    4 creation of snapshot

5 copied more than 60 GB of data on a disc up, do the more than 60 GB snapshot folder.

6 delete all snapshots to merge them into the main VMDK

The test server is dead with the same error we got last week on the production server. It seems to me that the snapshot deletion process stops at halfway through the process, leaving the server in an unknown state.

Has anyone came across this issue before? What is a VM problem or a problem of SAN?

    See you soon,.

    Shay

I had virtual machines with instant BIG engaged, I have virtual machines with large number of snapshots are committed. Everything went well.

Remember that sometimes you need a lot of space when commit you instant BIG and especially several BIG snapshots. Once you started the snapshot commitment do not touch VM until the engagement completed.

  • Snapshot: Consolidated Helper - 0 how secure is to delete this?

    Hello

I would like to know how the security is to remove this snapshot and what are the prerequisites for this.

We use Veeam backup in our environment and it created serveral hidden after the hidden snapshots snapshots are removed by "remove all" we are always lett with this snapshot.

VMware KB: Remove all the snapshot operation results in a Helper consolidate when a data store has insufficient snapshot...

This article describes the exact situation, we face now in your environment.

I would like to know how to remove it safely.

I've included screenshots for your reference.

Re: Deleting consolidate Helper - 0

This discussion is very useful to understand how to remove the snapshot, but in my case its thick put in service of the disks.

Since it is a production server, I would like to know

    1. What are the risks associated with deleting Consolidated-helper-0 snapshot.

2.pre - accessories at the level of the data store, provisioning level which must be taken into account.

    Ask for advice.

    Thank you.

    Comer.

I can't you why consolidate-Helper has not been deleted, but in this case I don't see a risk in trying to 'Delete All' snapshots again. With the virtual machine, you will see an another instant coding Helper temporarily, but this snapshot as well as the existing one should be gone when the removal process is complete.

  • Still confused about snapshots - delete or consolidate?

I use snapshots so rarely, I find that I'm confused. I have a virtual machine that has a snapshot for quite awhile ago (like 10 months...). I want to get rid of him, to recover the space. I won't have to go back; the way in which the virtual machine is running and configured is now acceptable for my developer. This particular virtual machine does not show a setting "Must consolidate", in the list of virtual machines for this 5.1 ESXi host, so I don't think I need to "consolidate". There is only the snapshot in the Snapshot Manager.

When I search "instant delete" in the VMware knowledge base, he told me that a 'Delete' will do a consolidation, and then delete the snapshot. This looks like what I want. But what is the difference between "Delete" and "consolidate"? "Consolidate" not he removes the snapshot later?

In my situation, what should I do? I think I need to 'delete '. This will get rid of the snapshot, but let my VM in the State it's in now. Is this correct? (Also, I could do this with the virtual machine, because the snapshot file is like 35G in size now, and I know that a delete or consolidate the will really take a lot of time with a snapshot this return). We will migrate all our warehouses of our current HP SAN data to a new SAN from Dell, so I want to clean up snapshots now.

    Thank you

    Hello Michael,

Actually consolidate and remove it from the same operation they commit it again records - that is to say the changes when the virtual machine will run on the snapshot on basic disks.

consolidate - validations of the disk-based data and removes the snapshot

Delete - validating data at the base disk and deleted files from snapshots.

Delete - Deletes the snapshot but does not commit the data on the basic disk.

The only reason why consolidate option has been added in ESX 5.0 or later versions was much assumed that the option remove would remove files and does not validate the data.

But on the real scenario. Just to avoid this VMware came with consolidate it. that consolidate the fact on background is it takes another snapshot and performs delete it all operations. Hope that clarifies the confusion.

And in your situation, you should make clear all.

    Thank you

  • When I delete an email it takes about 10 seconds to answer

When I delete an email it takes about 10 seconds to react before its deleted. This just started happening. When I deleted before it started, it would be an instant deletion. All the other functions on Thunderbird seem to work OK.

  • 'Ask before deleting' Notes

I installed 9.3.2 on my iPhone and was pleased to see that Notes is seeking more sophisticated - and there are some new features such as the addition of a drawing, etc.. But I accidentally hit the button Delete and then freaked out when he simply disappeared, just like that. I realize that there is a new "Recently deleted" folder, but prior to that, he is always asked to confirm if you want to delete a note. This instant deletion of a note as soon as your finger brushes the Trash button makes me really nervous. I don't understand why they would take away a feature like confirmation before deletion, which was previously available only to avoid situations where you don't even know that you have removed a note, because there is literally no notice before it disappears just; If you are not looking at your screen you never know it happened... and then after 30 days it is gone forever. As much as there is an option to turn the option "Ask before deleting" Mail, Contacts, calendars. Can we do not have the same option for Notes? Or at least just the do each time by default, just in case. Apple, please report it.

Even if I am here, I am also disappointed that the new police force has reformatted all my notes so that the lists which have been made intentionally points of a line are now 2 lines, because the new policy takes more space; either because it is larger, or tracking or kerning is superior or something like that. Would be nice if we could adjust the font size and other options for fonts in the Notes.

    Thank you

    I agree with you!

  • Windows Mail deletes any e-mail as soon as it is read and closed

A few days ago Windows Mail suddenly started to delete all e-mails as soon as I read and closed.  He has also instantly deleted previously read all mails.  These emails are not visible in the elements deleted - they disappeared completely.

This problem is only happening in my account (I am the computer administrator) - user account of my wife is not affected.  I can't find any setting that could be the cause.

    Can anyone help?

A final servile apology - I found the cause of the problem.  In the view-> current view option, the setting had somehow changed to show all Messages to hide Read Messages.  When I reset, all of my emails 'disappeared' reappeared.  I don't know how it happened, because it is not an option that I knowingly consulted before (I just found today).

