Laptop with XP/Ubuntu Dual Boot (grub 2, not to wubi). How to safely to Windows 7 without losing the dual boot ubuntu?

Hello

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 6400/1505 (1.73 Gz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 750 GB (7200 RPM) HARD drive) with Windows XP and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed in dual boot. I installed Ubuntu in a separate partition, not not using WUBI. Since support for XP runs in the month of April, I have to upgrade to Windows 7. I would like to know if I could pass safely XP to Windows 7 (I understand the parameters and programs cannot be transferred to the upgraded version of Windows and must be done manually) without disturbing my score of Ubutnu and the GRUB that starts when I turn on the computer. What are my options if this is not possible. I know one option is to completely wipe the hard drive and start over. But I just wanted to know if I could save my Ubuntu installation.

PS. forgive me if this has been discussed already, please redirect.

Thank you

Joseph.

To begin with, as you already know, there is no way to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, it will have to do a clean install.  When you install Windows 7 it will rewrite the MBR and dislodge the grub, you need to reinstall GRUB after Windows installation and you need to add the Windows installation for the grub.

    Make a backup of each phone to iTunes or iCloud (do not forget to use your Apple ID or personal computer), then do whatever your carrier wants do you to change numbers if that's your intention, then restore these backups on the device of the "other."

    Looks like you'll have to reinstall windows 98.  There was nothing called windows 1989.  I don't even think, it would be interesting to try to reinstall it, but if you still need this computer, you will need to install readers.

  • I forgot the password of windows 7 (Dell laptop), how can reset password windows 7 without a disc?

    Hello, I need help! I forgot my windows 7 login password, Dell laptop! I have tried to capture all the password I remember, but was unable to, also, I can't find my reset disk, how can I reset or recover my forgotten password of windows?  or unlock it?

    This happens often. If you had a windows reset disk, then it is very easy to reset the admin password. If not, then you should make your own and which allows to reset the password. Take a look at this tutorial, it seems fairly easy to reset the password with a usb reset disk:

    Edit: just did a test on my machine to win 10, works as expected.

  • is it possible to install epson SX235W printer wireless with windows 7 without using the CD?

    I have a HP mini and therefore have no CD rom. There is no instructions on how to set up the printer without using the CD and that is why, I have a request if possible?

    You can go to a computer with a CD/DVD drive and copy the contents of the installation disc for the printer on a USB and then insert the USB to your HP mini and install from it.

    Or

    You can go to the manufacturers website and download the driver on your HP Mini and install from it.

    Hello JRD02,

    Welcome to the HP Forums!

    I understand that you want to know what graphics driver is used, and whether or not you can disable a specific. Go into Control Panel, then Device Manager. Go to your display adapter section and right click on the one you want to disable, and then select "disable."

    In this way, you can disable what you do not want to use, and you know who is running! One stone two birds

  • Laptop with Vista black screen of death (KSOD) at startup. How can I fix it?

    For a few hours I have really searched the internet for this problem.

    To start, my Dell Inspiron 1521 supplied with Windows Vista Home Premium (just thought that might be important, apologies if it isn't.)

    A month ago my Inspiron had a problem where I would sign and everything works fine until the... I login and see that my normal wallpaper is now a blank screen, all my shortcut on my desktop icons are gone except for the good old bin recycling and the flashy chrome, taskbar and ORB blue Windows for the Start button has been completely reduced to a dull old menu like you would see on an earlier version of Windows to start Windows. When it happened first, he attaches magically by restarting it. The last time however, I was almost tempted to reformat my hard drive together to solve this problem, because the magic restart did not work this time. I finally found improvement and finally, he started to work again when I went in the area of network in my Start Menu and makes a sort of scanning that fixed my problems (the reason I did it was because I received a pop up when I logged indicating that the disk is not found or that the network was having problems (is not found etc, so I thought that the network in my Start Menu was where I should have started.)

    It was a month ago, it is not my problem now, but I thought that let you on that because I have the feeling that two problems is perhaps related, I felt that it would be unwise to leave something like that out.

    Now, just yesterday I closed my game (Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, high chart!) because he was turning slowly. Once I rebooted, the PC shows the Dell logo and then the Windows screen with the loading bar green scroll. After that, my PC was just a black screen with only my small cursor to entertain me while I waited for over 45 minutes so he can do something. Nothing happened, and it happened yesterday, I was still not able to reach my login screen.

