invalid character in administrative tools

I get the message error 'administration tools contains an invalid character' when you try to uninstall a program.  What should I do?

Hi Kathy28,

A. how you try to uninstall the program?

B. recent changes made on your computer?

This problem may occur when the program or the program installer is incompatible with Windows Vista.

You can try the methods from the article below and check if it helps.

  • One of your filters uses a custom header that contains an invalid character.

When I send an email, you receive the following error message:

«One of your filters uses a custom header that contains an invalid character, such as ':', a nonprintable character, a non-ascii character or an 8-bit ascii character.» Please change the msgFilterRules.dat file, which contains your filters to remove characters not valid in your custom headers".

It is followed by a message saying that the email was sent and saved despite the error.

The problem occurred after the transfer to 10 Windows (from Win 7)

I deleted all files msgFilterRules.dat and all filters, but the message persists.

Any suggestions on what else to try?

    Thank you
    Ben

    Problem solved.

After you delete all files/imap mail entries, the problem disappeared.

  • ATML Reporting: "an invalid character was found in text content."

When you use ATML and including non-ASCII characters (code decimal 128 and more), the generated report is not viewable in Internet Explorer (or Firefox, in fact), producing the error "an invalid character was found in text content." I think it's because TestStand isn't actually encoding the content of the report to the UTF-8 format. The same sequence produces a clickthrough report XML declaration. It seems that this issue has been found (and fixed) for the XML declaration but many years back.

If you open the attached XML file in UTF-8 compatible text editor (I used the Notepad) and re-save specifically in UTF-8 format, IE will happily consider subsequently report. The part that really confuses me is that TestStand generates successfully the temporary HTML version of the report for the integrated report viewer (also attached), the parser used internally by TestStand must be a bit more lenient than IE.

I've included an example with a VI sequence, which returns only a string of ReportText of these problematic characters.

    ASBO-

Thank you for bringing This problem to our attention. This will be fixed in a future version of TestStand. In the meantime, you can fix this problem with your current version of TestStand by editing the reportgen_atml.seq file. I've attached an example of how you could modify the reportgen_atml.seq file to fix it in this position. Please, note that this is simply an example of correct behaviour and may not be the final implementation included in future versions of TestStand. I recommend that you do not replace or delete your reportgen_atml.seq file and save the version annexed to your \Components\Models directory.

I hope this helps. Thanks again for this bring to our attention.

    What does "disabled" for you?

Are mysteriously missing or mysteriously disabled administrative tools?

If you go into Control Panel, completely missing the Tools folder administration, or is there but empty?

What do you think has happened since the last time things worked correctly?

I find that Microsoft hired 'expert' technician support ideas that can help you from:

"Method 1", to avoid the administrative tools shortcuts in the Panel that you copy and paste.  Administration tools belong in the Administrative Tools folder - not in the control panel.

Regarding the "method 2", you don't describe symptoms compatible with a need to run sfc/scannow.

In addition, the System File Checker don't know or don't care shortcuts to administration tools (or indeed all the shortcuts) or whether they are enabled or not.  It's not what they did System File Checker, this isn't how it works and it's not what it is for.

It's just another committed Microsoft Support Engineer 'expert' wild goose chase.  Suggesting he looks like to say "I don't know what the problem is or how to fix it.

    But maybe you'll get lucky.

    I'm a novice help!

    Hi robertzee,

-Did you of recent changes made to your computer before this problem?

Method 1: Follow the suggestion given in this link and check if this may help in fixing the issue:

Method 2: Try the following steps to get the contents of the folder "admin tools".

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the article windows below:

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

    b. type regedit.exe, and then press ENTER.

    c. in the Registry Editor window, navigate to these locations:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-SOFTWARE-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion------Explorer------user Shell folders

    d. delete the value named common administrative tools (if any).

1 is applicable to all programs that you are trying to install this question?

  • Error in mmcbase. DLL when opening administrative tools

I get the following error message when you try to start a number of administrative tools: -.

"The procedure entry point? PickIconDlg@@YGHPAUHWND__@@PAGIPAH@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library mmcbase. "DLL"

Title of the message box is "mmc.exe - Entry Point not found".

What can I do to fix this?

I downloaded my SP3 mmc.exe on my SkyDrive and you can download it from this link:

    http://CID-6a7e789cab1d6f39.Office.live.com/Browse.aspx/.documents?UC=0&WA=wsignin1.0&SA=800701983

If there is a problem downloading, let me know because I'm not too sure about this thing of SkyDrive yet.  It appears, it will warn you about a risk when downloading executables, but you can trust me...

    You need to replace c:\windows\system32\mmc.exe

Make a copy of your current mmc.exe file somewhere a course, just in case you need to put it back.  If something went wrong with your SP3 update, you have still some other discoveries later.

It's no surprise that run sfc/scannow was no difference because sfc/scannow concerns only on files in this folder:

    %SystemRoot%\System32\Dllcache

Running sfc/scannow is a waste of time for system problems (unless you want to check your dllcache folder) as it will not update/replace any file (s) in another system folder (this is why I will never even move for the problems of the system).

    Let's see how it works.

Do, or do not. There is no test.

  • No shortcut for the Microsoft local security policy, can not find in administrative tools (Control Panel)... Even after several updates.

Hi, I've updated my Windows XP all current updates. But I still need this local security policy.

Is there a specific link for this download, or should I look elsewhere - other than the administrative tools?

Windows XP Home Edition is not local security policy.  This requires Windows XP Professional.

What should you change?  There could be another way to do it.

  • How can I remove the Administrative Tools, network connections, printers & Fax and scanners and cameras my desktop icons?

Recently, I installed a trial version of Tune Up Utilities 2009. During one of the scans/tune-ups, he gave me the option to display the Administrative Tools, network connections, printers & Fax and Scanners & cameras icons on my desktop. I checked ok, however, now, I think it's too crowded in my office and you want to remove them... right on the desktop, not everywhere else they are located. I tried everything I know to remove them without success. Anyone knows where is the menu option to display on the desktop so I can uncheck or choose Delete? I don't want to have to change all the .ini files or .bat to because I'm afraid I don't do it correctly and create other problems.

    Hello tellis1230

I don't know what you have tried, but have a look here

    Right-click Desktop-desktop/properties/Office/Customization

    Uncheck what you don't want

  • Menu administration tools is missing from the Start Menu of Vista

I don't know how or when that happened, but today when I opened the whole start, the administration tools option menu was missing.  I went into the folder program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Démarrer\Programmes and the Administrative Tools folder was there with all its contents. Yet it does not appear when you click on the Start button.  Any ideas what the cause and healing can be?
