  • cannot update or uninstall iTunes because "iTunes.msi" not found - HELP Please

    November 8, 2011 - on window XP

"iTunes.msi" - not found - and therefore prevents the update AND uninstall iTunes!

iTunes.msi is setup.  Normally, it is missing because you didn't upload.

However, in the rest of the error message you forgot, the problem probably turns out to be that you have downloaded a new version of iTunes and it will not be installed because it's hard to uninstall the previous version.

It's always a good idea to post the full error message without paraphrase.  It also helps others help if you describe the circumstances surrounding the error.

Assuming that my crystal ball reveals precisely your problem, the solution is the following:

This message occurs when the registry key pointing to iTunes uninstaller is corrupted (or uninstall of iTunes has been moved or deleted).  The simplest thing to do is just clean things, and then try again.

Used to have a tool just to do this, called the Windows Installer Microsoft Cleanup utility.  Apparently, however, when this tool has been used (I think with MS Office), removes sometimes more he was supposed to, and that's why Microsoft has removed the tool of its download servers.

The Windows Installer Cleanup utility is always available from http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html , or you can use the free Revo Uninstaller.  Before using or the other of these tools, create a restore point from the system, backup the registry with C:\WINDOWS\ERUNT, or (if you can afford) creates a full disk image or a clone - just in case.

Here are the usual directions to perform a "clean installation" of iTunes, based on Support of Apple HT1926 article.

Go to control panel > Add/Remove programs
    Remove these applications:
    1 Apple Software Update
    2. Apple Mobile Device Support
    3 Hello
4 iPod for Windows (this may or may not exist, be it, it is not necessary, then we can remove it)
    5 iTunes
    6 QuickTime

Open my computer > C: > Program Files
    Delete this files (if present)
    1 iPod
    2 iTunes
    3 QuickTime

    Empty your temp directory:
Open my computer > C: > Documents & Settings > username > Local Settings and delete the contents of the folder called "Temp".

If you don't see the local settings, enable hidden files:
Tools > Folder Options > view tab
Select Show Hidden Files & folder, and then click OK

Once this file is empty, restart the computer

[See note above regarding cleanup utility]
Download & install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Launch the utility: start > programs > Windows Installer Clean Up
Select one of the applications mentioned above and click on remove

    Restart the computer
Download & reinstall iTunes from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

  • A network error occurred trying to read the file c: WINDOWS\Installer\iTunes.msi

I'm not able to go to iTunes or watch videos on my program Corel due to an error in Quick Time. It keeps telling me that I need to improve my Quick time and when I tried it wouldn't let me so I tried to remove it and couldn't because of an error and then I came here to get the Windows Cleanup utility and who eventually removed the program out of my control panel and I thought that would fix it but it didn't and now it gives me this message. What should I do now?

    Ok!
This problem occurs in all applications in all environments such as Windows XP, Amiga and Windows 7. I have only my current computer with Windows 7 64 bit related to the problem. After following suggestions to cure the problem without success, I read the error message that displayed the MSI being read in C:\Windows\Installer. There is no such MSI placed in this directory. SO to solve the problem, you must put some Apple msi installation which gives the error message in the C:\Windows\Installer directory. Just drag it directly into the directory. Do not use any subdirectory. If your don't have a copy of the MSI, you can extract it from the EXE installer with a program like WinRar. My problem was with iTunes to bleed the system looked like this C:\Windows\Installer\iTunes64.msi. Run the MSI file or the original from Apple download. It worked for me as expected if you give it a try.

  • Windows xp pro, cannot remove / install itunes, tells me can not find itunes.msi

It is lookimg for a path that does not exist.

Sometimes, a problem of uninstalling can be set by the re - download the application setup and uninstall then reinstall.

If you encounter a problem, try to install a new version of iTunes and the installation will not go ahead because it is impossible to uninstall the previous version, use The Windows Installer Cleanup utility or free Revo Uninstaller to remove the remnants of the old version.

What about the Windows Installer Cleanup utility, the link above is a non-Microsoft site because Microsoft says:

While the utility Windows Installer Cleanup fixed some installation issues, it sometimes damaged other components installed on the computer. For this reason, the tool has been removed from Microsoft Download Center.

If you have imaging/software disk cloning, you use it to make a backup before using either tools above.  At the very least, make a registry backup with the restoration of the system or (free) C:\WINDOWS\ERUNT.

  • Deleting iTunes problems

I have problems with my iTunes. Initially, I had windows 7 and being upgraded to windows 10.

I hated windows 10 and back to 7. Now my iTunes is upward. I tried to uninstall and reinstall to fix the problem. Whenever I try to uninstall it, I get an error message.

The feature you are trying to use is on a network unavailable resource.

Click OK to try again or enter a different path to the folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below.

    C:/users/MATT ~ 1/AppData/Local/Temp/IXPC...

Obviously windows 10 changed the folder or something that happened when I changed the operating system.

For general advice, see troubleshooting problems with iTunes for Windows updates. Start by missing error MSI.

The steps described in the second case are a guide to remove everything related to iTunes and then rebuild what is often a good starting point, unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and other support documents list to the bottom of the page, in case one of them applies.

The more information box has direct links with the current and recent if you have problems to download, must revert to an older version or want to try the version of iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) as a workaround for problems with installation or operation, or compatibility with third-party software.

Backups of your library and device should be affected by these measures but there are links to backup and recovery advice there.

  • ITunes problems...

I know that it is a long-term problem that I have read on many BB.

    I'm running a Dell 6400 with Vista.

I had an older version of iTunes that I stupidly tried to update when I got an iplod.

Now, nothing works on itunes and I can't update or uninstall. The problem seems to be built around the impossible to locate "iTunes.msi"?

I tried cleaning of registry etc and nothing works. I tried the manual removal, emptying recylcling bin and restart then cleaning - zilch.

I tried Apple's new installation but then get the "iTunes.msi" impossible to locate? message and installtion fails.

    Help!

Click on tools in it, uninstall iTunes and give that a try to remove iTunes.

Post back and tell us how you scored.
