Is time Machine a safe backup

I use Time Machine to back up files on my iMac.

Some of these files (credit card info, etc) can be found in a special Folder.dmg that I created with the disk utility application.

This Folder.dmg is a disk image that is password protected, so whenever I want to access the files in Folder.dmg I have to enter the password that I attributed to him.

My question is: the Time Machine backup, I create also require this password to access the files in Folder.dmg?

(In other if someone steals my back upwards, would words, know the Folder.dmg password to access its content?)

Thank you very much.

That is right.

I would like to know how can I use Time Machine for frequent backups after the initial. Specifically, I want to know how I can assure you that Time Machine DO backup files that have changed since the initial AND only the new backup files that have been added to the hard drive since the last backup?  In other words, Time Machine will do it automatically or it will save all the entire hard drive again?

    Time Machine which will automatically

    Yes.

  • time machine remove the backup target drive

Running El Capitan - I have set up three units for Time Machine backup: a RAID and a dock that is used for a pair of alternation of readers of archive. One of two archives training to life in a safe Bank and I have Exchange it with the current drive once a week.

Before I upgraded my OS, Time Machine would simply be two backups between some readers were available and do so without comment. Now, after the upgrade, Time Machine sees that one of the pair is missing and he complains. This means that one time every three hours Time Machine issues a warning that one of the players is not available.

I have not found a way to disable this warning.

Be resigning myself to this, I decided that I simply change the names of readers Archives are identical, and then remove the 'third' drive in the list. With this version of Time Machine, I don't see a button "select disk" or any other way for the list of target readers and remove one of them. The options button allows you to control the volume of the source, not the target volumes.

Either I have to stop the needless alert or remove a drive in the list.

    Any suggestions?

Re: community - the only results of a search of a community of Time Machine is under Mountain Lion. Sorry if this is too broad

After losing all kinds of weather (including a right click on the list of drives for backup and the research in all directions - including multiple searches on google), I discovered that you have right click on the drive icon in the list to use or remove the drive. This follows a different set of rules than the Finder user interface.

  • Time Machine is not backup as I loaded Sierra

My time Machine says that it has not saved for 890days? Since I loaded Sierra now its in "preparing backup" permanent mode

  • Time Machine blocked preparation backup

    Hi community

Time Machine, I get the iMac to backup, Time Capsule 371 GB of the preparation phase of backup available 998 GB for one eternity, as others have reported.

My system is an iMac (27-inch, late 2009), processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB video card and a physical disk internal 1 TB ST31000528AS Sata media.

My last backup was September 16, 2016 @ 1257 GMT and my software was the last version of El Capitan.  (I backup to another external HARD drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner and backup guru Mac unfortunately I don't have a big enough other ext HDD to run a time Machine backup to as well).

When the TC is connected I can see the iMac and iMac.sparsebundle backup folder and when I enter the time Machine I can see the chronology running back from 16 Sep and it allows me to access the files in the folders.  So, I guess that the disk HARD of TC is OK.

Software changes have been: 1 MS a copy of CCleaner Free 1.14.451, 2 Ms Security Update 2016-001, 13 Sep Adobe Flash, 14 Sep 12.5.1, 16 Sep Digital Camera RAW compatibility update iTunes.  Never had a problem before with these downloads.  Safari updated September 20, then to Sierra 22 Sep having saved first using the CCC and MBG.

Through the various pages of help through Google.  Follow-up advice given to reset the SMC and the PRAM, deleted Sophos home and com.apple.TimeMachine.plist and com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.lockfile.

Rebooted and restarted the iMac and Time Capsule several times, done many backups check the reset even the time Capsule disk, but all without success.

I'm still stuck in preparation of backup when I reselect the backup drive.

    Can someone help please?

Finally, I had a problem in 2014 when Apple recalled the iMac to a HARD drive replacement program.  This was successful, but a few days later the Time Machine and time Capsule would not save.  This is due to the component change when the UUID was different.  The advice I would have given were to know how inherit backup and controls disk associated within the Terminal. Stupidly, I started again when the TC asked me to and then discovered the Terminal commands a few days later.  The loss of backups of 4 years was no big problem, so I suppose that if I have to, I won't again unless a member of the smart community can better advise me please?

    Good community

I forgot to tell you that I save on a Capsule of 1 GB bought in 2010 with the iMac.

Don't know how, but not before I finished posting my above query Time Machine kicked back in action and performed a backup pick up all the changes, about 50 GB since Sept. 16.

