  • Adobe PDF Reader - control ActiveX Internet Explorer 11 fails with unspecified error.

    Hello, I'm responsoible to our company's web applications. Part of this application displays PDF files into the browser. Please read the overview of things that I already tried before offering suggestions. I write here before raising the issue through CC for the support teams in the hope that someone is aware of the solution or workaround.

    Recently, we received a large number of requests for assistance regarding files PDF no longer display in the browser window on Internet Explorer 11 despite the current plugins and update being installed. I have reproduced this problem on several machines now. All are running Windows 7 Professional x 64 with IE11, and all Microsoft and Adobe updates are up-to-date. I have limited access to test on other combinations of BONE; However, given the number of customers who have called us, I am sure that the issue is widespread.

    When you try to instantiate the ActiveX control, there is a non-specific error returned: "Error". The following code in the console displays the message:

    try {var ax = new ActiveXObject ("AcroPDF.PDF") ;} catch (e) {console.log (e) ;}

    • I tried using the latest version of the plugin installed by XI Acrobat or Adobe Reader XI (11.06.70). Uninstalling and reinstalling does not solve the problem.
    • I ran the installation repair on the Help menu in Reader and Acrobat, nothing helps.
    • ActiveX filtering does not cause the issue. I checked that it is disabled. The control is not blocked by the preference of the user. I checked that it is authorized to run the site in my configuration.
    • Internet Explorer, Enhanced Protected Mode is not causing the problem. I tested in several security zones and lowered all minimum of IE to the strict security settings.
    • The number of instances of increments AcroPDF.dll during an attempt to instantiate the control, then it is called by EI; "Error" is returned from the DLL not the OLE Automation Server.
    • Other ActiveX controls can be instantiated and will work perfectly, including controls only 32-bit.
    • I tried editing the registry has suggested to "HCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\TabProcGrowth" (DWORD) to 1 to no effect.

    Thank you, everyone for the advice.

    I fixed this problem by following these steps:

    -Reset IE11 (Tools-> Internet options-> advanced)

    -Start the ActiveX Installer service in services

    -Online install IE8 manually, not through Windows Update/automatic updates! -Online http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

    -Online save the installer to your desktop, do not run it.  When you are ready to install IE8, right click on the saved file and select 'run as administrator '.

    -Online uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google;) Yahoo; Windows Live) and a third of the Windows themes before installing IE8.

    -Online close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon of the taskbar) before installing or uninstalling IE8.

    => I highly recommend disable your antivirus and anti-spyware "protection system" application (with the exception of the Defender) before you install (or uninstall) an update of IE.  If you use a third party firewall [and you are], I recommend neutralizing him and then activation of the front Windows Firewall install (or uninstall) an update of IE.

    -Online restart twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then check-in to Windows Update and install the critical updates of security offered.

    => For the best chance of success with IE8, make sure that your version of the Kaspersky Anti-virus application, all anti-spyware applications (other than the Defender) and your third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 before decide you to install it.

    First - a tip - get hardware drivers with hardware manufacturers - not Microsoft.

    Get SP2 (manually) and save it to your desktop. (There's a link here.) [You are a COMPUTER professional for now.]

    Install it.

    Then restart at least a couple of times for a few minutes between each restart.

    Get SP3 (manually) and save it to your desktop. (There's a link here.) [You are a COMPUTER professional for now.]

    Install it.

    Download at least Internet Explorer 7 (if it is not Internet Explorer 8).

    Install it.

    Reset.

    Now, try to get the updates through the normal web page (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) and see how much more you can get (100 +) and keep checking until you no longer have.
