  RAR files are not more likely to contain a virus or Malware any that any other file. (Assuming that you are not running a decent AV program).

• Now that Microsft withdrew in favor of XP is there a safe way to install sp3 of XP on a PC recently formatted which was done with an old copy of XP.

  I can't really answer this question completely because I don't know what software was used, or what processes might have been involved in stitching panoramic photo. A possible "fix" would be to save the image on an external and view on a larger screen - like an iMac.