    I have internet but I'm terrible with computers and the only progress I've done, it is that I learned that a lot of PC with Vista have this problem and it's called the KSOD (BlacK S Of Death creen). That's all

    So what I really wonder is... Can someone please explain to me how to solve this problem or what I should do... and there, explain it as if you were talking to a 6 year old? :)

    Try and do a system restore before your problem:

    Restore point:

    Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

    Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

    Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Looks like you have had problems for some time, which makes it harder to diagnose.
    If you can't fix it, you could do a system recovery.
    But back UP all your data before trying that.
    Here's how Dell it:
    Dell recovery options:
    http://supportapj.Dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/DSN/en/document?journalid=67E9C215C4BABD6CE040AE0AB5E14F05&docid=339949
    It's way to Dell to reinstall from the DVD on your computer.
    Answer the questions in blue; It is in a sequence.
    And that way if you have a recovery partition on your hard drive.
    See you soon.
  • Omen of HP 15: How to clean Hp Omen fans without disassembling the laptop?
    The fans in my hp 15 omen have many dist burial. Im not sure if I should clean the fans with compressed air or by sucking the dust outside. I don't want to take it apart, because I can't do it without messing up the laptop. The fans are directly under the laptop. I have not cleaned since I was first, who a year ago. Any suggestions?
    oelsayed
    What I use to clean my laptop is boxes of compressed air that you get in office supply stores.
    With the fans running, spray the air on the blades - but a few inches apart.  In addition, if there are vents in the case, spray the air into those, as well.
    Good luck
I have is the original that came with my pc... XP, no disc + how to deal with this fake windows 7 now on my pc... no money & hoping to salvage something of this mess.its a fine mess now im in ollie.
    Hi jesse,.
    What is the brand and model of your computer? You have the restore disc that came with the computer. If the recovery partition is still intact, you may be able to reset it to factory settings, but I can't tell you how much, until you post the manufacturer and model of your computer.
  • How install to reinstall Windows Vista without a disk on Ubuntu Linux (although I have a valid product key)?
    I have an Acer Aspire 3100 computer laptop comes with Windows Vista, I am not on the number of bits, sure that the processor in this system supports 64-bit operating systems. I was curious to know if there was a way for me to download Windows Vista from Microsoft online and burn it to a CD or a DVD if I have a valid product key supplied with the system. Is it possible to do this? Thank you.
    You can not download Vista.
    In this case, you may be able to buy Acer recovery disks, if you have not created some when you first the computer.
    If you can borrow a Vista DVD (a copy retail, not supplied by manufacturer), you can reinstall since using your product key.
  • boot Windows 8.1 repair without losing the 3 third party programs?
    Hello
    I have improved my win7 in win8.1 pro version specifications n. my laptop responds to the requirements of the win8.1, but every time I encounter an error or restart windows forcely. Another day that it happened because it has overheated, it will ask me to fix it. If I refresh or reset, I lose big programs such as Visual Studio, SQL server etc. these programs are huge and it is very heavy to reinstall them. I had a few reboots forcely on win7 and I was getting similar appearing but I was able to ignore it by selecting "continue loading windows" (or similar). Why is not the same option? It really sucks to reset and lose all programs 3rd party do refresh or reset.
    Help, please! What is the best way to fix it.
    Thank you
    I'm sorry to know that you have questions on your netbook. Let me try and help you with the problem.
    Yes, if you use the update or reset the Windows 8.1, applications you have installed Web sites and DVD will be deleted.
  • Laptop HP pavellion g6 cleaning fan without losing the warranty.
    Hey
    My laptop HP pavellion g6 2320tx seems pretty dirty now. Heating has increased compared to its previous state more recent. What I want is to get their mouths and cleaned the Interior cooling fan. I can disassemble the laptop and do what is necessary, but I'm afraid to lose the warranty on my product.
    Is it possible for the customer to disassemble the product by himself well under warranty coverance? If something does not guarantee will be always good and the service will be free as long as it is supposed to be?
    Thanks in advance
    Hello:
    Unless the laptop has some blocking really bad, you can use the method that I use and pretty much clean the fan/radiator completely area.
    1. remove the power a/c and the main battery of the laptop.
    2 get a straight pin or something thin enough to pose by the fan of the air intake, then place the object between two of the fan blades to avoid that the fan is running.
    3 spray a can of compressed air into the fan intake a few times and look at the blow of dust on the fan to exhaust air.
    Spray the air in vent fan too and look for dust coming out of the fan intake.
    Do this several times until you can't see dust coming out anyway.
    I've never taken a notebook apart to clean the fan/radiator area and my notebooks all work efficiently and the fans rarely turn upward.
