Library of photos on a NAS file server?

Hi guys,.

We are about to move to OS 10.11 and therefore immune from iPhoto in Photos.

A NAS file server currently holds all of our image files; on our different Macs iPhoto libraries have albums and lists that refer to these images, but the original files are only on the server. We have more than 300 GB of images. iCloud is therefore out of the question for the storage of files.

We want to continue to keep our files image centralized on the file server, accessed by our different Macs. Is this possible with pictures? We are confused by the fact that almost all the discussions of Photos mentions iCloud at one time or another. ICloud is mandatory for the Photos and if so why?

Thanks in advance

John / Bauatelier

iCloud is not mandatory.  It is an option to synchronize photos between several devices that are connected to the same iCloud account.

Although technically Photos can function as a reference library with some source files on a NAS server is not a stable configuration.  It is not nearly as robust that Aperture was referencing Server source files.  Most of the users end up with a library damaged at some point.

If you want a reliable library then consolidate your library of Photos into a managed library and put it on your boot drive or on an external HD which is being shaped as shown in this screenshot and directly connected to the Mac by USB cable, Firewire, or Thunderbolt.

If you want to use the iCloud photo library to sync with all your devices, you will need to purchase enough storage iCloud to house the library and should read these Apple before committing to the iCPL:

That's right - the library needs (for iCLoud, use of the library and for the safe operation) to be on a local wired connection - may not be on a network connection

1 - iCloud is not a backup - you need a local backup

2 - photo library can be on a drive as Mac OS extended (journaled) is connected via a fast wired connection FireWire, Thunderbolt or USB, and which is not used as a unit of backup Time Machine - so far, I have not seen a NAS that responds to this

  • How can I get Windows 7 to recognize my NAS drive as a file server?

I just bought a new desktop computer with Windows 7 (the first time I used it at home).  I have three drives NAS; one of them is an of Maxtor Central axis.  I use the Central axis as a file server, it has Word, Excel and other Office files in addition to my music library and a handful of videos.  Whenever I try to open a document, say Word, Windows 7 does not show the Maxtor under my network.  It shows one of the other drives NAS (Iomega).  When I right click on the network, click "Open in a new window", I see the Maxtor drive. However when I click on it, Windows will open Windows Media Player.  I see only three songs, which aren't even mine; I think they were samples placed on the disk by an application.

Other machines on my network (a computer laptop PC and Mac) continue to be able to see the of Maxtor Central axis.

I can open my documents giving the fully qualified network path "\\Mca-054e16\Public", but it's a pain.  I can't map a drive letter for the drive; I just get the small circle who constantly.

How can I get Windows 7 see Maxtor Central Axis like a file server and not only a media server?

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone may be able to provide,

    Hello

    ·        How do you set up the network?

    ·        Have you used a Maxtor software?

The Seagate knowledge base indicates that his NASwas released before the release of Windows 7. Therefore, it has not been tested in this environment and is not supported by Technical Support. http://Seagate.custkb.com/Seagate/CRM/selfservice/search.jsp?docid=211931&NewLang=en&HiLite=Maxtor+central+axis+Windows7#note

  • Open and access files from within a library of Photos?

I have a backup from a library of Photos from my Mac before it crashed. I want to go through it and remove the pictures and videos of her without merging with my existing photo library. I intend to do by clicking right on it and choose to view the contents of the package and just I hope get a preview of the photos/videos and delete the ones I don't want and copy ones I want on another drive. I want to just make sure that doing it this way no problem or corrupt the file, etc.

    Thank you.

This isn't a good idea. Rather than to do this, why not hold the option key while launching Photos (that is, when you click on the Photos icon in the Dock or in the Launchpad). Which will allow you to select which libraries of pictures you want to work with.

Where the photos are normally stored on a Mac computer? In the folder images in the Finder on my Mac, I have a file named "Library.photoslibrary Photos" i.e. 28.52 gb and another folder called 'iPhoto Library.migratedphotolibrary' i.e. 4.95 GB, but then I have also on the 160 other photo and video files in the same folder. But in my Photos app, it says that I have 6 260 'elements '.