He did once again this morning, so I'm sorry I can't post what Time Machine and my Time Capsule due action to act properly.

I have the same problem. I found this,

macOS, problems of the Sierra: Time Machine backup Mac

Time Machine problems prevented the Mac owners of their devices to backup since the upgrade to Mac OS Sierra, and the problem is widespread enough that Apple has published a guide on what to do if you can't back up:

    Discount for the iMac SMC

    1. turn off the device

    2. unplug the power cord from the monitor

    3. wait 60 seconds

    4 reconnect the power cord

    5. DON'T TURN ON DEVICE

    Reset the PRAM

    1. the computer must always be switched off.

    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: command, Option, P, and r. you need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

    3. press and release the power button to turn on the computer.

    4. press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You have to press these keys before the gray screen appears. Continue to hold the keys down until the computer is restarted, and you hear the tone of starting for the 3rd time.

    5. release the keys.

You can then try to save again. If this does not work, try to disable indexing on the drive you want to back up.

but I'm not sure it's the same question. I'll try it and report.

  • First Time Machine to NAS backup freezes at the same point, Console polluted by the same mistakes.

I just configured my LaCie 5big Network2 act as a time Machine, but it is not back up correctly. When I run it always freezes at 14.70GB/237.71GB, even after deleting the backup and starting up again. I don't know if it of related or not, but the Console is littered with the same error messages (even if Time Machine is not running):

If I stop the backup and restart it, it will get stuck after 7KB. If I delete the backup and starting a new one, it will get stuck at 14,70 Go again. This could be the cause? The NAS is configured correctly and firmware is up to date, disks are operational and functioning perfectly.

    My system is a 2015 retina MBP 15 "16GB / 500GB.

    Time Machine is a LaCie 5big Network2.

LaCie can support this, but isn't Apple. the NAS can have its own propreitary features or a network can introduce the software is not designed for questions.

If you want to use a NAS for backup, you can consider Carbon Copy Cloner as alternative

  • Time Machine crashes during backup

    Hi all

I have a crush of Promise Raid connected to a Mini Mac OS X Server 10.9.5 (Mavericks) running. I have two volumes of backup Time Machine, 1 is a partition of the Raid itself, and the other is a 5 TB USB external drive. The goal was to have Time Machine backup ping-pong between the two. And for a while, that's how it worked.

After about a week of reliable backup, Time Machine will now just hang it on a point in the backup and do nothing. I let it run for as long as 2 weeks just to be sure, but it never moves. I have to jump the backup. Then, it hangs on the other disk in the same exact spot.

I tried to reformat completely each player and the best I've managed to do is backup successfully for nearly a week. Readers have enough space, but for some reason, the backup no longer works.

I've been struggling with this for over a year without success. The worst is that when I think that I have work, I return back to retrieve something and find that he has not worked for a week (or more). Very frustrating.

At this point, I'm looking in a 3rd party like Carbon Copy Cloner utility. But I like the ease and the Time Machine product structure. We do hard backups on DVD, so it's really just for jobs, we kept on our server that exist for about a month before be saved permanently.

    Thanks for the help,

    Rob

I think maybe it's time to give up that hard drive and get a new start.  You might be able to fix it, but I wouldn't try to fix it without already having another backup in place.    The fact that it failed sporadically for more than a year is not a good thing.  Always have at least two copies of any data that is essential at all times *:

  • Opening iPhoto library from a backup Time Machine in pictures

I'm trying to make sure I have backups of all the photos of my old iPhotos library (something that I can open the individual files in the Finder, not just a copy of "iPhoto" Library). I turned on my old iMac that is not used much more to make copies, and when I open 'Photos' my iPhoto library is not linked. When I hold "option" at the opening of the Photos app, I see these options:

I think I'm trying to access the old iPhoto library, so I click on it, but then I see this message:

I tried to go to disk utility to repair permissions, but the problem persists. My next thought was to open an old Time Machine backup and try and open the backup iPhoto library, but when I do that, I see this screen:

Any suggestions on how to access my old photos? What I am doing wrong?

    Thank you!

Are these old libraries or backups Time Machine? TM backups cannot be opened directly, you must first use TM to restore the disk

and where are these libraries? On the main drive or on an eternal drive? If on a DHM what format is and how is it connected?

  • Time Machine asking to create new backup, backups, but seems to work very well

Time Machine tells me that he wants to delete my backup history and create a new backup volume, but it seems to be back up files very well. I use an Apple AirPort WiFi. Must I just keep ignoring Time machine to start a new backup volume? I really don't want to lose my backup history.

