Thanks a lot for your answer. I followed the actions in the link provided, but the problem persisted. To fix it I had to remove the .NET Framework and then reinstall it by using the following procedure. That solved my problem.Thank you very much for your help.
Step 1: Remove the .NET Framework using the removal tool

1. download the tool from the following link:

2. save the zip (dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip) file from the link above on the local desktop and extract it.

In the "cleaning product:", please select ".NET Framework - all versions.
5. click on 'clearing '.
6. restart the computer.
Note: Once we have removed the .NET Framework, some applications that have need of .NET Framework runtime database could lose their functions. It's just a temporary problem. The function will return to normal after the reinstallation of .NET Framework.
After completing these steps, please go to the following suggestions to reinstall .NET Framework 1.1 and its updates.

Yes I have FIOS Media Manager installed, but I've done since the start of Windows 7. For the first week or so it does not start on my download restarts. It started with this Nov 3 update from Microsoft. I went to downloads and there were two of them; Update for Internet Explorer 8 for x 64 based and updated Windows Defender definition.
After you install these two updates on restart FIOS M.M. was live at startup and my favorite MSN have disappeared. I disabled FIOS M.M., but somehow, he has been activated with this download. I went on my drive external backup and recovered the Favorites but am always intrigued by this phenomenon and how it changed my registry.

Chances are, AVG is you slow down because it downloads the latest anti-virus definition files and will then scan your computer. You can set how often you want these updates. Personally I have mine to search every day and will take the hit on his speed to get the latest definition files. Depending on how your system is configured, it will also look at the updates for other programs / Windows as well and download.