Thank you for your efforts - I regret that they were not necessary.

  • VM wants to drive consolidation, but no snapshots are listed in the Snapshot Manager

After a replication failed with VEEAM, I get this on one of my virtual machines:

    "Configuration problems.

Disks of virtual machines-building is necessary. »

without having any snapshots indicate Manager snapshots.

The name of the drive listed under 'change settings' does, that the disk is a snapshot, however.

How to solve this problem properly?

    Best regards, Lars.

The two option should work fine even when the virtual machine is running. According to the snapshot sizes, deleting it may take a while so please be patient.

    André

PS: A thought if the Basic virtual disk is thin and put into operation, make sure that you have enough of free disk space on the data store before starting the deletion/consolidation!

  • Host of hard drive is full - need to delete snapshots

    Hello

I try to help someone who has a Mac running Windows 7 64 bit Pro using VMware Fusion 5.0.3.  They have a hard disk of 1 TB but now only 725 MB of free space!

I checked the settings of VMware and they had AutoProtect Snapshots on 1 dollar a day, and set "maximum number of snapshots to keep: ' 3.

When you view the instant history, it shows that there are 51 snapshots with the first (oldest) being 55.4 GB, GB 8.7 second and third 958,3 MB.  There is also a second tree that has only one sheet about 20 shots later.

What is the best way to remove these pictures I saw barley have any storage space.

I also don't mind not completely destroy all snapshots and new.

    Thanks in advance!

haachee wrote: I'm not afraid also completely destroy all snapshots and new.

What do you mean exactly by that?

What is the best way to remove these pictures I saw barley have any storage space.

With this little space it is really not that you can do with this package of Virtual Machine on this disk is almost full for correctly * clean. * Properly, i.e. delete snapshots via the Snapshot Manager.  You must either release the right amount of space needed to accomplish the task or temporarily move the package of Virtual Machine to another disk that has the amount of space needed for the appropriate task.

There are other options, but I guess that when you answer the question I asked can I give more details.

BTW DO NOT try a whole instant deletion via the snapshot to manage with so littk of free space on the disk of the host that you will break it doing!

  • Delete a snapshot in ESXi 5 when data store is almost full

I'm very skiddish on use or deletion of snapshots after a disaster, I had with them last year. So, I thought I would get your recommendation before you continue.

I have a virtual machine running on the host with about 700 GB of total space on the data store. The virtual machine uses about 500GB and there is only a snapshot of the virtual machine. The virtual machine uses a disc thin provisioned. I received a warning that there is insufficient data on the space store and there are only about 120 GB left. Is it safe to remove the snapshot? Should we double the size of the virtual machine to "consolidate? The last time I did it with multiple snapshots and a lot less space, it's disaster.

Edit: Here's what's on the data store (for this virtual machine). There is an another VM on the same data store which shows it takes 40 GB of space.

    ApolloVMonDatastore1.png

Here's what it says on the storage to Apollo (the virtual computer name) under summary in vSphere:

    ApolloVMsummary.png

The basic disk can only 'baloon' upward only by the amount of data in the snapshot, which is 214 GB function provided screenshot and to be on the safe side, you have to assume that he will do. If you need to at least 214 (I'd Go 220) free on the data store for a safe removal-snapshot operation.

Worse: these 214 GBs are given new, added after the creation of the snap. You the kickoff of the removal process. Basic disk to grow per GB 214. Currently, it consumes 355 GB so it will grow up to 569GB. Only one time all the data of the snap is committed to basic disk, the snapshot will be deleted. This is why you need some 220 GB free and available on the data store to start the removal process.

Instant deletion on an engine out of VM might help a little, but looks like not as much as you want.

If you shut down the virtual, pagefile will be deleted which will free up to 4 GB.

Also if you delete a wink on the virtual machine performance, actually another cliché will be created to store the changes that VM is done during the delete operation. According to the rate of change of data within your VM and the time required for the delete operation, it will take little extra space on the data store as well. This need for extra space can be avoided by removing the snap while the VM is turned off.

However, in your case the virtual computer power on off won't help

Bottomline - if you can, find a way to get 220 + GB of free space on your data store before you delete the snapshot. Otherwise, the next option is VM migration to a different data store with storage vMotion (without interruption) and deletion of snapshots there (once again, potentially without interruption). A last - cloning in another data store that involves downtime.

And you cannot clone to USB.

  • Snapshots files remain on the disk

    Hello

A few days ago that I needed to remove some snpshots but 5 GB of free space on the disk was not enough, then the error message "cannot delete the snapshot" popped up, the snapshot in the Snapshot Manager had disappeared, but the files were still there. I created a new capture instant, deleted and all files have been grouped for my snapshot folder was returned to 0bytes, everything is beautiful.

After continuing to work with my vm I created ss, deleted ss without error msg, but now there are files left in my folder of snapshots again without a corresponding section in the Snapshot Manager (VM 50 GB, Snapshots 7 GB).

In addition, I am not able compact virtual disks (my virtual machine contains two system + data): when clicking on compact, the error "the system cannot find the specified file" occurs. File log says VMw seeks a vmdk in the root folder, but the file is located in the snapshot folder now.

Creates a full clone of the files with correct sizes, 50 GB VM, instant 0GO, but I can not and do not want to create a clone every time I need to save space on my SSD.

    How to delete the files?

    Thank you!

When cloning you will have only the different UUID and a different MAC address. The operating system did not get changed.

With regard to the consolidation of assistance. To see (and delete) the snapshot in the Manager of snapshots, remove the line snapshot0.clientFlags = "1" of the vmsd file while the virtual machine is not open in the tabs of VMware Workstation (no file lck in the folder).

I guess that you have a current backup of the files, just in case something goes wrong (which really shouldn't).