The pictures that you have imported into the photo library are, by default, stored inside the package (not file) "Library.photoslibrary Photos" in your pictures folder. The 'iPhoto Library.migratedphotolibrary' package would contain photos that have been stored in your library, iPhoto at the time of the migration.

The other files in the pictures folder are that: other files. Also, they can be in libraries if you imported and has not deleted the copies lying around in the images.

  • ESXi5 + iSCSI NAS with MPIO, fairly reliable for file server?

I look at the different options to learn where to run a file server. The most logical choice would be to run a Windows Server 2008R2 in an ESX host using the esx storage, however the esx use accesed by iSCSI NAS storage. I'm worried about losing files due to corruption of either the VMFS or VM-file, this could happen with any type of storage, but the fact that the system of whole files be stored in a single VMdisk care.

I have a few other options, such as:

    (1) host the files directly on the NAS Server (it is supported)

    (2) set up a number of logic of the NAS unit directly in the comments of Windows Server (avoiding the use of a VM disk)

The approach let ESXi dealing with iSCSI would be more integrated, but I will be more at risk? If something happens to the VMdisk I would lose all the files it contains, it is probably something (power loss, iscsi network failure?), are there any tools to recover a corrupted vmdisk?

    Thank you

You'll be fine using an iSCSI LUN in ESX.  Your NAS device should be the biggest concern (if you lose the storage, you would lose any protocol any way).  Just make sure that it is a business device.  You could also potentially use NFS from your NAS device (if supported).  As with any environment, make sure that you back up!  You will not be at risk using iSCSI as an RDM.

  • File under ESXi versus NAS appliance server

We have a Netapp file server that is used for sharing files using SMB 2.0

I want to virtualize file services, since I have all the other virtualized servers

I came across two solutions for this under ESXi 5.1

    • Use the Windows Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012 file services role
    • Use Enterprise Martin http://www.Sanbolic.com/web_serving.htm . This option seems to bring some nice features on the single use of Windows Server

I did that three actions files with a be 2 TB, the other two are much smaller. If I virtualize file server, that I need to use virtual RDM or iSCSI initiator of Microsoft to present a volume of more than 2 TB.

Any thoughts on virtualization of files under ESXi 5.1 services?

With Windows 2008 R2, it can be done with Failover Clustering, and there are some things to know I suggest checking the document "Setup for Microsoft Cluster Service and Failover Clustering."

I know Martin Enterprise, so I can't speak to that one.

  • Lightroom loses NAS file locations after external editing in photoshop

When I use Lightroom and use the command to edit my RAW files in Photoshop and then save and close Photoshop and Lightroom loses my file locations.

Indeed, in my test, the original RAW file that I edited was on my NAS server in ' / Volumes/home/something thing-private/Photos/original/_DSH4794.» NAVE. Published Photoshop saved successfully the new file in the same folder that "/ Volumes/home/something-private/Photos/original/_DSH4794-Edit-2.tif" but Lightroom was get her in "/ home/something-private/Photos/original/_DSH4794-Edit-2.tif".

It seems that Lightroom is ripped off the beginning of the game "/ Volumes" file path and I have to say Lightroom where the file is really so he could rebuild the link. No idea how to solve this problem?

I work with the following configuration:

    -Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

-Home-made NAS (freenas) server to store all my RAW files

    -Lightroom version: CC 2015.2.1

    -Adobe Photoshop Version: 2015.0.1

08-12-2015, it's always the same problem with Lightroom version: CC 2015.3 and Adobe Photoshop Version: 2015.1 unfortunately!

I did more stable after reading a message on another forum (LR loses the locations of files after that I have Edit in photoshop on my iMac - Lightroom Forums) and found out that the problem was caused by the AFP share name: home. It seems Lightroom or Photoshop don't like stocks AFP named 'home' when it comes to performing a "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2015...". I renamed my AFP share in 'nashome', and it's working now.

The cause has been found and there is an easy solution, but the problem is still to be fixed by Adobe now!

