  I tried to find a solution online, but the Microsoft Fix - it tool does not work on my operating system.  I also tried that fix environmental variable of all WAY and also has not worked
  .  I can't believe that there is no solution to this problem available and I can't imagine why Microsoft made a patch available for only PART of its operating system.

I can probably use the external drive without the software, but for those who want to manually move the files to back up, and on the other hand, it beats paying more money for a better player with preloaded software, if you do not use the software.  And because it came with the software loaded on it, going back to the retail store is not an option.
