  More than the upgrade of the air seems to have issues, whether all connect at the same time or other problems. I had to plug my phone into the computer, update itunes to the latest, published today, then ios upgrade 10.0.1 and it is fine now. You could bring to the apple store and probably use their computers, just don't tell the computer to trust the phone.

  Note that the likely cause here is an older version of iTunes. Since iOS 10 is still new, it is important to have the latest version of iTunes installed. Currently, it is 12.5.1, that requires OS X 10.9.5 or later version must be installed:

  Here's my problem: my iPhone 6 (iOS 10.0.1) does not connect to my iTunes (11.4) on my Macbook Pro (2008) 10.6.8 running. The message I get is: "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone 6 because an invalid response was received from the device."

  The steps I did:

  1 - uninstall iTunes and reset the folder (/ var/db/lockdown) reinstall iTunes (11.4). When I connect my phone iPhone and iTunes asks if I want to trust each other. I click ok and trust on both.

  .. .and that's it! Still does not work.

  You are right. An iPhone with iOS 10.0.1 requires the latest version of iTunes, 12.5.1, which requires OS X 10.9.5 or above. Your version of iTunes is too old, just like the OS X version to support.

  I am running OSX on a macbook plus old 4.1 10.7 and iTunes is on 12.2 and my iPhone is on IOS 10. Whenever I plug my phone into my laptop I get the message "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone"iPhone"because an invalid response was received from the device." I tried to have a friend hook up his iPhone 5 and it says the same thing. I read online that I'll have to do a restore on my phone, but I can't save it up to my computer to do. I also tried completely uninstalling iTunes and install an earlier version, but she telling me I need to download the updated version, it won't let me do a backup. There is no damage or anything done to my USB slots or my phone port, they seem to work for everything else very well (Docking station, another USB compatible hardware, etc.)

The only way to fix this is to go to https://iforget.apple.com to retrieve the password of your Apple ID, or remove the purchased/downloaded content with this ID, and purchase/download with new Apple ID.

  You can also put your iPhone into Recovery Mode by plugging your iPhone into your wall outlet instead. To do this, hold the Home and Sleep/Wake button and do not let go of these until you see the iTunes logo appear after the Apple logo.