  • How Merge iPhoto, Aperture, library of Photos (and avoid duplication)?

Hello, I had several iPhoto and opening libraries which were badly named and who had no doubt duplicates. I have now opened and Photos created new libraries. Then the Photos seems to have renamed some of the libraries, I think that each of my old iPhoto/Aperture libraries has a corresponding photo library (except one).

I would switch to a lightroom finder-hosted workflow and I want to get all my photos in a big file (or a folder with subfolders dated), with all duplicates marked for deletion. Ideally, I'll end with a master and a modified version of the final files, but if it's too hard, I'm OK with a few masters.

Is it possible to automate this process?

Attached a screenshot of the mess...

I would like to use Power Photos to merge libraries of Photos into a library. Pictures lacks tools to merge libraries.

Photos of power can move photos between libraries of Photos, as well as find duplicates.

  • Relink 'Library of Photos' to iCloud photo library

This question relates to a clean install of Mac OS Sierra

I have my library of Photos in pictures file, and there all my uploaded images. When I format my computer, how can I create a link to this file with iCloud photo library, so I don't have to download anything new?

I still did not understand the exact procedure for this and want to avoid download it all again as I have in the past. There must be a way to link to the top, since I downloaded them all already.

    You can not

If you restore a library or repair one that it triggers a total upload to make sure that everything is in harmony, there is no way to avoid that - you just start a new library and let ICPL fill the iCloud - he loses people and all

  • How to copy an iPhoto Library AND photos

With the help of iPhoto Library Manager I made a copy of my iPhoto library to a new external drive, but I noticed that when I opened the library copied, the photos it contains are always referenced to the original photos, no copies on the new drive, as I had hoped.

If as expected, how a copy an iPhoto Library AND photos referenced to a new location, on an external drive, as is any independent on the new drive?

    Thank you

    Geoff

    Simple:

Go to your pictures folder and find the iPhoto library here. Drag it to the external hard drive. It will make an exact copy it

    Fact.

Warnings: the player must be directly connected (USB, lightning etc.) and Mac OS extended (journaled) format

Are you running a Managed or referenced library?

A managed, library is the default setting, and iPhoto copies the files in the iPhoto library during import. The files are then stored in the library package

A referenced library is where iPhoto does NOT copy the files in the iPhoto Library when importing because you have made a change to iPhoto-> preferences-> advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files in the library to import) The files are then stored wherever you put them and not in the library package. In this scenario, you are responsible for the management of files.

If you have a library that is referenced, then it is much more complicated.

  • Duplication of my library of photos from my wife (once, not persistent) phone

My wife and I have separate MacBooks and iPhones, with the iCloud separate accounts (and want like that). I know there is no current way to actually "share" our libraries of Photos in a transparent way (grrr), so what I plan to do is to migrate a duplicate of my existing photo library (who currently with all of its photos and mine) on his machine, and then we'll take everything not turn import our photos via USB for some and other computers 'share' to proceed.

My question is: if I make a copy of the file "Library.photoslibrary Photos" on my MacBook and place it in the folder ~/Pictures on my wife's cell phone, will be his machine to use it properly and start using it as the basis for his own (separate) iCloud photo library? I use iCloud photo sharing with my library of photos (with my iCloud account), but my machine is set to 'Download the originals of this Mac' so I don't think I would transfer all files of complete sizes. I realize, this is a snapshot in time, and once the two libraries are set up on their own accounts of iCloud photo library, they will be Islands separated by itself.

I know in the past I could just copy to his machine and go, but wasn't sure if the Photos Library.photoslibrary files now somehow contains the link to my account iCloud or something and would not properly be 'work' when adding to his machine. My hope is that when I first copy the file Library.photoslibrary of Photos to his machine, it will only have a local copy of the photos and then when I turn on iCloud photo library on your computer, the photos will begin downloading to her iCloud.

    This will work as expected?

Yes it will work as expected with this comments

You must set the library you transfer only the system library in his Photos preferencs

and it will not replace iCloud pHoto Library - it will merge in it (elimination of duplicates in the process)