    Something is not here.

When time Machine tell the backup is corrupt and he must wipe... then it can save is more to it.

That probably makes TM uses your local hard drive to a backup snapshot from the network on your Time Capsule version (or AE more USB drive) is now corrupted.

Sorry, but your history of Time Machine is now dead and lost... and just need to bury. There is rarely any great point by making a backup of the sparsebundle... but if you are adamant then for sure just copy the sparsebundle to a different location... erase the drive, and then start over... You have no choice.

  • Time Machine backup failure

    I get the message:

Time Machine could not complete the backup "Backups Time Machine". Full backup impossible. An error occurred during the creation of the backup folder.

I reboot the system and am able to do the backup.

    Three questions:

1 is my default backup drive and must be replaced?

    2. If I get a new drive, do I need to do any formatting when connecting it to my system?

    3. is there anything else that would work not to mention that the system restarts?

    Thank you!

I should add that failures occur about once or twice a week.

  • time machine/capsule backup lost

    Hello

When wanting to access the saved data of time capsule via the time machine, time machine shows zero backup history while there would be more than a year with a value of more than 900 GB.  I get this in time machine preferences:

When you click on the available data disk, time capsule/machine displays no backup history and appears empty; the above data disk it is not accessible and cannot be removed.  Yet one of these disks is indicated as an accountant 963 GB of data, and I suspect that it is the only inaccessible.  How the hell could this happen?  Anyone has an idea, and advises?  I do not tinker with the application and airport utility shows no connectivity issues.  Please, let me know as soon as possible - thanks!

    Frank M.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for Time Machine discovered a corruption of backup... it will then proceed to delete the backup and start over. The sparsebundle is not deleted... He still occupies the space that it used to before deleting the content took place.

The only way to know if that is really what happened is to open the sparsebundle in the finder. See if it's contained in there... If there is... the question is different. TM has lost its connection to its own protection is also not rare. Any change in the network, you have done for this cause. It is possible to reconnect to the existing backups.

    My recommendations...

    1. read some of Pondini howto in order to understand what is happening.

    http://pondini.org/TM/troubleshooting.html

A4 and A5 are the most useful... TM to reset and verify backups.

    2. open the sparsebundle in the Finder and see if there is indeed always glad... If so, check in the TC. To do this through the disk tab in the airport utility. Plug in a USB key in the TC...

Once you check the disk...... delete it and start a new backup.

You can still access the old backup by plugging the USB directly to the computer... Right-click on the icon of TM in the dock. And select Browse... According to the screenshot below.

The TM and TC combo turns out to be less reliable over time (pun intended).

  • Two Time Machine drive backup restore to a single hard disk?

    Hello world

I have a 2011 iMac that has a SSD running OSX and holding all of my applications.

I also have a mechanical hard drive internal 3TO with my user on it and all my documents and files.

I just bought a new iMac with a merger of 3 TB drive only and I need to restore everything as it is now (from two readers) on one drive in the new iMac.

What is the best way to go about this?

The SSD source looks like this:

The Macintosh HD source looks like this ("timothy" is my user):

Time machine has two backups separated according to me, one for each of the two drives internal, just restore both fully?

  • Is there an advantage to having a backup disk image of Macintosh HD (for MacBook Pro) to ease/speed of recovery after a disk failure rather than using Time Machine to recover?

I'm trying to understand the best way to prepare for the recovery of a failure in the drive for a MacBook Pro.

I do not understand the nuances of the time Machine - I know from personal experience that it is a recovery tool great when your existing drive is intact and you're just trying to restore a file.  But what happens if the drive has a hardware failure and needs to be replaced?

Is there an advantage to take periodic images of Macintosh HD for quick recovery (and then using the incremental backups Time Machine to catch up to the current position).  Or Time Machine may facilitate a recovery in case of failure of the disc just as easily/quickly that will give it to have a separate image backup?

Thanks in advance for your help.

YES!.  If you have a clone boot disk, you can either connect it to a MBP or Exchange it with the internal HDD failed and be back in business quickly.  Time machine, as good as is, can take several hours to restore your system, depending on the amount of data.

For cloning, I recommend Carbon Copy Cloner.  It is not free, but it's worth the price:

    https://Bombich.com/

I use it in conjunction with Time Machine.  (two backups are better than one)

    Ciao.
