  I back up my data to an external drive for several reasons.  The first is my data - if I put on the cloud, someone else has control over it, they can see what I have and change the preferences to what they see of marketing.

  Almost as important as that - if I had to rely on the cloud whenever I wanted to update my playlists on my phone, I need a better internet connection I have now (working at sea).  To get the best out of the cloud, you need a solid link to home, work or mobile.

  As a spin-off - I hate the fact that Apple take away a feature in their software updates and then allow an app to be sold in their store to replace this feature - or worse still, some features that were available before the updates are now "cloud only."  And Yes - you have to pay for the cloud.  I like most of the people do not appreciate the 'accomplished fact. "

  From the back of the external hard drive ASI downside, is that to be safe, you need to store outside in a separate computer place.  If keep you them together, if one is lost, probably, they are both.  That is to say for me a full backup before you travel, then a new upward as soon as I go home.  Downside is how much data may be lost between the two back ups if I needed to restore.  For me, its worth the risk.  If I was away and say had bought a ton of new music and couldn't go home anytime soon, I can always head to the store and buy a new external drive, they are massively expensive.  Even if my computer has to go for repair and my remote is to halfway around the world - I want to buy a new one.

  Now, some will say that once you buy a new external, you spend more than you would on a cloud subscription.  It's true, but in the 6 years following the purchase of Mac that I've only had to buy a new external once - so with a little luck and planning - it works.

  I left took well - I am not a subscriber of cloud, nor do I want to be.

• Share a lightroom catalog - Does the catalog and images on external hard drive work?

  I manage a small part of the flow of images overall of the client by updating their prescence web basis with new works and relabelling/download earlier works. I believe that this requires the catalogue and the library of images that will be hosted on an external hard drive that can travel between us two. We work both on PC with LR 5.3.

  The workflow should look like this:

  Customer uploads new images on external hard drive and import LR

  'ClientCatalog' is created

  Flags of pickaxes and creates a Collection of those Picks

  Hard disk is handed to me when I opened "ClientCatalog".

  Make changes suggested in pictures

  Add detailed tags and metadata

  Download on various media sites, social and Web sites

  return the drive to the customer

  Is there a potential problem with this workflow? My assumption is that if everything is housed on the external hard drive, so there is no worries for the catalog with all updates. Can someone find out about potential problems, that I might have forgotten? Are there of "security protocols" you would add in to this workflow (not to mention that everythign on another hard disk mirroring) which would you suggest?

  After having done this, the re-start of Lightroom and open the catalog, images will be at the first go in offline mode (previously used location not found). To get online, it will be necessary to re - browse the folder parent for all your image files, to reflect its new location under the new reference in car. That done, the location information of catalog for all images and subfolders located under this parent folder, automatically updated. If that parent does not appear in the list of records of LR, you right-click and choose "show Parent". Display LR then reorganizes to reflect this real hierarchy.

• 1 TB external hard drive works on XP but not Windows 7

  1 TB Toshiba external hard drive.

  It works on my laptop that runs Windows XP bot not on the laptop that is running Windows 7, if the hard disk works. It also works on Vista.

  My Seagate (320 GB) hard drive works on the Windows 7 laptop - so the USB ports are not defective.

  When I plug the hard 1 TB drive that it appears not on the Manager list of devices, or the title of the disk management, still green light from the disk hard flashes and lights up like it normally does when plugged into the laptop XP.

  I have read all the forums and tried the following: edited the Registery values for mass storage devices USB (deleted and lower filters);  Edited the "Usbstor" INF file as suggested check, the Toshiba site for any compatibility issues, and they have suggested that it is a problem of windows 7, given that the player works on other platforms.

  Because the disc is not visible in device etc Manager I can't try the other options.

  Any input would be appreciated

  I found the problem to be with the controller Toshiba uses on their external hard drives.

  I removed the hard drive Toshiba of the carcass, put it in an envelope of SeaGate (thus using a SeaGate controller) and it worked fine.

  To my knowledge there is no software around HD Ext Toshiba and W7 work. Take the HD out of the envelope, buy a cheap eSATA to USB connector & problem solved.

• External hard drive working half arsed

  I have a 2 month old Fantom 2 to external hard drive that I use to store my DVD on since my Carousel begins to fritz.  My new TV does not need to reproduce video files so I can just connect the HD to it and run them from there.  Somehow one of my DVDs got screwed up and half of the titles are in Japanese instead of English so I unplugged and put onr the Win XP computer and ripped the files as straight MP4s.  Unfortunately, I named the files wrong while the second disc was playing before the first.  When I went to hang the HD to the computer it's show is more like a hard drive.  My computer it shows as a removable disk and keys USB and cd player.  Safely remove and Device Manager list it by his old letter of player but it doen't show at all in disk management.  By clicking on the removable drive just hangs up workstation instead to open the drive.  Any ideas on how I can get the drive back to its original state?  Oh yes, the deytects of the TV when you first plug then flashes a message that he cnnot find the drive and it does not list it on the entry screen.

  I have an external hard drive, 2 TB WD My Passport and I have a lot of things out there that I have collected over the past 2 years. When I had OS X Yosemite, I took everything out of it and reformatted it so I could more than just read the documents there and it worked perfectly. Once I upgraded to El Capitan head drive no longer works with my mac and I don't know anyone else with a mac to try to recover the files. When I plug the hard drive, it says "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer." and then it gives me three options: initialize..., ignore and eject. I don't know what to do, I'd be more than happy to reformat, but I have to delete it before doing this and I really don't want to lose all my documents. Is there a solution to this problem other than to lose all my documents and reformat the hard drive?

  Click on ignore and try to repair it with disk utility.

  However, the player may be dead and you will need a type of service or file recovery software to recover the data.

  My photo library was therefore mainly on iCloud due to its size, but I wanted have also stored it locally. So I bought a large external hard drive, plugged and copied my library of Photos of her. I can't find the source of these files. My iMac utility disk tells me I have files over 121 million, while that the Finder tells me that I have only ~ 1 800 elements.

  Should I just make the trip to the Genius Bar, or this should be resolved once the download is complete? Late 2009 iMac, 500 GB; 1.3 photos.

  The best way to save your Mac's Time Machine. It can save the Mac gradually and keeps a history of backups, so that you can go to different moments in time when you restore your Mac.  Time Machine can also include external drives to the backup, see this link: the basics of the Mac: Time Machine

  If you want to save your Media Player separately use cloning software for updating a copy cloned, for example carbon copy clone.

  Before troubleshooting, I have little information on the issue.

  1. Do you receive any error or display message?
  2. Did you recent hardware or modifications to the software on the computer before this problem?

  Try the methods and then check after each method:

  Method 1: Transfer files from a drive to the location on the desktop or a temporary folder and then try to transfer them to the destination disk.

  Note: make sure the free space on the disk in the destination drive.

  Recently, I brought a WRT610 and an external WD MY BOOK. I want that it act as a NAS and access via network.

  Everything go well wth the installation program. I can see my shared in my mac storage.

  I can browser the reader share and create directory or save a 'new' file on this subject. But, I cannot copy/modify and files.

  This problem seems due to mac os will create some hidden when file copy / access of the file on the shared disk.

  Finally, I got it to work.

  Here's my step.

  1 format the external hard drive with mac with big format.

  2. connect the HD to the router.

  3. in the context of storage > Administration, create a group named 'root' with r/w permission and a user 'root' with the root group ".» Save the configuration.

  4. Finally, create a share on the drive. Assign the 'root' group.

  Boom! Its work today. I can use it with time machine and share my itune library.

  Hope this can help someone stuck with this problem.
