  I suggest that you download and install OpenOffice.  It is FREE and is open to all documents created in MS Office.  If it doesn't, at least it costs you nothing to try.

  As I said, I'm running a clean version of Windows XP Pro 32 with SP 3.  Any advice would be most appreciated.  Thank you very much.

After all that, I reinstalled all the necessary updates and realized when I tried the original installation, I did turn sp2, but not sp 3 so this time I made sure to get that taken care of first.  And now, well you know where I am now!
